Maybe this observation is related to this topic. There are several routes where the route names seem obsolete, including:

  • 157: Streeterville-Taylor. There's only a block or so on Taylor near the Juvenile Court, should be Streeterville-Ogden.
  • 60: Blue Island-26th: Most of Blue Island Ave. near UIC and Pilsen/Juarez HS is gone. should be just 26th.
  • 11 Lincoln: After truncation, should be N. Kedzie.

Any others?

I thought about #60 Little Italy-Pilsen/26th or UIC-26th.

95 should still be 93rd/95th.

If the #151 shorts still existed should have been #153 Stockton/Michigan.

I might agree with 95 93/95th if the 100 were changed to 95E 95th/106th or 106 95th/106th which would give us a 103W west 103rd and a 103E Easr103rd ( i prefer extending the 28 from Olive Harvey to 95th Red Line).

The only reason I would leave 60 Blue Island/26th intact is because 26th becomes Blue Island east of Western.   As another example,  the 86 was Narragansett before the extension to the Ridgeland Green Line station.   When the extension occurred the route added Ridgeland to the name because Ridgeland is the name of the street in the suburbs .  The route only runs 1 1/2 miles on Ridgeland,  but its practically the same street as Narragansett.   Garfield and 55th are practically the same street.   Kimball and Homan are the same street.   When 26th crosses Western and becomes Blue Island,  it does take on a more northeastern trajectory but it is continuous.

The 153 used to be the Wilson/Michigan route that terminated at Michigan and Congress.  The 153 was eliminated with the portion north of Belmont replaced by the 145 and the portion south of Belmont folded into the 151.  This made sense since the 151 and 153 were running together from Lakeshore and Sheridan to Michigan and Adams.  Even if the short turns were kept,  there wouldn't be a need for a new route number or name.

The 157 travels on Taylor from Clinton to Paulina as well as past Ogden. It is the street this route operates on the most on the west side.

I would say that it operates on a longer stretch of Ogden between Western and Pulaski, which is why @Busjack suggested,  and I agree, that it should be Ogden instead of Taylor.  Taylor worked when the route ended at Ogden and California  but the extension to the Pulaski Pink Line station changed that.

There's hardly anything on 106's routing worth extending the 28 through. The only generator (Olive Harvey) is already served by 28, after that the area is isolated by the expressways until like Cottage, then you get to Michigan and got all the other buses heading to the red line duplicating. Better to extend #28 to replace #111A. Btw why is East 106th ridership so weak? Is it because Indiana is close by and has everything cheaper so the only thing coming further Into the city for is employment? (Thus the rush only 100?)

What i am saying is replace the 106 with the 28, not run it in addition.

The 106th portion was once part of the 106 E 103/106.   The buses that went to 112th/ Avenue C didn't serve Olive Harvey College.   Only the short turns served Olive Harvey.   There was decent ridership on the 106th portion when those trips didn't serve the College.   CTA decided to make all trips serve Olive Harvey which added 10 minutes of travel time in each direction and help kill that portion of the ridership.

Adding the 106th portion to the 100 wasn't really going to improve travel time that much. But the addition of the 26 gave those passengers a one seat ride option to downtown.   While the 100 provides a connection from the southeastern side of the city, very few, if any, use it.  No one is traveling between Jeffery Manor and the Southeast Side or vice versa.

The 100, 103, and 106 can all be combined when the Red Line Extension opens in 2031.

As for the 157, the Ogden portion is slightly longer than Taylor, but most of the ridership is on Taylor St.

That's correct according to the 8/2025 timetable, but that's small potatoes compared to the length on Ogden. It isn't like it is or was straight Taylor from Clinton to Western.

On @artthouwill's prior point on Garfield  when 6 and 55 were combined in 1969, it was 55 Garfield-55, but when the route  name was put on the front sign in about 1973 it and other names, such as 155 Devon Sheridan, were shortened.

Well CTA finally fixed the 34S Michigan problem.   SB destination signs now read:to 131st/Ellis ."  Certainly is better than 95th/Red Line.

I noticed that on March 31 myself

That's on them.  At Jefferson Park  South Terminal  the 81 is the first bus loading zone.  The 81W is the 4th loading zone.   Changing from a W to an A will not change this

That's more of an issue of changing the numbering theory. At about the same time, there were 90N and 63W.

There are certain things that could have been done. When CTA did away with 22A (now 24) and 36A (now 29), it could have done away with all letters and given them numbers. Or they could have made every extension N, S, E, or W, eliminating that 53A is south and so is 54B, and that there is no longer a 49A to go with 49B.

Foster Laqawrence was 64; W Lawrence could go back to 64.
