6400-series Nova LFS - Updates & Retirements

Over here in the 3rd yard at fg, #6811 has it's bike rack removed. #6831 is still here probably done.  #6867 is here and more of the buses are being cannibalised. Alot of them have their access doors pulled open. Most of what was here before is still here. #6536, #6603, #6784 is back. Looks like a mass feeding ala the walking dead. Both #8197 and #8199 are mia from the 3rd yard. First time I've seen that since they've been here.

Alright folks, I have #6458 #6634 and #6880 are pending retirement while an interesting sign on #6458's windshield stating as of 03/31/16, "*Not Serviceable Right Front Axle BAD*".

This is more intended for #6458, but #6686 may be also in the same boat, depending on what is wrong with the motor.....

The other two are older retirees but #6458 is interesting because that's newer and still on my roster. I did a check this morning to see what's not running and it's 61 #6400 buses. I need to add #6729 to the roster as that bus has returned. This is the list of the 61 we need to look for

It certainly does help. I haven't been tracking the #6400's lately especially when #8198 went on a 45 day delivery from south shops and the delays in putting the #8200's in service of about 40-45 days also. I figured if nothing new was coming in nothing was going out or very little. Now that the glen has 10 buses appearing in a week they should start to massively retire. They look like within 3 weeks they'll have 20 buses at the glen, so their probably eyeballing what they want to get rid of. I know #6784 has been in the 3rd yard 2 or 3 times since I've been looking, but #6729 came out of the 3rd yard. It was in my #8199 at the 3rd yard pics. I thought maybe that was one with no plates but maybe I'm wrong.

@BusHunter You can cross out #6675 and #6811 because they're at the shop and #6811 has no bike rack. #6675 has been on a garage hold since 06/02.

I rode #6843 this morning and it had lighting problems onboard, like it keeps flickering each time the bus hits a bump or while it's turning.

Took a look at FG tonight. All those buses I took pictures of in the 3rd yard on Sunday are already gone like #6828, #6451 damn that was fast. The yard looks normal, it's not crowded. A few new buses have joined the 3rd yard #6575, #6581 and #6686. All those number sequences are probably in danger of retirement but you never know FG might retire all #6800's. I saw truck #270 pulling in #6696 on the hook with it's little strobe lights flickering away.

Took at look at the 3rd yard this afternoon. Not much different but there's a few new things. #6771's there with it's access panel raised on the bottom rear right side, #6808's beside it in the exact same condition. They got #6554 in the unlucky spot where #6828 was. Don't know if that's where retirements go or not. Did they finally get tired of it's dead sign. I swear they fixed it but it was dead again the other day on the #77. The buses I mentioned on Thursday in the post before are gone. It looks like #6591 might finally be gone. The yard wasn't crowded to my surprise as they got 15 new buses this week you would figure they would be bumper to bumper in the 3rd yard, but maybe some drove down to SS a few nights.

A lot of 2nd Gen Novas from CTA's 2000-2002 order going out now. This might throw a monkey wrench into plans of keeping any for spares until those All-Electric buses are ordered and delivered. They don't seem to be holding together.... two 1st Gen Novas vs. seventeen 2nd Gen Novas being put out to pasture as of 6/21/16.

I think we need to keep it in perspective that it wouldn't be a surprise that a good number of 6400-series buses numbered in the 6800s would see retirement sooner than some lower numbered ones because 77th did have a good number of them starting somewhere near the point that the 1000s were a couple of years into their service and therefore put significantly more mileage on them than they might have gotten had they remained at FG. FG in turn had lower numbered Novas that were originally at 77th, leaving these to not be run as hard as their younger 6800s range counterparts that were swapped to 77th. FG didn't get those higher numbered buses back until the big 77th 6400s series purge.

As was shown when the 4400s, 5300s, and 5800s were retired, it isn't fleet number that counts but that a dead bus (or one with service history problems) is a dead bus.

True. With the 4400s for example, the last ones in service by the time that they got to a small handful were pretty much in the 4700s range if memory serves.

Damn that is alot of #6800's gone. (half are #6800's) These #6400's from 77th are making those #6800's look bad. It may not be really that the #6800's are shot, i think it's CTA's way of equalizing the fleet. If you look at the #6400's, #6500's and #6600's, Fg has between 20-25 of each series of bus. Now here comes the #6700's and #6800's with well over 25 buses a piece. i guess they are trying to just keep things equalized, but i question the decision to keep buses with higher miles versus ones with lower. Some of the oldest buses are still around, how much more can they take before they implode.

It's cool I have pictures and have seen some of these buses in the 3rd yard before they go bye bye. The #6828 spot which became the #6575 spot which is now the #6558 spot may lead one to believe it's gone. I know #6798 now has been in the 3rd yard for 2 weeks and buses are dying all around it. (#6796, #6797) #6567 has been in the 3rd yard for months like it's being cannibalized, yet it's still on the active list go figure. I guess we have to assume half of what goes to the 3rd yard now is gone. I was shocked the other day when here comes #6771, pulling out on the #152 and it was in the 3rd yard. So it is really hit or miss.

Which also brings up the thought (although I have not consulted the rosters) that with maybe 1/3 of the fleet gone, a one week snapshot doesn't prove much.

But as I said, it is service  history. Maybe the ones originally at A and C were not beat up as much.

I just hope when we get to a slowdown in deliveries like at #8250, CTA won't be regretting keeping the oldest buses, the #6470's are among the oldest. Hopefully also when we get to the final 30-60 #6400 buses, we won't have any base order buses left cause that's a tall order even on rush hour only service to keep them running another 12-24 months after spring 2017.

#6778, #6826, #6801 and #6699 are new to the 3rd yard over here at the glen. No new #8200's that I could see.

#6831 was having problems last week at Gale/Milwaukee. it was sitting with a supervisor. I don't know it was out 3 months and it still has problems. The engine was running, could have brake issues or operator issues. For it's sake hopefully it wasn't the bus or it's destiny might be the junk yard at SS.

I walked the glen this evening and discovered #6550 in the 3rd yard with it's lower hatch/access panel wide open. Looks like an early harvest. #6477 and #6678 were also in the 3rd yard.

Looking at the new novas, they seem to park them mostly in front of the transportation building, they must be keeping an eye on them in case they should drive off or something bad happens to them. It's like a real mother's hen over there. One chick/bus did slip away though as I saw #8225 on the Elston fence. i doubt it stays there all weekend.

I had a first today. #6865 picked me up and smelled like a skunk inside the front door. I wonder if a skunk went inside got scared and let one go. Being that they are close to the Forest you never know what might crawl in a bus at 3AM. They don't always close the doors real tight. I know out by me in Schiller woods there is all kinds of wildlife. Stuff you don't see in the city.

i was thinking about bottling up some of that smell and sending it to Garmon as a free sample of my new cologne Eau de Skunke, so he could get unrestricted access of South Shops!!
