I have many pics I will upload a lil later too. As I was leaving the scene I asked a supervisor was the female operator ok?, and wats the look of her keeping her job?...both answers were yes...the prob told me that to be telling me that. I just saw the news and the pictures of it. 6228 is toast, the whole front is messed up. Thank goodness everybody is ok. The CTA Bus Operator will be taken for an immediate drug test, and pending the results of both the drug test and what happened, she may either... 1) Continue driving with no discipline(if all tests are negative and her story on what happened checks out) 2) If tests come out negative, but story doesn't check out, she'll be wrote-up, suspended, or possibly terminated 3) If a test or tests come out positive, she'll be immedately terminated most likely. What is with the fate that all these Flxibles (6274, 6084, 6228, etc.) are getting destroyed in accidents? They are only about 26% of the fleet. Thankfully the operator and the four passengers that Channel 7 mentioned on the bus have no life threatening injuries. Yes 6228 is pretty much definitely toast. That whole front end is gone from top to bottom from the shots shown on Channel 7. Though the 6000s are not at the top of my list it's never a good thing for a bus to be taken out by an accident. Preferably they should serve out their service lives until mechanical issues take them out for good regardless of how they rank on any of our personal favorites lists. I was thinking about that. Usually it is the new equipment that gets wrecked. I wonder if this is now conincidence, or if there is a safety problem (i.e. bad brakes) that indicates that they should be taken off the road? (Obviously, that doesn't apply to the one that was rearended by an SUV). It looks as though CTA owes someone a new house. When #6131 rear-ended another Flxible on Rt #84 a couple years ago when the operator had a medical emergency(I'm not sure of the bus number that was rear-ended, BTW: if anyone knows, please enlighten me), I thought it(#6131) would be retired based on how bad the damage was, but suprisingly, it was repaired and returned to service. So, if there are donor 6000's at 77th/Perry or 95th/Ewing, they could strip front end parts off those buses to repair #6228, if they want to take the time to do so. It went back into service as a rehabbed bus 12/2003. #6131 didn't return until 4/2005. The stairs and lift were rebuilt and some #5300's doors were put on the bus. The bus has a new instrument panel that gives it a newer look than the other buses. As far as yesterday's 115th crash, #6228 would've probably been repaired if it was 5 or 6 years ago, but the #6000's are on the way out, maybe as soon as Feb. so it makes no sense to fix it. If it was #1840 or another NF, it would have been repaired unless it had frame damage or something terminal. Considering how many NF's 103rd has versus #6000's they got lucky on that. Today though I heard the building hit was deemed "not structurally sound" and the house was torn down. (beginning last night) So I guess the CTA is on the hook for that. I don't even think those people could get there valubles, so they would also have to be compensated. I guess it's an insurance issue now. Looks like she oversteered the bus. If you look on googlemaps.com and examine the intersection you'll see it's got a steep angle. She probably turned the wheel and for some reason (speed,mechanical defect,operator error) the steering wheel was never returned to the straight position so she oversteered. Of course, there were once news pictures about the MAN artic that demolished a house on Jeffery. Update: Chicago Breaking News indicates that a car jockey collided directly or indirectly with the bus. Apparently a frequent Chicago occurrence. Really questionable is the statement "The bus was able to drive away on its own about 6:30 p.m." Sort of like the statements that an SUV caused an accident.
