1000-series D40LF - Updates

BusHunter

Recommended Posts

The first of the #1000 series rehabs are on the street now. Just spotted #1165 in the loop on the #157. It has the led interior lights like the stimulus artics and the updated clever devices signs. The bus has been repainted but I can't tell if the headlights have been updated. I'll get some pictures if I can. The bus seems to have disappeared off the tracker. New Flyer rehabbed buses so far, dates spotted in service in parenthesis: (last updated 10/25/15 @ 10:44 PM)

The first of the #1000 series rehabs are on the street now. Just spotted #1165 in the loop on the #157. It has the led interior lights like the stimulus artics and the updated clever devices signs. The bus has been repainted but I can"t tell if the headlights hsve been updated. I'll get some pictures if I can. The bus seems to have disappeared off the tracker.

Please do, BusHunter!!! Outside of the lights and the updated Clever Devices signs, anything else appear different? Did they give it the seating that 1305-2029 have? Did they go with the seating that 4150-4207 have, or did they leave it the same seating that 1000-1304 have? Also does the engine sound different than before? The original engine for this bus was a Cummins ISM, so my guess is they just rebuilt this engine and installed it back into 1165.

The seats are the same as what was on it before, the buses are very similar to the pre rehab state. The only difference I could really see in the daylight was they put a different sign on the rear liftgate. But thebus is pretty fresh it has no exterior advertising. Looks like they did do some detailing on the inside though. My observations so far are from the outside.

Well 1165 is out of Kedzie, and is not the oldest of the fleet(1000-1002), so looks like they might be going garage by garage. If more blocks of Kedzie buses start showing up rehabbed, then this is how the CTA is doing the mid-life "gut" rehabs of the 1000-Series New Flyer D40LF buses.

I'm not surprised they didn't go with seating like that of 4150-4207 as longitudinal seating arrangements throughout the entire length of CTA vehicles is just downright unpopular with riders from what we learned when the 5000 series railcars started getting delivered. That was one of the top complaints from people.

Well, as far as 4150-4207 is concerned that was more due to CTA being stuck in a rough spot with no choice but to take tht seating design (and arrangement). Someone in another thread (4300's thread?) Mentioned that those were the only seats available when CTA placed the order.... And there were 226 reasons for CTA not to wait for there regular seats to come in

We have 1018 and 1252 at 103rd.

Yeah I was going to mention that but I couldn't remember if they were stuck with that design/arrangement because of it in part being that CTA piggybacked all the 4000s as a whole from a larger order originally from Seattle's King County Metro and that was the specs on the later ones or if it was just that was the only thing available period when CTA had to make that later option order because of the NABIs getting pulled.

Those 58 buses were a separate deal based on an ARRA grant for 58 buses (plus the Dearborn subway and Chinatown station).

I'm sure the debate about seats is that CTA once claimed that they were going to replace the 17 inch seats used in buses from 1990 to 2006 with the 18-1/2 inch seats used in subsequent New Flyers. I doubt that a new arrangement would be used, unless CTA was going to replace the floors (which now have bolt holes).

As well as 1531, 1534, 1254, 1539, 1257, 1040, & 1005 just to name a few at at 103rd. I actually drove 1005, 1040,&1531and they are smoother than the 1800's big difference.

Thanks. Apparently from that spread, the overhaul isn't in any particular order, in that one would think that they would do the base order (under 1255?) first.

The question to you is whether the last two options (1620 and above) drove any differently than those under, prior to the unders being rehabbed?

I'm surprised there doing #1500's already. All those buses have been rehabbed other than getting the new clever devices? Some of the ones I've seen with the new clever devices like #1232 and #1202 don't appear to be rehabbed. I guess I need a second look at those, now you have me wondering.

Yeah I was wondering about those and also doing a closer look at 1000s at NP that I've noticed having the new Clever Device terminals while the buses in question showing no signs of a rehab done.

It also shows that the rehabs are apparently occurring for multiple garages.

I don't know, hopefully those buses are not rehabbed yet or this is a partial rehab. I was on #1091 which has the new clever devices and the updated rear liftgate sign but other than that no changes. #1165 seem to have the most changes that bus was definitely rehabbed. #1005 which I rode yesterday has the cummins engine in it but so far appears to be the only one like that. It did not have LED interior lights or looked like it was rehabbed other than the engine and headlights so your guess is as good as mine.

I can't believe it's time for the rehabs to start. I remember when I took a trip to CTA HQ when 1000 went from the PR event at Navy Pier to there. All the suits got to take a look and hear a useless sales pitch. The drivers and I looked it over once they left and they had more than a few things to say. They did like the new driver seat though! :) I got to ride it back to the Chicago garage with the supervisor and mechanic. They did some unofficial speed tests and we were all surprised at how much zip it had. Good times back when I was young. :)

What do the new external signs look like? I haven't been outside for a couple months due to another spine fusion. I'm going nuts not being able to ride the bus or train. I hear the toots from the Ravenswood trains at night and it drives me crazy!

Which Cummins engine was in 1005, and 1165 for that matter? A newer one that's up to date with the most recent EPA standards? All of them have some form of Cummins engine dependent upon which option block the individual bus is from to begin with but the one of the questions with the rehabs was if the rehabs would bring about some change to the Cummins engines initially installed in them.

Last night, I seen #909 parked at 77th with no bike rack. Are the 800s/ 900s getting rehab too? Or what's the deal?

They weren't on the count of 1029 in the specs., and there were only 2 specs, not a separate one for the hybrids.

Maybe a bike rack is missing.

The rehabs appear to be going on a garage level and as mentioned by Busjack the hybrids are not part of the rehabs. Plus don't forget that the South Shops heavy maintenance facility is at 77th so this was likely some other maintenance work being done with those two NF buses.

According to the 2014 budget, the rehab buses are supposed to get topodyn, which is an intelligent gear shifting program for transmissions. CTA has used such a transmission in #1930 - #2029. I don't know if this means they will have the digital transmission shifting light on the dash for the transmission, but it sounds like a possibility.
