Zol87
Yesterday I was going around the south side taking photo's for my Flickr web page. I got off at 95th and walked east towards Chicago State University. At the driveway leading into the campus at 95th/St Lawrence was this old bus sign for the #3 King Drive Limited. According to the sign it had a dashed line from Roosevelt to 79th and said that it made limited stops in this zone. At the end of the route instead of turning right onto 95th and making a right turn on 95th and using a turnaround loop via Michigan, 99th State, 95th; it went east on 95th to St Lawrence and supposedly turned around using the CSU campus drive. Was this a predecessor to the X3 King Drive Express and when was this route in service? Were there other Limited routes like this one? The 3L route started in the 1980s and was renumbered X3 from 8/31/2003. The 3, 3L/X3 & 4 all used to terminate on CSU campus until 6/17/2007 when cta was asked to vacate the campus and buses moved to their present termini. Busjack
Basically, at the time of the South Lake Shore restructuring, they said 3L was redesignated X3 with no change. As 2847 points out, the routes were subsequently evicted from CSU (see also our discussion here). I'm surpirsed that CTA left the sign there where there is no bus. The other limited bus (of that generation) is the 53AL. There were, of course, plenty of them prior to 1973.

jajuan
Another clarification, in the beginning of its service King Drive Limited was designated number 3 just as the King Drive locals. Same situation for the 53AL, the limiteds didn't have the L at the end of the route number to distinguish from locals. In the mid 90s, came the redesignation to 3L and 53AL, though designation signs on a lot of the King Drive Limiteds still showed a route number 3. With the Lake Shore restructurings, as Busjack points out 3L became the X3 with no change in routing. In addition to the route being evicted from CSU along with the 3, 4 and X4, a couple of stops were added in the limited stop zone. One had been added at 14th/Michigan and most recently on was added at Cullerton/Michigan.

Flxible 6211
Does the local 3 King Drive goes past Michigan/Delaware and turns around at Lake Shore/North Avenue ?

busfan2847
There was also a KIng Drive Express in the late 60s/70s when the #3 only went to 93rd King Drive in those days. The earlier King Drive Express was withdrawn on 11/30/75. However, it started back in early CMC days on 3/28/27. When was the 3 extended to CSU? From maps it must have happened by 1976. geneking7320
Has CTA moved the "short" 3 King Drive destination to 25th and Michigan/Mercy Hospital? I saw a northbound #3 around 8:00am today with a sign to that effect. Also, I notice the bus stop signs have been removed from Cottage Grove between 31st Street and 29th Place. Gene King I have never seen a short turn 3 northbound since Michael Reese closed. Every bus I have seen goes downtown to the north and most southbound buses go to 95th. I have seen some short turns durng the PM terminating at 63rd. Ihave only seen 21 Cermak buses at Mercy.
