2400-series - Updates (Retired)

During January 2015 2435-36, 2441-42, 2459-60, 2525-26, 2547-48 removed from hold list, presumed scrapped.

I wonder why Graham Garfield hasn't updated his #2400's disposition list. My list has alot of presumed scrapped too. It would be nice to add some official dates of stuff.

​My memory is kind of fuzzy. I was on one of the first trains to O'Hare a #2600 and I didn't really recall seeing #2400's out there. I think for me it's a question of when they were transferred off the line. Was it before the O 'Hare opening, (9/3/84 was the opening date) or after the opening? There is actually a video of a 1947-48 era #5000 at O'Hare if you watch the 90 years of Chicago traction video, but he doesn't really show any #2400's either.

 

​Again, a case of fuzzy memory, but wasn't it posted that although the 2400s got their inaugural test on the Lake-Dan Ryan, deliveries were originally to the WNW? Of course, the O'Hare Extension wasn't built then.

A couple of notes on scrappings - as of 5/30/14 2400's have been removed by BL Duke Scrap in Summit IL, replacing Belson Steel Center in Bourbonnais (coincidentally, located almost exactly where Amtrak's City of New Orleans was wrecked some years back).

Some odd ones:

wrecked 3177 to Acme Refining 3/28/14 (only CTA car they have ever handled, and only 2600 scrapped in recent years)

2347-2348 to Rick Levin & Associates 4/10/14 - this is a real estate outfit. What did they do with these cars???

2320 to Paramount Pictures 6/17/13

2238 to Joe Cacciatore & Co 8/23/13 - another real estate outfit

2231-2232, 2275 to UNICOR-FPI (Federal Prison Industries) 1/27/12, also 2491-2492 10/23/13

​Actually, that's an auction outfit, although they usually auction real estate. That auction is archived here, and was the one when one of the cars went to Jungle Jim's.

  • a. prototypes #2401-#2404 ran in service on most lines for a 600 hour test (at least 2 months) before delivery began on the production cars.
  • b. On 8/3/79 a fire broke out at 61st shop, 6 cars inside the shop were destroyed. (#2517-18, #6367-68 and #6335-36) 3 cars outside the shop and next to it were also destroyed (#2481, #2447-48) Two more cars, #2479-80, were inside when the fire broke out and were saved by two signal personnel that had just completed the ATC. The shop was never rebuilt.
  • c. #2482 after the 8/79 fire became a training car at the federal training center and in the past has sporadically been paired with #2503. Currently the car has been paired with #2531 which occurred around the summer of 2002.
  • d. #2470 burned up 2/24/05 on the green line's 37th middle track, #2469 was paired with #2504 in the summer of 2006.

Dates are from CTA Materials Management as of 01/22/25.  CTA calls them "release dates" which apparently means the day the scrapper is given the ok to haul it away, as many times the observed removal date is a day or two later. However, this is what CTA has gone by since the 1950's, so this is the best info available in most cases.

Belson Steel Center is in Bourbonnais IL next to old GM&O (Where Amtrak's City of New Orleans hit the steel truck some years back), though most if not all actually went to subsidiary Chicago Heights Processing at 29th and State in Chicago Heights.

BL Duke is on Canal Bank Road east of Harlem in Forest View, between Santa Fe tracks and the Sanitary & Ship Canal

2507-08 are still at Skokie.  I just saw them this past Sunday parked along the fence closest to Oakton.

#2532 out of service from derailment in howard yard 8/26/2000 according to the retirement list. Still had the red and blue ends at skokie shops all this time.

I saw a picture of a damaged and unrehabbed 2600 with its original livery at Skokie Shops, but that's for another thread.

I passed by the "L" apartments on the "L" but I couldn't see the "L" they have on the roof. The building seems too high to see it. Too bad I guess. It would have been nice to see it from the "L". I hope they rustproofed it cause it will eventually rust in the rain.

From what was shown on Channel 7, they only used the shell of the car, which is stainless steel, and hence won't rust.
