Hybrid "green" buses

Not that these will be the only ones, but some new Hybrid buses have arrived today@S.Holland. :D

Not really wanting to doubt your post, but these are Hybrids? The only vehicles that Ford makes that are Hybrids are the Fusion Hybrid, Escape Hybrid, and the Transit Connect EV, which I think is an all-electric vehicle, according to the Ford website. While searching, it seems like the E-450 has a V-8 engine that is marked as a Flex Fuel vehicle, whatever that means. In the past, the E-Super Duty Vans were equipped with a 5.4L Triton V-8 or 7.3L(1994-2003), 6.0L(2003-Present) Powerstroke Diesel Engine. I've never heard of an E-Series Hybrid.

Azure Dynamics takes new Ford E-450 chassis and converts them to hybrid vehicles. From Azures website ( http://www.azuredynamics.com/investors/documents/PR_June28_2010.pdf ) "Azures Balance Hybrid drive system is integrated on the market leading Ford E-450 chassis. The Balance system manages the conventional 5.4 litre Ford Triton engine and the 5-speed automatic Torqshift transmission to produce a cleaner more efficient vehicle at affordable cost."

The Pace order is part of an IDOT order for 34 paratransit vehicles for seven mass transit districts in IL. From Reuters:-

"Azure Dynamics Corporation Receives 34 Unit Bus Order Via Illinois Department Of Transportation

Wednesday, 2 Jun 2010 07:30am EDT

Azure Dynamics Corporation announced a 34 unit Balance Hybrid Electric bus sale via the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). IDOT will leverage available funding from a Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction (TIGGER) Grant to help offset acquisition costs. Midwest Transit Equipment of Kankakee, IL will be the dealership for the contract."

Other documents about this purchase suggests 31 vehicles were to be ordered ( http://www.nwmc-cog.org/Documents/TransportationNewsletter_100209.aspx ) of which Pace were allocated 10 vehicles. However this predates the final order.

Basically, all you have said is correct, but, as you note, the numbers keep shifting.

The Illinois DOT will use the $4 million grant to purchase 31 paratransit hybrid buses to replace their existing fleet of gas and diesel vehicles. Buses will be powered by Azure Dynamics hybrid system of Michigan. Agencies included in this statewide effort are: Champaign Urbana MTD; Rockford MTD; St Clair MTD; Springfield MTD; PACE Suburban Bus; Rock Island MTD; and Bloomington-Normal Public Transit System.

Pretty much everyone else quotes the Azure Press Release for 34. This one indicates that "Illinois will leverage a TIGGER grant," so maybe it kicked in a bit of state money, or got a better deal.

A Flex Fuel vehicle is one that can also use E-85 ethanol gasoline, or lower octane gasoline. I own a 2010 Yukon XL that's a Flex Fuel vehicle.

Pace Oct. 2024 agenda includes "Ordinance authorizing the award of a contract to Gillig, LLC for the purchase
of 47 hybrid electric buses in an amount not to exceed $54,210,401.00.."

Starting here in the video, Metzger said 23 are 40 foot and 24 are 35 foot, and they are to replace buses as old as 2007. Thus, 23 appear to replace 2600s that were not replaced by the 20300s and 23200s. She also said this was not out of the Low/No Grant🤨.

This is a piggyback order from the State of Washington.   However it is separate from the previously mentioned order that Pace was seeking for  39 electric hybrid buses.  Melinda Metzger indicated that she was hopeful that this would also come as a piggyback order from the State of Washington.    Perhaps that order could come from the  Low/No Grant.

They didn't say where these buses are going.  So since the 2600s are all over the place, are these buses going to one location and Pace will just move 20300s and 22300s around?  Or will they just stick these buses in affected garages (FV, Heritage, etc.)?  Also wonder if this would affect garages such as Batavia which runs 711 and 715?  I'd also wonder where the 40 footers would go?  Wild as this is, 6323 and beyond hit the 12 year mark this year.  Crazy how time has flown.

As far as the 40 ft electric hybrids go, I suppose they could land anywhere,  but I would probably guess NW first, especially if the other order of 39 electric hybrids are also 40 ft buses.  Even if that order also has some sort of 35ft/40 ft mixture, I would look for NW to get those 40 ft buses.  Then NW could send some of its 6323s to West.

SW could also be an option as well since its a smaller size garage and could be the greenest garage with a nearly all hybrid fleet along with the two electric buses they would have which are Gillig buses that SW has some familiarity with.  West would also receive their 6323s which shouldn't be as beat up.

I don't have any inside information, but the 44 22300s were (according to RTAMS) supposed to go to R and Batavia (MV), but 22 went to H, apparently to give Plainfield a nearly new fleet. That ended up with R getting most of NS's 30 foot buses and a mix of others, including on Route 606, where they are too small.  Anyway, I would expect something to R.

All of the outer divisions had 35' buses at one time (2000s, 2272s, and 6600s), and Highland Park, too, but IMO, HP now can only support On Demand. On the other hand, they made a big deal about having to upgrade Niles Public Works to handle 30' buses, so I don't see it getting 35' ones.

Metzger indicated at the board meeting that there would be another order, and, for the dr. who misses other topics, that the Gilligs would be geofenced, to run in electric mode in certain neighborhoods.
