Maybe someone is waking up and smelling the coffee. Orange line is a lighter demanding line on the 2600s. They might be repairing them to the point where they have an excess. What should have been done in the first place (not running 2600s on a 24/7 line exclusively,) is happening. You know on the weekend you barely see 3200s in rosemount yard. Why because they are in high demand. The 2600s are getting the rest they deserve. They are being fixed faster on the blue because they dont have hoards of cars needing repair. Plus they have extra downtime so they dont need to be repaired as much.  Its nuts. It's like having a new car in your garage and taking out the 20 year old car. Of course it will cost you more to run it and you will have the pains of interrupted service. Like I say things are so bad on the blue it has to be losing service. I bet service has came back with the 3200s but it will take a long time to regain the trust of riders left in the lurch. 

When did 3200s start seeing weekend service? Are they in midday weekday service yet?

Nice catch bro bring back memories when I use to ride them in the early 2000's when they was serving the green line

As it turned out, that did not actually happen. The mass retirement of 2400s began shortly after the last of the 2200s were retired.

As for the 2400s that remain on CTA property as part of its Heritage Fleet, three of them (2455-2456, 2489-2490 and 2537-2538) spent most of the 2000s on the Green Line (though 2537-2538 did get occasionally transferred to the Purple Line when that line needed more cars to fill its schedule). Which means that the singular pair of 2400s (other than the early work-motor-equipped units) that were on the Purple Line throughout the entire 2000s decade that is still extant (again, as part of the CTA Heritage Fleet) is 2543-2544.

Wait did the 2400's come in in 96 I tho8ght they came in in the late 70's early 80's if 5hey came in in 96 then what was the issue that they was retired so early

They came roughly between 1976 and 1979. I think the reference was just to on the Green Line, which reopened in 1996 after rebuilding.

Sorry I wasn't as clear as I wished. The 2400s were initially assigned to the Ravenswood, North-South (Englewood/Jackson Park-Howard) and West-Northwest (Congress/Douglas-Milwaukee) Routes when they were delivered in 1976-1979. By 1983, all of them were assigned to the West-South (Lake-Dan Ryan) route, where they remained until the swap of the South Side through routes in 1993. At that time all were reassigned to the Red Line, where they remained until the Green Line's reopening in 1996 when the majority of those cars went to that line (equipping that line entirely with those cars in the process). By 2000 the Red Line's remaining 2400s went to the Purple Line (although they remained primarily based at Howard Yard, where the Red, Purple and Yellow Lines all store their equipment). This remained the status quo until 2012 with the delivery of the 5000-series cars, when the Red Line received some of the Green Line ones (while the Green Line was re-equipped entirely with the newer Bombardier (now Alstom) cars). Others went to the Orange Line while some were retired at that time. By early 2014, the Red, Purple and Yellow Lines became entirely equipped with the 5000s, leaving the last of the 2400s running on the Orange Line until their final retirement.

Yea I get it now bro I remember riding them in high-school on Fridays when I use to leave school early to go downtown to see my girl after she got out of school until  like you said all of the 5000's came

Sun-Times story  that someone is selling 2400-series cars on anusbooK Marketplace.  CTA said it "uses an outside vendor to sell off decommissioned property like rail cars or other items" and the seller said "he got them at a training facility 'after the military used them for disaster training.'" They avoided the crusher, but caveat emptor.

I was riding the metra Rock Island line on Friday near the Robbins station and just happened to look out the window.  I spotted a scrap yard with a few 2400 series cars in it.  The train was not close enough to see any car numbers.  Even though it was in the scrap yard, it funny how many of those cars are still around in some form- the work motors, the heritage train cars, the cars in West Virginia, the car on top of that apartment complex, the IRM set and maybe a few in scrap yards.  There has to be close to 40 still in existence.

I know I recently saw a six car work train consist on the Blue Line.   The first two cars were 2400s and the last four were 2600s.   What was funny was the middle two cars were wrapped.

Actually we are less than 40 left cars, we have left are #2433-34,2455-56,2489-90,2491-92,2537-38,2541,2543-44,

One of the cars 2491 has reappeared in Miami of all places as a art installation.

Yea I have seen only 2600s as work motors now so I was wondering if they still had 2400 as work motors. Also I wonder why they kept 2401 and its mate. I wonder if they will use it for something or what.

So I saw something today about CTA having charter trains, and I think they use the 2400 series cars. So it’s possible that they kept 2401 and its mate for the charter train. Is that a possible reason why they kept 2401 and it’s mate?

2400s originally had the red, white, and blue end caps that turned up on the historic vehicles, along with the bands on the sides, but they were gel coated gray, presumably for maintenance reasons. chicago-l.org picture of 2401, original design

Those 2400s kept the red and blue end caps for quite a while even when the cars list their original livery .  I believe they list the colored end caps when CTA scrubbed the livery of the 2400s and the 2600s as a result of the rampant tagging if those cars, especially at Howard Yard.  Thus rhe fleet also looked a little more uniformed with the 2200s and 3200s. 

ALSO,  the 5000s were introduced with Blue end caps, bur only 5001 through 4010 had them.  They also disappeared after testing was completed
