Busjack
I was Channel 9 news this evening and talk about that person who stole the bus was a homeless guy and the police let this person go and the manager at 103rd Street got in trouble for not tell the CTA about the bus being stolen and CTA did not tell us the public until 4 days later and he suspended for 2 weeks without paid. Anyway, here's the link. However, I couldn't figure out if you were Suppelsa, Daley, Rodriguez, Shaw, or the guy in the mug shot.B)
Guest
This afternoon at Jefferson Park I ran into one of my CTA co-workers. He showed me the ID cards that CTA employees have to physically display indefinitely after the bus joyrider incident. He also states that missing CTA uniforms now have to reported to the police. Busjack
WLS radio just had a story that it happened again this week. Someone drove a bus from 77th to Kedzie.
Guest
Here we go again!!! Im sure the garages will be stepping up security again by either shutting garage doors or using buses to block exits such as the case at FG. Either way, it wont prevent an incident like this from happening again!

I thought they had said so in 2010, and now they are saying so as of yesterday, but it looks like they are now putting their bets on the Trapeze management system that was just awarded. In that the staff at the Kedzie garage caught this one, whoever said a couple of years ago that anyone could just walk into Kedzie apparently now is wrong. However, apparently anyone can still walk into 77th. Mentioning FG, apparently the "Private Property" sign is also technically wrong, as this guy was charged with trespassing on state land. I caught that last detail too. CTA is a semi private organization but their garages are apparently considered government property from a legal and prosecutorial standpoint. Bravo on the Kedzie personnel having such a good eye. Seeing how tight nit they seemed to be though when I lived on the West side, in a small way it's not surprising. Seeing how tight nit they seemed to be though when I lived on the West side, in a amnall way it's not surprising. There is nothing private about it, since CTA is a municipal corporation. Anyway, I was looking more into it being "state land" but the technical name for the crime is Criminal Trespass to State Supported Land, which sure includes CTA. The statute also includes federally supported land through some state agency, which definitely includes CTA. So, next time Quinn, Durbin, or Bobby Rush stand on CTA property (like they did at 95th) don't trespass there. The "Private Property--No Trespassing" signs are probably sufficient to satisfy: A person has received notice from the State within the meaning of subsection (a) if he has been notified personally, either orally or in writing, or if a printed or written notice forbidding such entry to him or a group of which he is a part, has been conspicuously posted or exhibited at the main entrance to such land or the forbidden part thereof. Also, the defendant might be accused of two counts in that it prohibits trespassing after getting notice and using false ID or representation to get onto state supported land. artthouwill
Though the story didn't say, I wonder if the stolen bus was a Nova, which would be an eye opener at Kedzie, since they don't have any. Maybe it was a New Flyer in the 19xx range which someone would spot as a number not belong there. Perhaps the dead giveaway could've been the electronic run number box with a 7 in the first box? sw4400
I wonder what effect this crap is going to have on people who lose things on a bus and have to reclaim it at said buses' garage... does this mean a employee has to physically meet the person at the gate and escort them to Lost & Found to collect their item(s) and escort them off the property too. As far as the joyrider... -Bus joyrider had on clothing resembling a CTA uniform, including the shirt, pants and vest. This makes me think the joyrider is an ex-CTA employee, knows someone in the CTA and "borrowed" their uniform, or dare I bring it up again... is a CTA Buff who likes the buses crazily enough that he would steal one just to deadhead from 77th to Kedzie with it. This could be a chicagobus.org member who has a amazingly crazy fetish for the buses. I know the last time this happened, this subject was brought up(by rmadisonwi, I believe). Just would get into the "More Bus Moves" thread. Also, the only indication would be the windshield sticker, since the article says the bus was out of service and being serviced. To light up the run box, the person would have had to known how to log into the gps, unless it possibly was a dot matrix one that didn't clear when the bus was turned off. The article says "Steele said Martin is not and never has been a CTA employee, and investigators have not verified reports that he may be related to a CTA driver." As far as going to the lost and found, either the garage has a public entrance to the office or, yes, you have to escorted. For instance, the Forest Glen transportation office is accessible from Armstrong Ave., but there is no reason to be roaming through the two yards to get to the lost and found, even though the south yard gates are open because the yard is part of the regular route for 85. But I suppose security is much more lax at 77th. I haven't been there recently, but when they were selling old roll signs in about 1976, they said just walk through the yard to get to the tool storage building. Railwaymodeler
This sort of thing is always of concern to me. People like this "joyrider" tend to make everything more difficult for the rest of us rail and bus fans. The old saying of a few bad apples spoiling the bunch, certainly applies here, especially with all the security concerns in this day and age. Just means the rest of us, have to work harder at proving that rail and bus fans prevent more problems than we create. After all, if we see something malfunction, like a block signal, at a train station, out of all the passengers there, we may be the only ones to notice it, know it is wrong, and notify someone. Frankly, I hope this joyrider doesn't start telling anyone he is a bus fan!
MVTArider
-Bus joyrider had on clothing resembling a CTA uniform, including the shirt, pants and vest. It's probably possible to create a knock off of just about any type or style of uniform out there, but I wonder if it would help if CTA had more unique looking uniforms. IIRC CTA operator uniforms are basically white/stripe uniform shirt w/ logo on sleeve, dark pants, and dark knit vest with a logo. Maybe having shirts and vests with more prominent CTA logos, and some sort of unique color pattern would make it harder for someone to creae their own "uniform" off the rack. Busjack
It's probably possible to create a knock off of just about any type or style of uniform out there,... I think the problem is the CTA is about 15 years behind the times when it comes to ID. Most companies have required that employees scan in. As the article indicates, maybe CTA will when they get the Trapeze management system.
MRCTA
I can't believe this was happening! Can you? When Will People Ever Learn! Stealing A CTA Bus? Not Cool! Dumb Stuff! Second time this year this happened!

MRCTA
There was also the incident long ago (that andre talked about on rhe chicago transit forum on yahoo) about a drunk man who took a bus out (#397) and hit several parked cars with it. That resulted in the retirement of that bus. So this does happen now and then. What makes people do dumb stuff like that?
Busjack
I hope they catch the guy! Mercy! If you read the article, it said he was being held at the Cook County Jail. So, go back complaining about the umps, Hawk. :D
sw4400
What makes people do dumb stuff like that? Well in the case of the post you quoted from... That resulted in the retirement of that bus. So this does happen now and then. ...everybody's good old friend, alcohol, was to blame. Seriously, why do you have to drink like this? I've never touched a drop of alcohol due to medical reasons, but why would someone want to get so messed up that they can't stand up straight and can't even talk normally?

Busjack
...everybody's good old friend, alcohol, was to blame. The story says he was charged with " two counts of unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a fictitious/altered driver's license, and criminal trespass to state land, according to Chicago Police." Nothing about DUI. If you want to go to possible reasons, there was the teenager charged with impersonating a police officer, and the CTA Tattler had a post on people who like to steal buses. Although people posted up the thread that they hope it wasn't one of chicagobus.org's members, it is undoubtedly a foamer of some type. Note also James Reyes's comment to this post. One could surmise from the suspect's address that he might have just wanted a ride home (although then he should have dropped it off at Chicago garage). And looking at Cheryl's response to that same article, you got at least one driver from some time ago letting a person drive a bus a half mile because she was "young and cute" and he wanted to get her number. i8itall4u
Back in the 90s, a 9800 from Forest Glen was parked facing sb on Princeton, at 63rd. I later found out it had been stolen. It's funny how "foamers" of all stripes do these things. Good thing trains are confined to tracks.
