In the case of 4000-4149, if CTA paid off the lease. Similar with regard to 1630-2029, as neither order involved federal money. 4150 up did involve federal money.

If you mean scrapping buses that are already beyond repair that are more than 12 years old,  I can't argue with that.   Outside of that,  I wouldn't start scrapping buses until their replacements were running in service

WMATA didn’t scrap their Orion Vs right away for this exact reason, they ended up needing to reactivate some of them to shore up gaps in service. Their replacements just started getting delivered last year

At this point, I'm assuming only wrecks are being discussed in this topic. I don't know what the CTA spare ratio is since it had to put more artics on the street because of COVID.

Other than the 6000s (a deliberate downsizing), CTA has tended to retire buses more slowly than when their replacements arrive. Of course, since the CMAQ grant for the electric buses was conditioned on removing dirty buses from its fleet, the 2002 Novas will be retired only when the electric buses (indirectly) replace them.

Never a good thing about it bus catching fire. I can't tell much from the ouxs to figure out what caused the fire,  but got brakes usually is the cause.  Modern vyses are usually equipped with fire suppression systems but I do know if these Novas have them  Another possibility is some sort of fuel line leak

Either it’s that or a fuel line link issues, I did hear about a few #7900s with brake problems so that could probably be what #8144 suffered or it could of been a fuel line leak which played a role behind this.

That rear exhaust is the possible culprit, they overheat so much and oil gets caked up in the exhaust system to a point like sludge and when you add extreme heat you'll get a situation like this.

Is this the first fire involving a 7900 series Nova?  Wasn't there a fire last year with a 6400 series Nova that temporarily caused all the remaining active 6400s to be pulled from service?  What caused that fire?

That is SO sad, I saw 8144 on the Brown Line Shuttle last month. I did not even think that bus would catch on fire like that. Photos below were taken on January 23, 2021. A very unfortunate loss, but hopefully this bus can be fixed and return to service.

Most likely that bus is another #1305, which it’ll most likely to end up getting retired early even it is almost 7 years in through its service life. If CTA doesn’t plan on rehabbing the #7900’s, #8144 won’t see service again and will soon become a parts bus and duct tape is all you will have to keep them from falling apart.

There's been several fires since #6860 on both series of 1000s and 7900s in the past year or so but none have resulted into what took place with #8144. #6860s fire was due to an electrical defect of some kind.

Yes I was amazed to see this unless everything got fried cta will fix it just like they did 8194 a few years back if not it will retire

8194 had a fire a few years back idk how back it wasnt couldnt be that back they fixed it & put it back in service

Here’s the funny part tho my question is are we going through this once every year? #1993 caught fire in 2019, #1703 and #1757 in 2020, #6860 in 2021 and in the beginning of 2022 with #8144 the first 7900-series LFS to catch fire???? ????
