2600s on Green Line?

Today, while I was riding the Green Line with my Mom at Central Park-Garfield Park Station, I saw a 2600 pull up at our Platform. They were Cars 2667-2669, 2885-2888. I rode the Train to Downtown. I was wondering, "hey, aren't the 2400's on the Green Line?" Does anybody else know about this? Happy New Year to all.

Thanks,

Timmy

Are you sure about those numbers? Both aren't married pairs, and Chicago-l.org doesn't report any other mismatched 2600's yet.

The Green Line normally runs entirely with 2400-series cars. But when extra cars are needed, some 2600-series cars get temporarily transferred to the Green Line from other lines whenever ridership demands more cars.

In this case, the 26xx and 28xx cars are normally assigned to the Red Line.

This past July, several of the Brown Line's and Blue Line's 2600-series cars ran in revenue service on the Green Line: 2993-2994, 3001-3002, 3129-3130, 3169-3170 and 3189-3190. (2993-2994 and 3001-3002 were trainlined together with the 2400's when they ran on the Green Line.)

All this happened because the lower-numbered 2400's (2401-2422) were pressed into work-only service at that time. (12 of the 22 work-equipped 2400's are normally assigned to the Green Line; the other 10, to the Purple Line.)

On the other hand, this could be the beginning of a major equipment-assignment shuffle involving three lines: Some of the Green Line's 2400's may be reassigned to the Brown Line next year, while many of the Brown Line's 3200's may be reassigned to the Red Line - and the Green Line may begin to run mostly with 2600's, with some 2400's supplementing the 2600's on the Green Line during weekday rush hours.

The question being, if the proposal to separate Douglas from the Blue Line is implemented, and Congress has the same frequency as O'Hare, from where will CTA get the needed cars, unless (a) the O'Hare frequency or car length is reduced, or (B) there is a sufficient reserve fleet, now being used for breakdown coverage? Obviously, the AC cars have not been ordered yet, and the first won't be arriving until 2009.

How soon we forget, especially the one on the Green Line in February. Most of the Internet reports are gone by now, but a search of the CTA Tattler offers some accounts.

In fact, in that Green Line fire, the two cars damaged by that fire were 2400-series cars 2469-2470. Both are awaiting the scrapper.

They were Cars 2667-2669, 2885-2888.

On the latest CTA Car Assignment Sheet dated 18 January 2006, neither 2667-2669 nor 2885-2888 were listed as "mismatched". In fact, their mates (2668, 2670, 2886 and 2887) have since been repaired and reunited with their original mates. All are assigned to the Red Line.

In addition, cars 2961-2962 have been reassigned to the Red Line from the Purple Line (the latter has begun to have its fleet reduced). From that Purple Line, 2400-series cars 2599-2600 had been reassigned to the Green Line last year (to replace cars 2469-2470 which burned in the fire at 37th Street in February 2005), and cars 2551-2552 joined the Green Line fleet a couple of months ago.

As for the 3200-series cars, cars 3311-3312 were temporarily assigned to the Red Line, awaiting the arrival of 2961-2962 to that line. (3311-3312 - the "White Sox" cars - were eventually returned to the Brown Line.)

They got 2600's back on the Brown Line? I mean "back" because there was some that were Assigned to that Line I think it was between 1981 (1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986 or 1987)-1991 (or 1992, 1993, or even 1994)

Actually, there are 10 2600-series cars that are currently assigned to the Brown Line: 2993-2994, 2995-2996, 2997-2998, 2999-3000 and 3001-3002. Other than those, the Brown Line uses 3200-series cars.

No, those are Years, I don't know quite what Years 2600's were on the Brown Line

The Brown Line ran primarily with 2600's (with a few of the remaining 1950's-era 6000's mixed in) from about 1985 to 1992. And there is a transition period from 1992 to 1994 when both 2600's and 3200's were used on the Brown Line.

Today, the Brown Line runs with mostly 3200's, with a small handfull of 2600's supplementing the fleet.

The White Sox cars were on the Yellow Line as recently as February 2.

Due to the shuffling, there are currently no 2600's assigned to the Green Line. However, cars 2551-2552, 2599-2600 and 2961-2962 have returned to the Purple Line. Cars 2499-2500, which were assigned to the Purple Line on the most recent Car Assignment Sheet, are now assigned to the Green Line. And of the 2469-2470 pair, 2470 is the only one that's awaiting the scrapper; car 2469 was eventually repaired and re-mated to car 2504 (whose mate 2503 was irreparably damaged in an accident).

There are some 3000's (that went from Brown Line) that got switched to Pink a week before the line debuted. I think its strictly 3001-02, but I knew there had to be more than that.

Actually, only 3001-02 are assigned to the Pink Line. The 2970's through 3000 -- including the 2977-78 unit which caught fire in the Blue Line derailment -- were switched from both the Purple and the Brown Lines to the Blue Line about a week before the Pink Line launch. (To make up for the loss in the Brown Line fleet, all of the former Yellow Line cars -- 3441-50 -- were switched to the Brown Line.) The Yellow Line now runs with leftover cars of either the 2400 or the 2600 series (whichever is not being used that day for either Red Line or Purple Line service.)

According to the June 26, 2006 Car Assignment Sheet just posted at Chicago "L".org, I was a bit off in my initial findings. The Yellow Line now got 3451-56 from the Brown Line and the mismatched 3457-58 from the Purple Line, while the Brown Line got the former Yellow Line units 3441-48; only unit 3449-50 remains assigned to the Yellow Line from the date that the cars were originally delivered. The Red Line lost cars 2959-62 to the Purple Line, while 2973-3000 went to the Blue Line. The Brown Line also received cars 3307-08 from the Orange Line, while the Green Line traded 2531-2482 (mismatched pair), 2533-38, 2551-52 and 2599-2600 to the Purple Line in exchange for 2499-2500 (presumably to make up for the Purple Line's loss of many of its 2600-series cars).

Today, I saw several 8-car trains of 2600-series cars (with signs that read "Not in service") at the Harlem/Lake terminal of the Green Line (with their numbers ranging from the low 2600s to the lower 2960s - the range of which are normally assigned to the Red Line). I wonder which series of cars the CTA will assign to the Green Line (2600s or 3200s) in the near future, after some of the 2400s that are currently assigned to that line get reassigned to those routes that are very short in length and/or run only part-time? (Obviously, the CTA wants to keep at least some 2400s on the Green Line. After all, the Green Line has officially run entirely with 2400s -- with the exception of a few rush-hour fill-ins with 2600- or 3200-series equipment from other lines -- since that line reopened after the 1994-96 rehab.)

And the 2600-series cars from 2965 on up are now officially assigned to the Blue Line with the exception of cars 3001-3022, which are (as I have said) are now assigned to the Pink Line.
