I also took a ride past 77th Garage/South Shops today and took some pictures of interesting things:

1. TMC in the Perry side of the yard that Jajuan claims are all shredded (4543 next to 5843)

2. Novabus 6515 going out on a flatbed trailer

3. Flxible 5407 sitting along Vincennes Ave

Oh wow you found one TMC. Question is. is it operable? If so is it being used as a workbus? It's time in revenue service is kapoot, so doesn't matter how many you find that haven't be shredded or cannabalized for parts. The attempt to show me up is moot. It's not coming back.

I never said they were coming back, but you did say they were all shredded. Well that one, and some others that I couldn't get a better picture of, are still on the property, contrary to your statement. Parts removed can easily be put back on just as easy as they took them off also if push came to shove.

  • 5843 was against the fence when I drove by, so it looks at least like they moved it.
  • As Mike Murphy would say about 6515, "that's no gouda." Just luck that you were going by when it was being hauled? Also, I suppose some one is going to ask what kind of headsign it had.*
  • Well, I'm pretty sure 5407 isn't coming back.
  • You didn't get to the northeast corner to check out the NABIs that were there (at least when I saw them)?

My guess is that it is time for 6515 to have it's midlife rehab. After all, are not the Novas

going through that. This sighting may not mean that it is in serious mechanical distress !!!

Yesterday I was driving along Ogden Ave (Rt 34) just north of U.S. 30 and there is a storage place that has a lot of old buses parked there. I couldn't stop, but it looked like a NYC MTA New Look Flx was there and a 9000 series GMC Fishbowl. Also I think I saw a Pace Orion there as well. Is there anyone that could go by there and snap up some pics? It would be on the west side of Ogden.

Ok on that one detail, I was in error. Still doesn't change my overall point of they won't be resurrected. If speculation about the NABIs sidelining for inspection beyond the more important safety concerns is in part to make CTA look more in need of stimulus money given the flaw was known about since 2005 as pointed out on this forum and in the news reports, it looks better to leave retired buses in the graveyard to make the case to the feds about being in a bus shortage. Plus prior news reports relating to bus safety in relation to CTA's case and push of retiring buses from the 90s leaves a strike for bringing them back as the post I originally responded to was pushing for.

This is where the Chicago History Bus Museum is keeping their fleet.

Thanks for the pics.

It was odd to see the old 3300 series bus. Those are my favorite. I would have thought the CTA would have shredded all those older buses by now. I knew the CTA still had bus 301 on site somewhere but didnt think the CTA had any other older style bus intact.

Does the CTA keep one bus in each series/style after they are retired?

Unfortunately the collection has been badly vandalized.

Yup. Thats a 3300 flex aka 131. Fishbowl 9476 and MAN artic 7143

I came across this on the CTA site:

CTA’s vehicles can be rented for productions any time, except weekday rush hours (approx. 6 a.m. - 9 a.m. & 3 p.m. - 6 p.m.) or where restricted by CTA.

...

We have over 2,000 buses, in our fleet, with new models being delivered right now. We also keep three vintage buses circa 1960, which may be available for period pieces. Restoration costs will apply for using this equipment.

Could those possibly be connected? I don't know the exact years so perhaps not, still if someone won the lottery...

CTA has 8499, 301, 131 (ex-3398), 3706, and 7143, plus oddball 3091 as a rodeo bus. With the exception of 7143, they haven't been preserving buses for a long time.
