There's about 25 or so 6400s left and my theory about defunct artics seems to becoming more and more of a reality now because they're taking up space where old 6400s once sat, bike racks are removed and some seem to ventra card readers removed as well. #804 is officially retired after I got a good look of it inside and out. BusHunter
You guys were talking about #6847 being a heavy smoker. I thought that bus was retired. It seems to have an engine or emissions problem. By us they claim the longer the old buses run the less they smoke. But some are pretty bad. Was LMAO one day a guy was under the hood fixing his car and this one bus which is a heavy smoker belched out a ton of smoke and the guy disappeared in the smoke. I then seen him run in the house. Talk about a smoke out!! I followed the bus a little ways away and this Oak Lawn cop pulled behind it. I was like oh boy, I'd be surprised if he doesnt get pulled over but I think the cop didnt stop him. I turned down the adjacent block. I don't know how some buses make it through an emission check. You'll notice a lot of new faces back there mixed in with the old ones. 1

BusHunter
Wow, nice work. It's always interesting to look at these buses. Was trying to figure out what was the fishbowl next to #6227 used for? #4323 looks so new, it was when it got hit didn't see #6832 but that bus is probably held close to the vest. So many newer buses messed up in wrecks. Cool to see the frankenbus. Thought it was still in the CTA collection. And the Ballard #5900's are still there. 1.4 million a bus!! Most expensive CTA buses ever. The old #4900 fire bus and the 911 communications #4900. It's like a museum back there. What's your Flickr? I need to check it out. Thank you, If some of the buses the doors didn't have locks on them I could tell you the number on the fishbowl it still has a chicago garage sticker on it but I guess that'll remain a mystery as to what number it was after being shipped away, #6832 is still back there but getting a photo from the front was difficult due to the angle and lack of sunlight. #3091 has been in boneyard since its last know move via tow truck back in I want to say maybe 2012ish or beyond. Those #5900's have been through a lot along with those two remaing 500's back there, I'm shocked to still see them there after all these years. There's also MAN 4000 back there as well which was a former work bus that under the old rail yard at 63rd and Calumet. Also heres my flickr account is https://www.flickr.com/photos/160789544@N05/. FG got a few #6400's #6761, #6787, #6794 and they lost a few #1000's. #1225 went to 77th, #1169, #1183 went to Kedzie, #1055-58 went to 103rd, might be a few others. Some are off the tracker like #1262. It's going to be interesting if school does really go back in the fall. How will CTA decrowd a school run and how will this affect the fleet cause all garages are gonna need something. 22 people on a bus is a joke when your talking places like Lane Tech. Student body was 4300 when I went there.

Surprised you could go back there, but your a CTA employee so wth!!. Another perk of your employment. I get to see the wrecks by me. I have pictures I took of my yards wrecks. Incredible some of the damage up close, You would think people got hurt. We always have safety meetings like every month, where we discuss the accidents and how we can improve. You learn alot. You don't think of it but people get throwed around on these wrecks. One of ours had a little child get thrown and pinned under a seat, but it was a 45 mph t bone crash, but like I say never try to beat the offender always slow your bus and look for an escape because the slower collisions have less injuries and you look for the smallest object you can hit if it's unavoidable. People are not included of course, but like a street sign or some grass or even a ditch go for it!! I learned though I can jam on my brakes and use my full strength and my bus will stop on a dime, not with loads of people and large objects. I once took a music group downstate to compete in state finals and by the time you had there violins big huge violins, tubas and all that other stuff you could feel the bus was heavy, you really had to be careful on the highway, cause the weight pushes the bus. All you can do is increase your stopping distance and hope for the best.
