chgofan78
Its funny because the bus stop signs reflect the opposite destination. The 145 buses say to Wilson and Ravenswood but the bus stop sign has to Damen and Lawrence and vice versa for the 148. I'm curious as to why the short runs to Grace/Lake Shore have Wilson on there sign when service doesn't touch Wilson at all.
brucejdetw
I know this kinda picky, but on the New Flyers, the destination signs show the word "to" with the route number and name. For example, the signs show this: 29 State to Navy Pier 62 Archer to Harlem 22 Clark to Polk The correct way, as it has been done in the past, is to have the word "to" appear with the terminal when the sign "flips" to the other message. For example: 29 State to Navy Pier I know this picky, but to me it just looks better and makes better sense to have the word "to" appear with the destination, not the route number and name. Busjack
I'm curious as to why the short runs to Grace/Lake Shore have Wilson on there sign when service doesn't touch Wilson at all.Historical. When the North Lake Shore Drive restructuring was first done, only the 146 went local between Irving Park and Belmont during rush hour. Essentially the 145 became the 148 during rush hour because the people along the route in the Irving Park to Belmont part complained that they lost one route, so they got the 145 back. I also believe that the 145 was cut back at some point from Montrose to Grace (but don't hold me to that). We had various debates here before about what's the difference between the current 145 and 146, essentially that the inbound 145 is on Michigan and 146 on State. However, the historical names never get cleaned up (such as the Indiana-Hyde Park, which no longer is on Hyde Park).
cta_44499_FG
No, it probably is a mess up more like the 147 N.B. to Balbo. The Harlem ones are just because most people don't know where Neva is, which is a block or two short. Broadway (Red Line station) and Ravenswood Ave. are about a mile apart. More if the loop is actually through Damen/Lawrence. Don't forget you also have the 77 to HARLEM for the short turns, but the actual terminus is at Octavia, two blocks further west, and I'm sure most know it's an off street loop. I'm sure there's many whom wouldn't have a clue where Octavia was either.

It also probably has to do with how the interline between 145 and 148 works during the PM rush. With the PM service after 148 begins, those runs operate as follows: the first 148s are pullouts from Kedzie, then go SB as a 145 after reaching the end of the Damen/Lawrence loop to Ravenswood/Wilson, then NB as a 145 short run after reaching Congress/Wells, deadhead back downtown after Lake Shore/Grace and then become a 148 again. The 145s already out and reaching Congress/Wells at around 3pm become the first 145 short runs and add themselves into interline as stated above upon reaching Lake Shore/Grace by deadheading back downtown to become the 4pm hour 148s. The 151 short runs still say 'Sheridan' despite service only touching Sheridan between Diversey and Belmont.

Busjack
... The 151 short runs still say 'Sheridan' despite service only touching Sheridan between Diversey and Belmont. Which sort of brings me back to my point. If a 145 rush hour is actually a "Wilson" short turn (and the CTA was putting the stress on the part between Belmont and Irving Park, which is always local on 145), what else could it be called? The 145 Other Inner Drive Mich Express? It couldn't be called the 145 Sheridan Mich Express because the road is apparently named LSD and not Sheridan between Belmont and Irving Park. I'll keep my head from exploding over that one.
geneking7320
So I'll ask the question here. What are CTA's official rules for the naming (and numbering) of it's bus routes? Gene King

trainman8119
Could that be possibly LaSalle?or Lake Shore Dr? Its actually La Salle. Its funny how the ADA wizzos feel that a big sign with lights that tells you nothing is better than the roll signs that did.

MetroShadow
They could change NB #135 sign because what street is LAS? This just goes to show that the consistency (or common sense) hasn't changed in 5 years. Before the realignment, we were only subjected to "MICH EXP" or "LaSalle EXP" on the flip dot signs. It took the realignment in 2003 to achieve some consistency (as for as which specific route the number is assigned to). I know some routes still had the old route signs at first, but that evened out as time moved on. It still doesn't make sense of how screwy this system still is. If PACE hasn't done much of anything with their 2-row signs, and if some routes on the CTA side have 2 row signs, why can't they do it still with these routes? BTW, I was on a 145 short turn in 2003-04 where the route ended at Belmont (and deadheaded southward). The sign said "145 Michigan// to belmont" which threw me off. jajuan
The new 21 EB destination signs display '21 CERMAK' flip '21 TO MICHAEL REESE HOSPITAL' (on 2 rows) flip 'via MCCORMICK PL'.

I thought the 2nd flip was '21 TO MERCY HOSPITAL', on 2 rows, unless that's another version of the destination sign floating out there. Guest
I remember when I worked at Kedzie Garage back in 1997 the 52 Kedzie/Calif Flx 6000 buses had "52 Kedzie California/Addison Mall" signage. I dont know if they still have it in the buses data system but I still have the route code guide for Kedzie Garage when I worked there. Actually it is. Sorry for the mixup. I was watching a news report about the Michael Reese Hospital campus possibly being torn down when I put the original post and typed Michael Reese when I meant Mercy Hospital. Zol87
I know this thread is for destination sign errors, but I can't find another place to put this one. I was on the 84 Peterson bus and the inside LED sign at the front of the bus said "Brwyn Mawr Red Line." Berwyn Mawr? LOL

MCTSmke
I'm curious as to why the [145] short runs to Grace/Lake Shore have Wilson on there sign when service doesn't touch Wilson at all. I think it is because route 145 is called "Wilson/Michigan Express" and the sign is designed to show the route name and destination, even if the streets in the route name are not served on a short trip. Which brings me to a question, does such a sign confuse people, or is this a good practice?

They could follow the Pace method of, essentially "145 To Lake Shore-Grace only" and skip the route name, but I doubt that CTA would do that. Or do it similar to how it was done before the NOVAs arrived when no more than 15 characters on the signs could be supported. Use '145 MICH EXP' or just '145 EXPRESS' (a la the former 14 EXPRESS or 147 EXPRESS) before the flip indicating Grace/Lake Shore.
