I am just guessing that 6 car trains eliminates the person that moves the coupled/uncoupled cars to and from the storage tracks before and after the rush periods. I think Metra does the same.

Those people are still there, they just have less tasks assigned to them now that trains aren’t lengthened or shortened to accommodate rush hour. They still lay up trains and put them out to the terminal tracks when needed. Adds and cuts are done when a unit is defective and needs to be taken out of service.

There isn't any "back up contract." Alstom didn't bid, and if you are implying it inherited something from Bombardier in the merger, CTA told Bombardier where to go with its protest. I only mentioned Alstom in connection with TTC.

As I said before, it would take the CT Board to declare a default, which it has not done.

I doubt the CTA would ever have a back up contract with Alstom after the 5000 order and when they acquired Bombardier Transportation thanks to budget restrictions with Alstom's record of incompatible trains on the U.S Market.

2657-2658 2799-2800 from Orange Line spotted near 5271-5272 recently at Skokie shops

They’ve still got 5271-5272 at Skokie,I wonder what is with that pair which has been out for three years now… #5507-08 were on LTH for two years I believe around 2018, they’ve been running ever since. There’s two other 5000s with 5271-72 that is LTH. CTA stated it’s 4 cars total.

Do you know what else went to scrap with 3085 3086

How soon will a pair(s) of 2600-Series cars go to the Illinois Railway Museum for preservation? Probably not for a while (this probably will happen closer to when the entire series is retired). Also, could 2600-Series cars join the CTA’s Heritage Fleet (2600-Series cars would be preserved that way as well)?

It isn't automatic. Maybe you want a membership, or donate to IRM, so it can afford it.

Current roster of electric cars is here, to give an idea what IRM collects.

Of course there will be a heritage fleet of 2600-series cars, the question is wonder if it will be 4 or 8 cars. They’ve done 8 with the 2400s so why not do 8 with them it’ll also come to pick the cars that’s at least in decent to fair shape. It may be a while before anything new joins IRM and the heritage fleet.

How likely is it that one or more pairs of the higher-numbered 2600-Series cars that are work cars will be chosen for preservation (IRM or CTA Heritage Fleet)? Since the work cars are no longer used for passenger service, they are probably used less than other 2600-Series cars, which means that they have a better chance at being in decent condition.

If in good condition, I think they would be interested in 3199+3200, as the last Budd built transit cars (although rebranded Transit America in the mid 1980s.)

I don’t think they’ll give IRM 3199-3200 even though that will save them from the shredder I would like to agree with you on that. Now that they are work motors CTA would keep them for work service. I can imagine if they sold only half of the 2400s to scrap and kept the other along with the 2600s. Let’s just say many of us grew up seeing 2400s and 2600s on the same train in work service.

The following Orange Line trains are currently sitting in the Harlem Green Line Yard

#2783-2784

#2789-2790

#2791-2856

#2799-2800

#2877-2878

#2883-2884

#2889-2890

#3085-3086

#3093-3094

is there any reason why those cars have traveled to the Green Line yard?

As of 12/19/2023 Harlem yard has the following cars from the Orange Line (most of them were there last year too)

#2791-2856

#2877-2878

#3093-3094

#3117-3118

Soon, if the very first two cars of 2600 series was retiring with is number 2601-2602. They might sent to the railway museum for preseved?

If they are not wrecks, "soon" may be when the 9000s show up.

I rode on them last week! Couldn’t believe they’re still in service.

I hope this pair survives as long as possible. Even tho they’ll be 43 years old this year these are special along with #3199-3200 which those are now work motors.

As a frequent brown line and blue line rider I’ll be so happy when the 2600s are fully retired. Part of me wishes something bad would happen to them to make the 2600s fleet retired abruptly forcing CTA to either pick up all options for the 7000s or be short on expanding the fleet until the 9000s show up.
