And the next garage to get New Flyers is...

While waiting at the Halsted Orange Line stop seeing if the Hybrid bus was going to show up on the 8 ( it didn't during the two hours I waited :( ), Bus 1735 pulled into the station but not into either the 44's or 8's stops. I guess the operator needed a bathroom break, and then left the station heading east on Archer. The bus did have a "6" run number so it was assigned to 74th. I guess they were testing it out

I wonder if it's safe to assume that 74th has 1731-1735?

Considering 1741 was the highest sighted so far, it more safe to assume 74th has at least up to 1741.

All I have to say about this is that I am personally not thrilled that 74th is getting the New Flyers. What they should've done was to continue the deliveries at either North Park, 77th & 103rd. I was really hoping the Glen to get it. I was really happy several months ago when they got rid of all the TMCs at 74th and I really hoped that it would stay as an all-6000s bus garage. Many of those buses are still in good shape. And I don't care if they're 13 years old and they're still old equipment. CTA still haven't complied with their bus standards (retirement @ 12, rehab at 6) and I have a feeling they will do the same with the all the new New Flyer Buses. The Flx-6000s is still my favorite buses on the Current CTA roster. It will be sad when those old Flx-6000 get moved or retired. :(

I share your thoughts, it is very possible that CTA could speed up the retirement of the 6000s. When that time comes it will be just as sad as the TMCs are being retired. I love the 6000s, theyre really impressive not only to watch but to drive as well. I very much enjoyed being behind the wheel of them, they never got me bored of driving one. I am one busfan who will certainly miss them when theyre gone.

This is one area where I have to disagree with both of you. I'm just as much a busfan as those of you who wanted to see FG next to get 1731-????. However, quality of service takes precedence over what some or all of us may wish to see as busfans. Why should one segment of the city continue to have to be subjected to constant aging equipment because of someone wants to continue to see that equipment on the street indefinitely. A lot of the 6000s do operate really well, and I don't dispute that. But the chances of breakdowns is a heck of a lot higher with all equipment 13 years or older than when there is a mix in bus models, and that reality has to be faced. My all time favorite bus model is the MAN Americana, but I accept the fact that it couldn't stay on the road forever. Even I have to admit these were really old buses at 18-19 years of age at retirement. They weren't air-conditioned, nor were they ADA compliant which CTA was ultimately required to become in its bus service. So sadly they had to go even though plenty of them still ran well throughout their service lives. In my opinion, plenty of them ran much better than the TMCs and 5300s they shared garage space with.

There's also the sociopolitical aspect of it as well. Though 74th's service radius is financially diverse, there are large sections that are historically economically depressed where some of those residents already feel neglected in general because of their lower economic status. So what message does that send to these people to pass over their area for new equipment for 13 years, but instead constantly place other garages' old hand me downs there instead when those garages got new equipment when they didn't necessary need it? I definitely not saying either of you agrees with that implied message, but don't let our enthusiasm as busfans supercede the equity in the quality of service for everyone in the city.

Why? Its about time 74th recieves something new. Couldn't you just let your grudge go about them getting new buses for once? I know you'd like to see them on #85 Central or whatever route but really this is 74th's time for some new buses and they really deserve them.

Agreed. I am getting sick and tired of people saying things like "oh, 74th needs to be stuck with broken down buses for my reasons". Its not what we want as busfans. Why couldn't we just put our enthusiasm aside for just a minute and congrate 74th for finally recieving something new? There's no excuse whatsoever why they shouldn't recieve any new buses. I don't care if you think people in those areas will mess them up or something because of some belief you hold about the area 74th serves. And personally, FG shouldn't be getting anything new until at least until 2011 or 2012 because that's really unfair that they keep getting new equipment.

EDIT: Just to throw my opinion out here, but quite frankly, as a busfan, don't any of you think routes would get more duller if FG had New Flyers? I for one think so. Its bad enough Chicago only has New Flyers (I liked when the Novas were there with them).

Probably, to tamp down this fire...

As I previously noted, by my estimates, there probably will be only 100 high floors left after the D40LF and DE60LF deliveries are finished, within another 12 months.

