CTA's Bus Shortage

I figured I would make this post in this new thread to keep what bus moves after the NABIs' parking separate from what's going on with the NABIs themselves. I noticed that today as far as Bustracker showed this morning, Kedzie used its own buses (1000s and 6000s) on the express runs and 156 and used a number of the loaners to shore up the local routes outside downtown. I rode 1474 (a former 103rd bus recently transferred to Chicago as indicated by the C sticker) this morning on the 12 Roosevelt to work and spotted 1002(?) on the 12 when I arrived at work. Heading home, I rode 6530 on the 12 Roosevelt for the return trip. NP appeared to be doing the same this morning. 146 and 147 were mostly NP 1000s and 4000s. Didn't spot any FG loans on either during the quick scan of routes I did this morning.

I was on 1760 (103) on the 36 yesterday.

1760 was a 103rd bus had and "03" in the window. Ive seen it several times on the 29 prior. 74th has 1725-1759.

It had to have been a transplant from 74th then because it was originally a 74th bus when 74th first got NFs and before it got 1725-1729 from Kedzie. Speaking of 103rd buses, I saw 4046 headed to do a WB school trip on the 7 Harrison from Manley High School at Polk/Sacramento.

74th got 30 new buses 1730-1759 when they first got NF's, not 31. Any who, it appears some of the 4000's that have been recently transfered back to 103rd from 77th are showing up on the 156 (4018, 4026, and 4040).

Based on the Tracker currently, more former 74th buses are showing up, from 1753 on the #147 to 1754 on #93, to 1755 on #151, to 1758 on the #36.

Actually it was 1731-1760. Kedzie had up to 1730, which is what I meant to type in my other post, at that point. I remember now because I rode 1730 on the 12 Roosevelt along with several other Kedzie routes before it was first to head to 74th among that block of six buses1725-1730. Plus I spotted 1760 on the 9 and X9 a number of times.

So, with the NABI's sidelined, how many buses is CTA short to make full rush-hour service?

With all the transfers from other garages each garage is averaging between 15 -20 short compared to their fleet totals in January. That comes to about roughly 150 short. If your thinking in terms of capacity (Example NP is short about 50 artics compared to what they had. But 30 of them have now become 40 footers.) you can tack on about another 50 buses if your thinking in terms of a 3 to 4 ratio, because they are short 150 - 180 artics total compared to what they had. If the NABI's don't come back and it doesn't look like they will, there is most likely going to be some more ordering of artics in the near future. We'll probably see the base order of 140 ordered in the up to 900 artics bid that NF won.

NP had 80 artics before the NF order started coming in. And now the NF order is up to 52 as of yesterday at NP. So only 30 or so short at this point. Not as bad as it could be. If they would not put artics on the 152 in the afternoon that would also help. The 152 is a 2 min headway at that point and no one is full, and that does not include FG runs.

I'm just getting into CTA buses after finding a link to this site from chicago-l. I've been seeing a few odd buses in Hyde Park, but one really sticks out in my mind. Last Saturday I was waiting for the #55 bus and using bus tracker. A phantom bus, not on the tracker, showed up, and it was immediately apparent that this was a bus they normally did not run. It had the modern paint scheme, but the paint was in terrible shape. I've only lived in Chicago for a year and a half, so I'm not as familiar with the older buses. Is it possible that they were running a work bus in order to fill a gap? Looking at the gallery, I believe it was a MAN Americana bus, since it definitely had a flipdot sign.

I was basing my post on what they had in January. Turns out were both right in a way. Np did have #7651 - #7571 (81 buses minus #7629) before the #4000's arrived. But in January they had #4013 - #4061 odds (25 there) and #7651 - #7633, #7630, #7627 - #7610, #7608 - #7573, #7571, #7570 (75 buses there including what had been put on hold/retired at that point.

Americanas haven't been on the #55 in at least 10 years. It's possible you may have saw a Cummins #6000. (#6329 - #6305) Some of there paints job are really beat up because they were never rehabbed with a fresh paint job as part of it. I don't know what to say about it being a flipdot sign. Were you looking at the sign in front or on the side?

I'm probably mistaken, as I wasn't expecting a bus at that moment and it caught me by surprise. It probably was a #6000, and I'm just misremembering. Additionally, i'm still learning the different types of destination signs. All I remember for sure is that it wasn't a roller curtain, that would definitely have caught my attention.

Probably a 6300-Cummins Series Flxible(6305-6329). I've deemed these "Ghost Buses" as I've seen them occassionally on #9, but the tracker doesn't! These buses will probably be the first to go as far as #6000's go, as these buses look like they've been through a war w/ patches of missing paint here and there. Some of the engines squeal as bad as the 5800's used to(especially shifting from like 2nd to 3rd gears). There may be a few that have the tracker, but if they do, it wasn't installed fully or the equipment broke and the CTA isn't going to bother fixing it.

It's been about 13 years. 55 was designated accessible in 1996. Also Americanas haven't been in revenure service since 2004. I almost was going to say it was possibly a New Flyer 1000 because they look similar to Americanas until I reread your post and saw mention of the condition of the paint. I'll agree with the others said about it possibly being a Cummins Flx (6305-6329).
