Rail Line(s) Affected: Red

Service Interruption Severity: Service Disruption due to equipment problems between Howard and Wilson. Rail service is only operating between Wilson and 95th at this time.

Alternate Service: Shuttle Buses are available to provide connecting service through the affected area(s).

Service Interruption Update: Service is suspended due to a derailment of a Red Line train near the Granville station.

Service Interruption Update(4:20p): Rail service is only operating between Bryn Mawr and 95th at this time. Service is suspended between Howard and Bryn Mawr. A shuttle train is now available to provide connecting service through the affected area(s) as well as the shuttle buses already in place.

Service Interruption Update(4:43p): Rail service is only operating between Granville and 95th at this time. Service is suspended between Howard and Granville. A shuttle train remains in service to provide connecting service through the affected area(s) as well as the shuttle buses already in place.

Service Interruption Update(6:18p): Rail service remains suspended between Howard and Granville, with the shuttle train and shuttle buses to provide connecting service through the affected area(s). No timetable is to when Red Line service will fully resume north of Graville. Video feed from ABC 7 Chicago shows 2537-2538 and 2803-2804 mostly, so one of these pairs is most likely part of that third car that derailed.

Service Interruption Update(6:39p): CTA has announced they hope to have Red Line service restored within six hours from now, which means by 12:40a-1a at the latest service should be restored, if not sooner...

Service Interruption Update(9:09p): Red Line service has resumed with minor delays, approx. 5 hours after the derailment occured, but 95th-bound trains are not stopping at Morse, Loyola, Granville, Thorndale, and Bryn Mawr due to emergency repairs(new alert will be posted...)

I speculate there is damage to the tracks up there, or the CTA has finally realized that the same issue that occured on October 1st happened again and are repairing/replacing the defective stretch of rail that is causing it.

Rail Line(s) Affected: Purple

Service Interruption Severity: Service Disruption between Howard and South Blvd. due to equipment problems. Trains are only operating between South Blvd. and Linden at this time.

Alternate Service: Shuttle buses are available to provide connecting service through the affected area(s).

Service Interruption Update: Service is suspended due to a derailment of a Red Line train near the Granville station.

Service Interruption Update(4:46p) Service is resuming with Minor residual delays possible.

Story(Sun Times)

This story says initially a six-car train, then a eight-car, so it's either a Red or Purple Line train that derailed.

Update: Now story confirms throughout it was an eight-car train, so it is a Red Line train that derailed.

Didn't this just happen a month ago????

Rail Line(s) Affected: Red

Service Interruption Severity: Service Disruption w/ Major Delays due to a derailment in the area of Granville.

Same exact area, perhaps the exact area..

From the Tribune story, sure sounds the same (although it says "Lukidis said she does not know yet if today's incident was related to an Oct. 1 switching problem in the same area.") Article also says that Yellow Line is down and Purple Line won't go south of Howard, the first of which also sounds familiar. One of the pictures in the image gallery also looks familiar.

But we were assured that last time that there was nothing wrong there.:o

Article also says that Yellow Line is down

I don't understand the shutdown of the Yellow Line. It doesn't go anywhere near Granville. It just goes from Howard to Skokie and back. That sounds like a major inconvience for Yellow Line riders there.

But we were assured that last time that there was nothing wrong there.:o

Well, since the CTA is keeping Red Line service suspended from Howard to Granville for six hours since the incident, then my guess is they found out it was the same issue that caused the October 1st derailment and are repairing/replacing that stretch of track, or today's derailment damaged some running or third rail near Granville. I doubt this six hour delay is because of the two railcars involved in the derailment. My guess is those cars (2537-2538 or 2803-2804) have been taken to Howard Yard and put out of service for damage inspection before they see service again on the Red Line.

Rail Line(s) Affected: Red

Service Interruption Severity: Minor Delays as 95th-bound trains are not stopping at Morse, Loyola, Granville, Thorndale and Bryn Mawr due to emergency repairs.

-For service to these stations, take a 95th-bound train to Argyle and transfer to a Howard-bound train.

-For service from these stations, take a Howard-bound train to Howard and transfer to a 95th-bound train.

There is no timetable as to how long these repairs will take, so allow extra travel time until further notice...

Service Interruption Update(7:11a): Rail service has resumed to normal status at some point overnight. 95th-Bound trains are now stopping at all earlier skipped stops.

As I surmised earlier, I think it has to do with the new signal control system at Howard. But others said that I didn't know what I was talking about. Obviously, though, a derailment by itself, at Granville shouldn't close down the other lines at Howard, unless something else is going on. Now will anybody tell us?:o

Update: The later version of the Tribune article said "Service on the Purple and Yellow lines was back to normal as of about 5 p.m."

The power feeder section limits over there go from Thorndale to just south of South Boulevard, which includes Howard station, so that is why Yellow and Purple Line trains were affected

I did notice Busjack saying something about the Yellow Line shutdown during the October 1st derailment(I never saw it on the CTA Alerts page), and the Purple Line was never disrupted as it ran it's normal route during that derailment uninterrupted. I'm just surprised about the differences in service interrupting from the identical October 1st derailment vs. the November 4th one.

I boarded a northbound Red Line train yesterday [11/4/2012] around 6:15pm at the 35th street station. I don't recall any warning at that station or in transit until we reached Addison or Sheridan. If I had known I could have exited the train in the Loop and taken a #147 to Howard. Why was info so lacking in this case?

It was the same at Howard around 9:00 p.m. last night. There were at least 15 people waiting 10 to 15 minutes on the platform before other passengers told them to go downstairs and catch shuttle buses.
