Misdirected Ads

A couple of Kedzie 6000s (including 6032) were recently given full ad wraps with the messages in Spanish. The ad may have been for an insurance company; I remember seeing the word "seguros".

In addition, I've noticed a number of outside ads in Spanish on other Kedzie buses, including Artics. Since the 3/23 route realignments, I don't believe those ads are any longer reaching their targeted market now that the Kedzie Garage no longer feeds the 21 or 60.

Ads on the 40-footers still get limited exposure in Spanish-speaking neighborhoods along 18th Street (limited hours) as well as short sections of the 52 and 82, but the ones displayed on the Artics get much less.

Seems as if it would make a lot more sense to concentrate display of ads in Spanish on buses out of Archer and Chicago Avenue. Just wondering if the contractor, Titan Outdoor, was ever told about the route realignments.

Archer isn't left out on this; several Novas I've noticed have had Spanish ads for State Farm insurance. I don't think this would be one of those misdirected ads, since Kedzie serves a small area of the intended audience, as with Archer. The biggest idea of misdirected ads were the many White Sox ads on the Novas at Archer back in the summer that would be on those crosstown routes, like the #49 or #50, where the bus would not only be in White Sox territory, but also Cubs territory.

The sections of Spanish speaking neighborhoods on the 52 and 82 are not so short. There are many Latino riders living along the 82 for instance from maybe Grand, Division for sure, all the way up to at least Albany Park. If they don't live along the route in that section, there are definitely plenty who travel along that stretch. The short section is on the south end of the route from Cermak to 31st. You also have plenty of Latino residents and riders on the 52 on the northern end from Chicago up to Diversey if not Belmont and again on the southern portion from near the Pink Line southward to the area near the terminal at 63rd. Even after the realignments of 3/23, Kedzie garage buses do still get seen or ridden by a lot of Spanish-speakers so I agree that the ads are not as misdirected as the White Sox ads on the Novas this past summer, especially after some of those Novas went from Archer to FG. Oh and the Bulls ad wraps on the FG buses that were former Chicago buses were definitely misdirected.

Saw a lot of them at Pace Fox Valley. Of course, the ones on which I saw it were in Naperville, not Aurora. I also noted that the Spanish newspaper wrap on 6664 remained after it was transferred from Elgin to Academy. I guess the advertiser takes its chances, but since these were on 6000s, it must have been a recent development, as opposed to putting wraps on Kedzie buses before March.

I find it very interesting how the CTA has been putting many ad wraps on the soon to be retired 5300s and 4400s and some 6000s at Kedzie, but it won't touch any of the 1000 series New Flyer with a full body ad wrap. They will probably have to some day.

I do remember 1176 and one other NF at Kedzie were done in full body ads for the Chicago Marathon. This was before LaSalle Bank was gobbled up by Bank of America and when the marathon was still the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon as opposed to being the Bank of America Annual Chicago Marathon today. The buses were green with gold and black, LaSalle's old logo colors. So it's not that Kedzie hasn't touched them at all for full body ads, they just haven't done so in a while.

Well, there are over 900 NFs now and I haven't seen or heard about any ad wraps for the past two years, excluding Kedzie's- which are long gone.

I'm not disagreeing with you on that. I'm just giving giving a reminder that it has been done on the 1000s before even if it has been two years. I can understand the thinking behind it though. Why mess up the paint on a newer bus when a wrap can be done on a bus that won't be around as long. Of course they can't do that for too long though. there won't be as many older buses around soon to keep avoiding using the 1000s for ad wraps.

I think you are a little bit misguided. Part of the purpose of the wrap is so that the paint

doesn't get screwed up. At this point, they probably don't want to lose a newer bus for

the amout of time it takes to wrap something (a week ?).

So they've gotten better at removing the ads without peeling away part of the paint? That's what I was referring to when I said why mess up the paint. As for the length of time to apply ad wraps, I've heard anywhere from two weeks to a month.

It takes less than one day to wrap a bus (for a full bus wrap - with or without window coverage). The installers go into the garage (the bus doesn't have to go anywhere). They usually do it at night, when the garage isn't as busy, and the bus is ready for service the next morning. (With possibly no loss of in-service time.) I've seen it done - in person and on CTA's TV show. (The smaller ads take minutes - less than an hour and can be done during midday or overnight.)

And as for the purpose of the wrap - it certainly isn't to protect the paint. However, the CTA does prefer the direct application vinyl (ad wrap) to frames on the newer buses, because they would rather not drill holes for the frames into their newer vehicles. A properly painted and cured bus won't be damaged by removal or installation of the wrap.

Older buses, with panel damage and already-peeling paint are a different story. The vinyl application covers up the deteriorating bus and paint, but removal can make it worse. That's why they often apply one ad on top of the other. Then after it is several layers thick they remove all of them at one time. Less damage to the bus. That's why you will sometimes see a torn off ad with another showing through underneath.

Yeah, I was going to say about a morning myself. I once saw at the Blue line O'Hare terminal a train getting its wrap on track 1. It was a sunday morning, there weren't many people around. The sheets look sticky and easy to screw up, almost like laying contact paper. Some of the sheets are 2' by 2'. The biggest challenge is to get it to match up.

Speaking of wraps,

I've thought that the CTA doesn't wrap a bus when it's "brand new".

Now some of the 1000s are old enough to have full wraps.

That didn't stop 1176 from being done in a green and gold ad wrap advertising the Chicago Marathon a few months after arriving at Kedzie back before LaSalle Bank was gobbled up by Bank of America. A recent Connections episode I saw last week has a segment on how the wraps are applied to the buses and rail cars.
