5000-series - Updates

I'm open to either line getting 5000s. I wonder if there are any benefits to one line getting 5000s over the other.

As previously discussed, the only advantage to Purple is that some trains join up cars from Howard at Linden, so the two yards eventually have to be compatible. Also, I pointed out earlier that the numbers only work if Orange is left 2600s and 3200s.

Doesn't mean CTA is going to do either, but that's the only way the numbers they have given will work.

Whoops, didn't see that.

That set is now in howard yard. Maybe it's going out on the yellow line being hitched to #5159-60.

I think you're right. I thought the Red Line begins with #5161-62 and the Yellow Line begins with #5155-56 thru 5159-60. Maybe they were either doing a test run or training a conductor on #5345-46 earlier.

Probably isn't an independent allocation of cars to the Yellow Line at this point.

I'm still trying to figure out why they pulled #5149-5150 thru #5153-54 from the Green Line. I spotted some of them on the Red Line last week and earlier this week. I've noticed that Green and Pink Lines shares #5001-02 thru #5053-54 but I thought that Pink Line roster was #5001-02 thru #5053-5054, Green Line roster #5055-56 thru #5153-54, Yellow Line roster #5155-56 thru #5159-5160, and Red Line roster #5161-62 thru highest car number now until further notice.

Obviously they felt they needed the extra train for the outer loop on the green line. There shouldn't be 400 #5000's on the red line either when it's done. The red line should be okay with 360 cars. That's what they always had before. That would leave around 200 #5000 cars left. That should be enough #5000's for both Orange and Purple lines. Just the spare cars on the orange line would be DC cars but they probably don't want #5000's on the orange brown line morning interlines anyway.

If I'm not mistaking, I heard that the Red Line will have 384 5000s on the roster. So if it starts #5161-62 (Only if the Yellow Line permanently keep #5155-56 thru #5159-60), then the last cars will be #5543-44 in which that makes sense because I think the Purple Line had a roster of the Boeing Vertol cars (2400s) started at #2545-46 thru #2599-2600 excluding the red-white striped working cars (#2401-02 thru #2423-24) a few years ago. So therefore, it can be a possibility that the Purple Line will have the 5000s starting at #5545-46 thru #5599-5600 and Orange Line starting at #5601-02 thru #5705-5706 (I'm going by the Orange Line's original roster format which was #3201-02 thru #3305-06 (Morrison-Knudsen)). #5707-08 thru #5713-14 can be up for grabs even though that set was purchased separately because of the seating arrangements. The Blue and Brown Lines will be the only lines to share the Morrison-Knudsen cars (DC) until the production of the 7000s begins. The Budd cars (2600s) should be retired by 2017-18.

No, it wouldn't, if Midway yard stays about 154 cars, up 60 for the Brownage. Note the recent statements that the fleet will be up 60 when the deliveries are over.

And for gammon, with cars being pulled off to have their welds changed and the like, where did you get that there are permanent assignments? What are you going to do if the Santa train cars go back to Skokie in Feb.?

Yeah, but that an ambiguous statement. We don't know if it's 60 cars extra from pre #5000 delivery or if it's 60 cars on top of what's already stored. I take it as 60 cars from pre #5000 delivery because the other statement to me doesn't make sense, and that's what I interpret off the reading the budget. (maybe we need a quote :P ) Why maintain that many cars you don't need?

@gammon: The reason I say 360 (something) is because anything extra like 370 is stored cars. Especially now with a new Dan Ryan, they just don't need that many cars. Why store #5000 cars on the Red line when lines like the blue line are stuck in the last century? That's what the #2600's are for.

I have the feeling the Santa cars are going to the purple line once they come back to regular service. #2895-96 was spotted on the Purple and Red lines, before it went to Skokie Shops, so it will most likely trade between those lines. The last week they have been running any Red line #5000's on the Yellow line as the third set, but yesterday it was #5251-52 and #5283-84 (which I've seen twice already there) So far we've had reports of #5333-34, #5341-42 and my report. Is one of the yellow line #5150's down for repair? (I haven't seen #5157-58 lately)

....

I'm assuming that before Brownage Midway had about 100 cars, and the current car assignment list is 148 (based on chicago-l.org assignment sheets, although there hasn't been one since June).

The car assignment sheet says that Purple has 104 cars.

148 and 104=252, not 200.

I don't know as of when the growth is supposed to be 60 cars, but obviously if they were crushing cars at the same rate they were accepting them, all the 2200s and 2400s would be gone by now (based on your report that 346 5000s have been received, and there were no more than 340 between the two series), but they aren't.

Finally, if you deduct long term holds from the June 2013 list, there are 1296 cars as of June compared to the usual report of about 1190. So, 1250 would seem to be the minimum fleet when they are done receiving 5000s.

Hmmm that is interesting about #5251-52 and #5283-84 being on the Yellow Line. I haven't seen #5157-58 since the early summer. I haven't heard anything about #5150s being repaired but I did saw #5151-52 on the Red Line earlier on Monroe-State heading southbound. I consider the santacars as the "wild card" cars because it can be on Red, Yellow, and Purple Lines at anytime.

Well #5347-48 is there as well as #5351-52. I don't know for sure if #5349-50 is there but it probably is.

Very nice to hear that. #5349-50 should be there because it wouldn't make any sense to just skip a pair. If it wasn't for those flaws occurred two years ago, then we would have been seeing the 5000s at least low/mid 5400s to no greater than early 5500s. I'm guessing that we may see them in the 5400s before February.

I was on 5342 on Red last evening.