And, at that point, no doubt Huberman will find the funds through some grant or lease to get 100 hybrids of some variety.

Hence, the point that a neighborhood should get no new buses should become irrelevant.

It would be nice if Fg got some NF's. NF's have been around at CTA since 1995, but FG still has never even had a hint of them on any of their routes. The other day I saw a NF on the #152 from NP.(#1597) It was a refreshing site to see something new on a FG route even though it was from somewhere else. It seems like Fg is the nova capital and that's where they'll be until they retire. As far as what you said about FG not getting anything until 2011, that's optimistic. They have been passed over time and time again, where other garages almost receive a new fleet on every order. (77th comes to mind) Fg will be lucky if they get anything. FG hasn't received anything in 6 years except for a couple Optima's (Oh Goody!!) What I'd really wish could happen was that both Chicago and FG would split the Novas and NF's 50/50 so there would be a better balance. As far as 74th, they should get NF's first. Alot of their buses are old and stuff just doesn't work anymore like the AC. What would really be good is give 74th some NF's maybe 80 and shift all of FG's Novas to 74th, giving them a completely low floor fleet. Then give Fg some new NF's to split 50/50 with all the #6000's that would be left. That sounds pretty fair. Whoever ends up with the #6000's should have NF's along side them.

Please pardon me if this has been answered but does the CTA use a central check in point for new bus deliveries or are new buses delivered to their assigned garage?

They used to go through South Shops (on the 77th side west of Perry), which was the consistent pattern through the delivery of the NABIs (Google Maps satellite view supports that, and points out the location). However, given the speed the NFs are now seen on the street, I would now tend to doubt that. Again, an insider would probably have better information.

In any event, it isn't like Pace keeping a bus in South Holland for several months.

Again, if you read my prior point, it probably will get some within the year.

In fact, if I put on my prognoticator's cap, my betting at the moment as that as old Novas go through rehab, FG will get them, and NFs for the rest. Maybe that's the explanation for 6470s-6480s all the sudden showing up there.

It is very sad for 6000s because they are the last high floor buses left for CTA, after the complete of their retirement, might as well go ride the Pace with 2380s (1996)Nova Classics which are my favorite for Pace since 2290s Orion 1s are now in progress retiring also. Its pretty amazing that New Jersey Transit are the only in U.S. sticking with the 100% high floor fleet for now with my Nova RTSs and new NABI 416s, but sadly their 1988-1994 model Flxible Metros are retiring in progress too.

It would've been better if CTA retires all 5800s first, then 6000s, even I really like 5800s better than 1000s. I really dont want our 6305s with Cummins to leave, those are my favorite, too bad they've never been rehab or repainted. :(

Hey Everyone. It seem FG Novas are going to 77th. I have seen 6869-6883 on various routes out of 77th

Yesterday, I've spotted #6871 on Cottage Grove northbound at 51st working Route 4, while I was enjoying riding my TMC #4659 on Route 15.

Sounds good to me, I have a weird feeling anyway more #6400's from 77th will be showing up soon. But they are the most beat up of the #6400's. Anyway I would really like to see some NF's at FG. Time is running out ( only 200 plus left after 74th) and I don't see any BRT #600's heading that way anytime soon.

For what it is worth, they have not been replacing garage stickers on those 6400's at FG. Most of what I have seen along Peterson still have 7 stickers in the winshield. Silly and unnecesary movements continue to baffle !!!!!

It's safe to assume more than that. There were quite a few NF's on 74th routes yesterday. #1741 and #1735 were on the #44, with the freshly rehabbed #6057 between them. #1733 was on the #52A also #1740 and #1739 were on the X55. There was also a NF on the #48 but I couldn't get the number. I was sort of shocked I'd see so many this early. I guess 74th really likes the new equipment and is putting as many miles as they can on them. :)

There was also a NF operating on Ashland yesterday afternoon. I couldn't get the number or whether it was working the 9 or X9 because I was a block away from Ashland when I spotted it. I could only see that it did have passengers aboard.
