It's only a 700 foot walk from Devon & McCormick to the terminal, and at most times of the day, walking is faster than the bus' travel time between McCormick and Kedzie.

True. The only inconvenience for most that I can see is during the winter when the walkways on the bridge is snowpacked and icy. By the way the new 82 schedule is now posted.

If that's the problem, then those riders should take the 84 or 290 and go around, if that block and a half is going to be an issue. Honestly, its up to whatever entity (Chicago or Lincolnwood) to maintain the condition of that bridge so that there won't be an issue.

If the walk is a problem for transfers coming from the Brown Line, the 11, 49B, and 93 are also options.

This recalls my question whether there is a better way to get between O'Hare and Devon. Formerly, you could go Jeff Park Station 92-82-155, or Belmont Station 82-155. Probably now you would have to go Jeff Park 92-93-155 to avoid having to lug your luggage over the bridge.

Come to think about that, most of these routings are more than allowed on one fare card with 2 transfers, but I guess people are probably using pass cards by now.

Or from Cumberland - 290 to 96, 11, 93, or 49B.

While I hadn't though of that, it probably knocks it down to once every 45 minutes, per the 290 schedule at Cumberland (at least midday). Too chancy.

To go further out of the way, 250 to 93 would probably be better. At least there you get 20-30 minute frequency on Pace.

Update to my previous post, there are two different destination signs for the NFs NB on the 82 to Lincolnwood. One is the one I mentioned for the 6000s: '82 KIMBALL/HOMAN' flip '82 TO LINCOLNWOOD TOWN CENTER' (two lines, with TOWN CENTER on second line). The other just shows '82 KIMBALL' before flipping to the destination as described above. I had a chance to see both more clearly this time when doing another scout ride this evening on the 82 from the mall. The first sign I spotted on a 1630 (option 3), while the other I saw used on the 1000s and 800s that were assigned today.

Did you notice that most of the NB signs were blank. On Wed. I noticed about 10 Nb blank signs on #1000's and #6000's. The #1000's displayed a run but no route or destination. On the SB the signs were fine. There still seems to be a programming delay/glitch in progress. Weird that there still running 96's through there. They actually had more customers than the #82 up there for now. As with most new service, the riders haven't discovered this yet. The service up there is great. I believe it's just as fast as the Devon/Kedzie turnaround in the rush. Also the drivers have a nicer place up there. I saw a lot of them checking out the mall for a few minutes.

Yes I noticed that. I should have prefaced my post with out of the destination signs that were working that's what I observed. Yesterday half the NB signs were blank, and most of them were on the NFs on the route. Also on a few of the 6000s, the destinations appeared to be slightly too big. CTA also needs to place bus stop signs in the mall instead of the 82 and 96 drivers depending upon the 290 signs for passengers. The 82 missing signs there I can sort of understand, but it's crazy that there are still no 96 signs in the mall after all this time.

I also find it interesting that the 82 buses leave from in front of the mall using the farthest driveway down from the mall entrance while the 96 and 290 buses use that driveway that's right in front of the entrance.

I have observed some of the northbound 82s displaying "82 KIMBALL // to LINCOLNWOOD TOWN CTR" (the latter being on two lines). Homan seems to have been left out in the text.

There are bus stops now at Pratt and McCormick, that was not there before.

I don't really see any difference in the pickup patterns up there except for the layover in front of the Carson's store on the east end, they have more room there to not block traffic. They do need to put some bus stop signs up at the mall, It makes it somewhat confusing as to where the passenger should board. They took care of the south end, there is one on the north side of Devon NB. So far it seems the most used stop out of the bunch up there.

Yes those signs are seen mostly on NF 800s, 1100s, and 1200s (of those that actually had operating signs NB) as I noted a couple posts up.

I wasn't speaking of the boarding pattern. I was referring to how the 96 and 290 leave from in front of the Carson's store using that driveway right at the door, while the 82s leave using that far west driveway down past Carson's front door.

It really depends on the driver, I've seen #82 operators doing both. Being new to the mall perhaps some Kedzie operators are taking it safe. There are no cars or people down at the end by Kohl's to clear also the busier mall drive intersects that at more desirable angle than at the other one. Probably more of a clearance issue.

Ok. I've been running more into the drivers that use the far mall drive.. Playing it safe is a valid reason since some of the Kedzie drivers have pulled out behind a 96 or 290 and still driven down to the far drive.

I wonder if the new #173 and #175 routes, the reconfiguration of route #171, and the elimination of route #174 will also start on September 6 (or 7), 2009?

If any information on this site is true: http://www.hydepark.org/transit/ucroutes.htm#fall2009

The reconfiguration of 171 is because the U of C is closing the Shoreland dorm, and hence no need to go to 54th/South Shore.

The southwest route as apparently because of the new dorm that opens at 61st and Ellis. However, I previously mentioned that I don't think that U of C people want to go to 63rd and Cottage. It would be justified going between the new dorm and the main campus up University or Woodlawn.

BTW, the revised 173 seemed like an older idea; the direct place where you link landed said that 173 and 174 were dead. In that 171 and 174, being routed on 55th, are somewhat duplicative of 55, I question the need for them. I thought 171 made more sense when it was more of a loop via Stony Island and 60th.

So if the current #173 is discontinued, will the new #173 still be alive and begin operating in the near future, or is that going to be dead too?
As I previously mentioned, it appeared that the place to which you linked first suggested modifying 173, but then said it was completely dead.

It also could be inferred from the PowerPoint appended to the hearing notice (the notice says "Additional information on the #173 and #174 can be found here.") that it was dead, since the slide said that alternative service was available on the 6, and "University requested discontinuation of service."Also, it is unlikely that a public hearing would have been necessary if service were merely modified.

Of course, the only one who knows for sure is apparently the student who is running the U of C system for the U of C. Not that the U of C has a school of urban planning (the last I heard).
