See the pic of 5816 above...it's pretty obvious that the bus is operating on the 64. Whether

5816 and 5837 are there for the week or until scrap is unknown, but they are there and operating, bustracker or not !!!!

ok i rescind that comment. now i've seen it all...first optimas working the 151 and now this.

WHATS NEXT...? 4000s on the 64?

and while i'm at it that operator operating the 81W is a Forest Glen operator I know his face. He just didn't change the P to an F.

5822 is still alive. Picked it up at south shops yesterday for a 135/136. Then parked it back at NP.

BusHunter had #5822 listed as retired back in mid October, but it's possible that the list of 15 5800s for this month remaining is missing a few buses that were reported as being on the scrap line at the South Shops, but were brought back from the dead for some reason.....maybe a shortage of buses at FG and NP?

However, does seem to support that the couple of sightings were of transfers and not fill-ins, and might explain how FG is otherwise coping with posters here saying that FG was short.

As far as trainman on the transfers or whatever--here NP and FG are close enough that it isn't too egregious. But one would wonder about a transfer of buses soon to be retired, unless that indicates... (you can fill in the blank).

If Forest Glen does recieve the 1000s, the CTA would be heading in the opposite direction from their initial consolidation plan. Since there would not be enough 1000s to replace all 6000s at FG, they would be maintaining three 40 foot bus types at one garage, even though they seemed strongly opposed to just two.

I guess this again depends on the definition. For instance, there is the discrepancy between pace2322's view that a bus is in service as long as it has a license plate and inspection certificate, compared to the number of Pace buses on the street, compared to the number listed in the annual budget, none of which match.

I'm not going to be prying into sources again, but having driven past the Perry yard, I have the feeling that a CTA bus is not out of service until "SCRAP" and "DEFUELED" are painted on it. (See example in a post from about 2-1/2 years ago).

Of course, if any CTA insider has a more definitive standard, please let us know.

November's update drops up down to 15 left at North Park. They are #5806, #5808, #5816, #5818 - #5820, #5831, #5833 - #5835, #5837, #5843, #5845, #5847, and #5863. Retired are #5803, #5805, #5824, #5829, #5830, #5838, #5841, #5844, #5846, #5848, #5857 and #5862.

December's update takes us down to 5 left at North Park. They are #5816, #5820, #5834, #5837 and #5843. Retired are #5806, #5808, #5818, #5819, #5831, #5833, #5835, #5845, #5847 and #5863.

They retirement process for the 5800s is really winding up. Wow. Only five buses left. I remember in the mid 90s when all 65 were here. They ran great to me in those days. I'm glad to see that 5837 is still around. I rode that bus about a month ago and it was a rather nice ride.

I spotted #5816 operating #144 on Northbound Lake Shore Drive by the zoo while I was going southbound, I really still love them and I will surely miss them. :(

Of the New Flyers I liked these 5800s more than the 1000s because of the Detroit Diesel. I am not too fond of the Cummins engines in the 1000s. IMO those sound weak!

Well that's part of the lower emissions standards for new buses built in this day and age. The loud growl of days past is now becoming history regardless of who makes the engine now. As for the Cummins engine in the 1000s, those have a pretty good growl of their own if you happen to be riding one numbered lower than 1630. They actually sound stronger than a 5800's Detroit Diesel sorry to say. The lighter body frames of 1630 and above dulls the engine roar quite a bit in those buses. However things do change in life and overall the 1000s and 800 series hybrids are a good substitute for my all time favorite Americanas which finally got the total axe in 2004. Outside of the 5800s, CTA's fleet was pretty boring to me in those days between the last Americana runs in April 2004 and those first 1000s in service on Archer routes in 2006.

You know, I rode #1936 on the 29 this past Saturday, and IMO, it's 4290 for this generation. I really like the growl in 2nd and 3rd gear. You've gotta hear it.

IMO, I dont think the 5800s will be missed by no means with brand new New Flyer 40 footers in service.

BTW has anyone noticed if the 5800s had/have squeaky rear doors? The rear doors on our D35LFs start squeaking at about 40mph since the side rub. Its not too bad, just noticeable.

Just like the Normal RTS buses with their doors that slides open/close normally makes lotta squaeking noise. I know I grew up in Michigan with GMC RTS 03/04s in Lansing and Detroit.

Look for the 5800's final day to be Monday, January 26th... That is the day some NP routes that might use these buses will finally be on Bustracker.... #22, #36, #49B, #93, #96, #97. Most of these routes probably use the 5800's right now, but I haven't been on any in a while, so I'm not sure about this information.

Countdown to 5800's final farewell.... 5 days(speculation based on most routes that use them will have bustracker on this date). Anyone wanting photos and last riding opportunities better start now!!! The days are counting if I am right.... again, just speculation!

But your forgetting that the #135, #136, #144 are where the #5800's are put nowadays. No bustracker yet there. And then there always a chance of having one on a Bustracker route. It sure didn't deter #5837 from being on the #146 a day or two ago.

Had 5837 today for 6 hours, the bus still runs well, would hate to see it go and have more 6000's brought in. And from what matin. is saying we are short on equipment at NP (hence the flexibles). So don't count on them being gone just yet.

I'm not doubting they still run well... I'm still disappointed we are junking them already! We spent millions to overhaul the Detroit Series-50 Engines in them, and put a few LED displays in some. I think these buses could've been around till maybe 2010-2011, IMO. They run good(some do squeal, I'll give you that), but they kneel, their ramps deploy, and they are low floor(which is what the ADA wants today).
