How come the NABI buses cannot be assigned to Archer or 74th Garage, they used to run the 79 79th Street route, and 87 87th Street route, but that's not what I'm saying, A long time ago (my other posts) I saw NABI running 49 Western-79th,and how come it's not assigned to eighter 74th or Archer Garage, how come it gets the North/East Side garages.

Heres another question, Why would you want the NABIs at Archer or 74? Theyre causing enough trouble at the garages theyre at now. Theyre nice looking buses, just too bad theyre not quality.

At one time there were MAN articulateds at Archer, but that ended after the Orange Line was completed, and the need for all those 62, 99, 162, and 164 express buses diminished.

Basically, the idea for NABIs were for high volume Lake Shore Drive routes. Archer and 74th obviously don't have any LSD routes (and Archer apparently no space at the present).

For that matter, the better question would have been why there are fewer ones at 77th than there were 2 years ago (as you noted, 79 and 87 had them), but the answer probably is that they were needed to cover the LSD routes.

Now, as the 4000s are implemented, we'll get a better idea of what will happen. However, since Archer mostly has light routes, the only immediate candidate to get articulateds is if X49 goes BRT.

Also, a second for 5750's comment.

I also agree... but at a more higher level question. Who in their right mind would order these junks?

PACE hates theirs, the CTA is ordering New Flyer DE60LF's to increase their Articulated fleet plus allow them to band-aid, duct tape, staple gun, and crazy glue these buses back together so they may complete the FTA 12-yr. minimum requirements.

This is all quite comical. I remember way back when I joined this forum,

NABI's were relatively new. At that time I remember talking to someone

who once was a somebody in Seattle who commented to me that CTA was

going to be in trouble with the NABI's because they just weren't good buses.

He even snickered when I told him about Pace putting so much into their

fleet with 35 and 40 footers.

Someplace in the history of our forum, this is all documented. Funny how

sometimes, things turn out like people tell you they will.

But, then again, there is L.A. Were you implying something about "right mind?"

Also, I didn't see CTABoy advocating buying more.

How about still another question - How much flexibility does a transit authority have when using Federal funds? We know that in many instances the low bidder is chosen. Can bad experience with a supplier be used as a reason to disqualify a vendor? Also, when CTA solicited bids on the 7500 artics which manufacturers bid?

Well, when procured, the CTA said that NABI was the lowest bidder, meaning that there were others out there that did bid on it. New Flyer comes to mind, since they've had a D60LF model since the 1990's. There may have been others, but I haven't a clue who they were... Flxible was gone, and I don't know if they even had 60' articulateds, I don't know if Optima was around at the time of the bid placement, nor if they made 60' buses. NOVA is just starting to make articulateds now, so I doubt they bid on the job, unless they told CTA they would get to work on a prototype model and have it ready in a few years.

Sure don't know who bid.

However, based on the CTA's problems in the late 1980s, the problem is basically if you slant the specifications so you want a sole source procurement, the other companies can complain to the FTA. That's why TMCs and Flxs were acquired in 1990.

However, not even that seems to prevent it today. While CTA uses the standard bus spec, I noted that the manufacturer's history on the model was part of the spec, which would have given CTA the right to reject NABI as a supplier of articulated hybrid buses, even if it had been a Proposer #2.

On the other hand, L.A., by specifying a 45 foot composite bus virtually handed NABI the deal, even though there was an experimental bus manufacturer who also bid. However. L.A. rejected that bid on the basis that the experimental company has made only 5 or 10 buses, which didn't show enough experience.

I previously mentioned that NABI (while still in Hungary) announced that it was the apparent low bidder on what became the 1000s, but then announced that a contract wasn't made, supposedly because of budget issues. On the other hand, that was also when the problems with the 7500s were hitting the media, so unless one is a CTA insider, one doesn't know the real reason why the RFP was pulled back, and not advertised for another year, when NF got the contract.

It looks like that, at least in the big city transit market, NF, NABI, and Orion have carved it up. Now, if something like the Nova or Citaro reportedly being tested in NY had entered the market earlier, there might be a difference, but, as I implied before, if there was a Proposer #2, only CTA knows that.

When you look at it in a nutshell there really isnt much to offer out there in the way of bus manufacturers. In this tight economy builders and suppliers are going out of business one after another. One can only hope that the remaining bus builders will still be in business. A sign of the times.

Or you could say NABI= Need Another Bus Immediately. I'm sure that what many operators would say stranded on the side of the road in the cold. I wouldn't be surprised if the NABI's do end up on the Ashland or Western corridors. They'll need to go somewhere once the LSD routes get flooded with #4000's.
