Scrap rail cars

Speaking of scrap, CTA also has a proposal to sell scrap rail cars 2470, 2855, and 3031 from Skokie Shops.

Their mates are on the chicago-l.org list of mismatched cars (3032 now being 3458).

Anyone have the story on how these were wrecked?

Not sure about 2855 and 3031, but 2470 was the unit that caught fire on the Green Line around 35th where the Motorman had the passengers evacuate the train and he took it, fire and all, to the middle tracks at 37th St. so the CFD could put it out. 2470 was the unit that caught fire, 2469 survived with little to no damage and was re-mated with 2504.

I don't know what made cars 2855 and 3031 permanently inoperable, but the list does not include cars 2503 and 2792. I believe 2792 might have been already scrapped. 2503, however, was removed from revenue service due to a leaky roof and was subsequently converted to an emergency training car.

#3031 burned up I believe on the south branch of the Howard/Jackson Pk. Eng.

Interesting that I did a search of chicago-l.org and the only thing it says is that " 3031 was damaged at some point," in explanation of why 3032 became 3458. You would think that Graham would have known.

That was back in the early 1990's, when the 3000's up to car #3100 were assigned to what was then the North-South Route. The fire in #3031 occurred before the 1993 switch in the through-routing from Englewood/Jackson Park-Howard to the current Lake-Englewood/Jackson Park (Green Line) routing. At that time, the North-South Route had a fleet of 2600-series cars and 2000-series cars. Upon the switch, 2400-series cars replaced the 2000's on what is now the Red Line while the 2000's were reassigned to the now-Green Line.

Today, the 3000's are now assigned to the Blue Line except for the 3032-turned-3458, which is currently assigned to the Brown Line. The reassignment of the 3000's from the Red Line to the Blue Line occurred during the cars' mid-life rehab, which began in 1999 and ran to 2002. The 3100's, however, have always been officially assigned to the Blue and Pink Lines (the successors to the West-Northwest Route). The use of 3100's on other lines have so far been limited to the Green Line - and only if that line is short on operable cars.

As of recently, several individual 2400- and 2600-series cars have now been authorized for retirement (AFR'd):

2400 Series: 2470, 2503, 2579

2600 Series: 2702, 2722, 2978

These AFR'd cars are in addition to the several pairs of 2200s listed as retired on 6/12/2011 in the 2200-series thread.

In addition, 2400-series car 2580 and 2600-series cars 2710, 2721 and 2977 remain on long-term hold.

The result is that there are now 190 2400's and 590 2600's (95 and 295 operable pairs, respectively) remaining in service.

What's up with MK Units 3351-3352? They're marked on chicago-l.org as Long-Term Holds. I know the Brown Line had that derailment near Kedzie where some units were damaged when they hit the side of the station, and the split switch near Belmont. These units aren't going to be retired yet, are they?

What happened to 2631? My roster and BusHunter's still show it active on the Red Line. The only mismates we show are 2469-2504, 2531-2482, 2791-2856 and 3457-3458

You know, I still find it interesting that 3457-3458 consists of one car that was built by Morrison-Knudsen and the other by Budd. :lol:

That mismate was created way back in 1994 when only one of the 600 2600-series cars was wrecked (in this case, 3031). All 598 of the remaining 2600s were still active at the time, resulting in car 3457 being made by special order by Morrison-Knudsen specifically to mate to car 3032 (which was renumbered 3458 at that point).

3031 was, as we learned, wrecked in an accident at Wilson station some months before the switch of the South Side through routings in 1993.

That's what I was wondering. This could be one of those temporary mismates just waiting for repairs to be done on 2631 like cta has done in the past with 2659-3146,3109-3112, and 3003-3032.

On the main topic, CTA has a solicitation for scrapping rail cars, due 8/7. Cracking it open, the thing of interest to us is that it is for approximately 30 2200s and 70 2400s.

I don't recall a solicitation for the first approximately 110 2200s, but apparently the last 30 aren't under that contract.

Other point is that the pick up is at the Skokie Shops ramp.

As usual, the bid is plus or minus the American Metal Market Maximum for #1 Heavy Melt, and the purchaser agrees that they may only be used as scrap metal.

The September agenda indicates that this contract was awarded.

Some of the 2400's have Red Stripes for sand ?

Does that capability have to be transferred to some cars in the range 2601-3200 ?

The red striped ones were beefed up for work duty, like dragging around loaded flatcars.

So, either those are not among the 70 to be scrapped, or other cars would have to be beefed up to work car status, like the Santa train ones.My guess is that CTA won't be in a hurry to scrap those 2400s.

Since the solicitation number is different (previous one was 103638), it is not clear whether this is in addition to the prior 100. My guess is between the two, 155 2400s get scrapped.
