qwantae
Sunday Evening around 10pm, I was coming from my house on 67th/ Dorchester. I was driving down to 71st st, then go west on 71st towards Cottage Grove. I was approaching a #1306 at Woodlawn after going underpass the Electric Metra/ South Shore Tracks. It was blocking the westbound lane, the suspect was holding the rear door of the bus at Woodlawn. When the suspect let go of the door and the bus took off, the suspect had ran towards the left side of a moving bus towards west while shooting at the bus, but I had turn right on Kimbark because I didn't want to get shot and I saw a young lady with a toddler, I asked her that she need a ride, so she hurried and got in, dropped her off one block north at 69th. Then I went back around on Dorchester to 67th to King Dr south to 71st east to ended up at the scene at 71st/ Cottage Grove, the bus #1306 (Route 71) was at westbound bus stop on northeast corner. It ended up with 2 unknown passengers got shot, blood all over the near front seats on the right side. Dont know yet more infomation on the passengers, it maybe show on the news, but I give 5 officers my imformation and a description of the guy who shot at the bus, his whole clothing, black little gun he shoted with (I saw him shooting at the bus like 3 times). I'm so glad that I was so safe and almost got shot, because he looked at me for couple seconds while I was trying to pass the bus, I didn't even see anyone else got off the bus. I will be moving out of my neighborhood (Grand Crossing) sooner this month. And I pretty sure that the victims (Passengers) will get a good description of the suspect too. Did anyone seen this on the news yet?
Kevin
There's currently a small blurb on the Tribune Blog. I'm guessing there will be further coverage tomorrow morning. Good to know you're safe and were able to assist in providing a description of the shooter.

Did anyone seen this on the news yet? That sounds scary. I hope everyone's okay now and i'm certainly glad you're okay and that you told the police the information. Believe this or not, but 1059 on #70 Division was involved in some kind of shooting yesterday as well, around 4:30pm. The bus was picking up someone at Division and Lockwood when two guys started shooting at the bus. One guy had a paintball gun while the other person had a BB gun. If you guys want to know where I got this from, I was listening to my police district (25th district - Grand/Central. It covers Division and Lockwood also) when the call came out. There seems to be too much of that on the south side (i.e. the WGN story also had that the girl was from Julian, the same as the guy who was killed on the 103 bus). jajuan
I saw mention of the incident with 1306 on the WGN Morning News. A 17 year old girl was shot in the eye and unfortunately was pronounced dead at the hospital. The incident started when the shooter got into a verbal dispute with another guy on the bus. He got off the bus at the location reported (71st and Cottage Grove) and started shooting at the bus. That's when the girl and the other apparent victim were hit. They mentioned that the girl attended Julian HS, the high school of the other teen shot on a CTA on the south side Blair Holt. It's sad that another of this school's students was lost in a similar tragedy involving a CTA bus so soon after the other first tragedy. Hopefully the surveillance video and eyewitness accounts will be helpful like in the Blair Holt case, despite that one Julian father who was shown lamenting that even with the cameras the killers still get away, which was not true in the Holt case and may not be so hopefully in this one. I do understand his frustration and concern for his kids' safety though.

It brings about a feeling that south side residents just can't win. First they had to be concerned with losing a large number of their routes in the doomsday scenario, and now they have to be concerned with if they'll make it through a bus ride alive. This whole shoot first and ask questions later has to stop. There are better ways to resolve your conflicts. This is just down right ridiculous. I feel so bad for the girl's family, especially because the girl was an innocent bystander. Also, I know the paintball/BB gun innocent is different, but it's still an incident that the person who did it needs to be held accountable for. I mean, from what I heard on the radio, half of #1059's windows were broken out. I saw mention of the incident with 1306 on the WGN Morning News. Actually he got off at 71st and Woodlawn, I was behind that bus right there after coming from Dorchester and underpass electric metra tracks and the shooting begun there, He must have been wearing running shoes to run that fast. Ok. Channel 7 and Channel 9 reported the shooting occurring at 71st and Cottage. You're right he must have been running pretty fast to make it to Cottage Grove. jajuan
I saw the video clip from 1306's surveillance video showing an image of the alledged suspect on WGN this morning and apparently his mother recognized him because WGN showed footage of her on its 5:30 news pleading with him to turn himself in. Busjack
I saw the video clip from 1306's surveillance video showing an image of the alledged suspect on WGN this morning and apparently his mother recognized him because WGN showed footage of her on its 5:30 news pleading with him to turn himself in.Saw that after you mentioned it. However, the Trib. wouldn't name the suspect/fugitive/person of interest/expletive deleted. Hope he is not on the street too long. I was surprised that the picture was that good. Normally (especially with regard to bank jobs), there is a shady, gray scale, unfocused photo. Maybe getting this back to the bus angle (note that the author titled this topic "NF 1306", not "I saw person shot on bus", and we can speculate on the reason for that, but) since this bus has the real time communications (in that it was on BusTracker when at 74th), did that help the police response? A final comment: While the cameras were initially installed to help find graffiti "artists" after the fact, it is a shame that they were needed in the Blair Holt and this case (in that those shootings should not have happened). BusHunter
Some news outlets have stated the gunman shot through open doors on the bus. Could this be the same doors quantae speaks of as he approached the bus. This must have been very scary for everyone on the bus. As far as the better clarity of the shots. #1306 has newer cameras on there. If you look at the nova buses surveillance cameras you'll note they are different. They display a black/white picture to police. These newer type cameras display color pictures with less breakup. The technology that will most likely help put this guy away. Given that qwantae titled the topic, New Flyer 1306, 71 71st-South Shore, and his description of what he saw happen, I think it's pretty safe to assume here his intent was to relay the tragic shooting that occurred on the bus. There's not much that can be said of the bus itself until the proper repairs and cleaning are done, and the bus is put back in service. Relaying how the bus's equipment, in particular the vid from its cameras, may be progressing the case is in topic with everything qwantae put in the initial post since he mentioned seeing the shooting and describe the mood of the area just following the shooting. Now to answer your question about police response, I would say it's possible since there were no reports of anyone complaining of slow response time. With the person now indentified, its good that the onboard camera helped solve this terrible crime. I only hope that incidents like this will discourage criminals from commiting crimes on board CTA vehicles in the future.

CircleSeven
That's just plain sad that it happened on Sunday Night. My condolences go to the girls' family for this devastating loss. You can't take back a lost life but at least, he has some remorse to go to a church and turn himself in to the authorities.

As they said (and is undoubtedly the case), there is more video than just the identification frames shown. I commend you for doing your civic duty, and it seems like you will be further involved, including being subpoenaed to court to testify in support of your identification to the police. Given that guy's sweater, it shouldn't be too hard to verify if he is the shooter or not.
Busjack
According to the Sun-Times, the cameras are even more extensive than thought. Also, apparently both riders were packing heat. Maybe more arrests are coming.
