What's left for #5800 New Flyer's

Yesterday we were out on a drill on Eng co.107. We passed by 14th/Wolcott where we spotted some CFD equipment shooting water. Along with the CFD rigs there was a plain, all white ex 5800 New Flyer bus. We didnt get close enough to take a look, has anyone else seen this bus?

You're correct. I spotted 5837 doing an NP Lakeshore route (think it was #143 or #135, not too sure though) just yesterday.

Though it couldn't be 143 since that's now a Kedzie route. :) Maybe you meant 144 perhaps. Either way the 5800s are holding out longer than thought by those who speculated they'd be gone before the 4400s and 5300s which both are now gone and at one point weren't getting shredded quite as fast as the 5800s.

You're correct. I spotted 5837 doing an NP Lakeshore route (think it was #143 or #135, not too sure though) just yesterday.

I saw 5837 heading north on Michigan while I was waiting waiting for a #151 at Michigan and Ohio.

I hope this isn't so because I love the sound of the Diesel Series 50 with the ZF-ECOMAT-HP-590 tranny on these D40LFs. It sounds much better than those 1000s with Cummins engines.

As for TMCs I still want to ride the CTA's 4400s before they're gone, but seems time is running out. It also doesn't help that can only come on weekends. :(

lol.do you know that by saying tranny you are refering to a transexual?any way back to topic does any one know of a current roster for 5800s

Well, the 5800's are retired, as per Kevin's update...

This allows me to put up a farewell song for our favorite departed buses without bringing up the 4400 and 5300 topics(I think it speaks for all of these)...

The 4400 TMC RTS Series

The 5300 Flxible Metro Series

and now the 5800 New Flyer D40LF Series(the pilot low floors for the CTA)

Not necessarily so! :) The Chicago Fire Dept has an exCTA 5800 (#5858) assigned to the fire academy now. I was never really a big fan of the 5800s. I do remember when they were brand new, riding them on the #151 Sheridan going to visit my girlfriend, now my wife! They were pleasant to ride during the hot summer days. But one of the things I didnt like of the 5800s was the a/c unit on top, I dont like seeing a/c units on top of buses.

Oh I don't know I found them reminscent of 4041 and 4290 (speaking of MAN's of course since numbers 4000-4149 are now recycled fleet numbers).

Actually, it is quite so. Last two 5800s -5820 & 5837 from North Park - were retired last week as noted elsewhere. Retired means they are no longer in CTA revenue service. It doesn't mean that they don't exist somewhere for some other use, or even that they have actually made it to the scrap heap.

How come the only garage they were assigned to was North Park Garage ?

If you see an exCTA 5800 NF on the street then they arent totally gone.

Just like the #3300's if you see #131 ex #3398. Which reminds me, there's a picture floating around on Flickr that shows a #3300 interior with brown vinyl seating, just like the #6000's or #5 - #50 "L" cars (or maybe a shade lighter) after they were rehabbed in the mid 80's. Did some of these end up with brown seats or did they have them the whole time?

Because the 5800s were an experimental order of low floor buses to see how these types of buses fit in overall CTA service before they made the decision to order low floors in the future. Of course after that the subsequent orders were low floors. The next orders of low floors after that were the 6400s received 2000-2002, the 7500s received 2003-2005, 1000s received starting in 2005 (included in this order were the 800s and 900s both received in 2005), and the 4000s received starting late last year.
