  • Flxible(5300's): #49, #80
  • Flxible(6000's): #80, #152
  • New Flyer(5800's): #11, #22

I only remember 5862-5864 as the ones powered with a Cummins engine as I remember seeing them frequently on #11(maybe 5861 was assigned elsewhere out of NP). Doesn't mean I'm right...

Slight correction... Cummins group was 6305-6329.

You are right. I happened to be thinking of the first time I spotted one of the Cummins 6000s, of which 6308 was my first sighting on the #44 at State/Harrison when the 44 still went to Merchandise Mart and the downtown area via Cermak, State and Wacker north of Cermak/Archer, and my first ride simultaneously. So 6308 was stick in my mind.

And yes I think 5861 was a Cummins 5800 as well as I recall. I keep remembering that one rolling along the 145,146, 147 and 151 and having the shorter capped exhaust pipe like the other three. Unfortunately there seems to be very few pics of the Cummins 5800s before the rehabs online to double check the cutoff. And Bill V's page no longer mentions the cutoff as he does for the Cummins buses among the 5300s and 6000s.

And if you you need a third opinion on this, I say #5801-02, #5863-64 were the cummins buses. They were all delivered last.

I think sw and I would both disagree with you about 5801 and 5802, but somehow I keep remembering four among the 5800s while he only remembers three.

Saw them a lot on #11, and only remember the large tailpipe and Detroit Series-50 engine powering them. But, like I said to jajuan, I might not be 100% correct and am not ashamed to admit it...

That's just what I remember jajuan, based on the buses I saw on #11. I did see 5861 later when it had a large silver pipe and the Detroit Series-50 powered it.

Sorry for the late reply; been busy these past couple of days.

I remember the 800s were first split amongst 3 garages when they first arrived: Archer, Chicago, and Kedzie. First time I rode them was, as you mentioned, when Archer had them. As for the 900s, I rode them on the 62 when Archer closed and Kedzie took over that route. I always thought the 900s were at Kedzie and were never at another garage, so interesting tidbit you brought up.

I suppose this goes back WAY too far for specifics, but the I remember riding Pullman trolley buses on Irving Park in the late 50's, along with 1400 4507's on Addison and 1700 Twins on Kimball, even some 3600 Whites on Kedzie (82A). Lived at Grace and Central Park then. When we moved to Pulaski and Palmer, the usual suspects were Marmons on Pulaski and Armitage. Brill TB's on Fullerton and North Av, later 5000's on Armitage after the tracklesses came off. When I started wandering about, first time I went south of downtown got a 500 5502 on the 5-Jeffery. Other early stuff I remember were 500's on Archer, Marmons on 47th, Macks on 30-South Chicago. This is all a very, very long time ago...
