#8889 is at SS.

The Novas are rolling in quickly but are very slow rolling out in service.   At least the Nova deliveries are faster than the 7000 series rail cars.

I hypothesize that may be due to installment of the new fareboxes across the remaining two garages in the system 74th/103rd. A lot of them have plates among other miscellaneous things done on them now. SS has about 55-60 awaiting various tasks as they prep them for service.

Just got a headcount of #8350s down at SS and the total is up to 72 with the highest delivered so far being #8904. #8765 is the lowest still remaining at SS. #8893 is also at SS. I'll see if anymore deliveries will occur today and tomorrow.

# 8660 is potentially retired after this bus went up in flames just after 3:00 PM this afternoon on the 66. The engine caught on fire on this cold day. If 8594 is being repaired then 8660 will be first to be retired.

This happened on 8144, 8340, and now 8660. Something seems to be up with the Novas.

If it is retired l, it might still be under warranty. CTA might get another nova out of this, unless this fire is determined to be caused by lack of maintenance

Every generation of novas we get have caught fire something isn’t adding up. Cold temperatures make it worse as fire spreads faster.

6400s: #6503 in 2003, #6813 in 2015 and #6860 in 2021.

7900s: #8144 in 2022 and #8194 in 2016

8325: #8340 last year

8350s: #8660 just now

thanks for the heads up.

Buses are normally equipped with fire suppression systems if theres a fire detected there should be liquid to quickly put it out. This is about the third time a nova has caught fire in the cold

Are those system automatic or does it require some sort of input from the operator? There must be some sort of flaw if even with the suppression system if it let's the bus go up in flames

I guess it depends on the system.   Fogmakrr has a system that requires nothing from the driver.  But since it is a water based system,  i think it's possible that if the water in the system does freeze,  it would make suppression nonexistent.   That could explain the damage done in the winter time, but it doesn't explain why the fire happened in the first place.   I don't know if the rest of the system worked properly where the engine would automatically shut down and the fuel supply automatically shuts off.

Again,  I don't know what fire suppression system that is used for the Novas.

Most likely a coolant leak or oil. lack maybe missed or not yet detected preventable maintenance  given the bus is only alittle over 1yr old.

Looks like the same kind of damage as on Pace 6574.

Might get money from Volvo, but not another Nova Bus as the plant is being shut down.

Crazy that fire actually happened the same day the aftermath damage picture was posted just hours before this fire happened. Talk about a bad week for the CTA, starting with the derailment on the Green Line on Monday morning, followed by Loop Delays on Tuesday, then ending the week with a bus on fire.
