Is there something going on today for #4076, #4113, and #4138 being on #70 right now??? #1721 still remains @ Chicago. Currently on #72. #1994 is on #74 just to clarify that 77th 1900s ends @ #1993. #1377's been at Chicago all week. Artics have been in odd places at Chicago garage all week. Some were on the #74, but I never heard of any on the #70 just one or two school trips. #1994, after Andre posted it was there, I found out was there. Hopefully it's fixed from it's earlier problem. jajuan Posted September 14, 2014 Report Share Posted September 14, 2014 Now that's interesting I saw a old nova parked at 103rd today 1932 probably along with that nova are just loaners obviously but 1932 just may be more given that 103rd gave a few of our 1400's to 77th so in return 77tth may have gave some of their 40fters with the increase of they're 7900's as of today. You know at first glance, this bus reminds me of that #4900 they had long ago that was a mobile command bus. I asked a supervisor if that was the same bus but they didn't know. Now I forget did that bus have an air conditioning unit installed? (regular #4900's did not) If not that would make this a #4400. I have the license plate number if that helps. TI-2 was there too. That bus is a classroom bus. The doors were padlocked, I talked to a man who I asked if he knew the original bus number of TI-2. He said it was a former #6000 that was one of the unpainted mechanic's buses that the manufacturers send over and that bus had never been in service. I knew that was wrong but maybe he's not a bus buff. He explained to me that bus which has alot of computers and office equipment in it is used to help generate scores for the rodeo. And then he asked if I wanted to see the bus. I almost fell over!! I asked if I could take some pictures and he said it was all right so I snapped away but I noticed a few things. The destination signs on the inside were the smaller ones like what's on #5300, ##5301, #5303 - #5544. This doesn't make sense with the Alcoa rims. It's like a frankenbus!! LOL!! It looks like it did have a farebox at one time too. It has an operators garbage sack so why does it have that if it's not so? Well here are the pictures of the inside of TI-2 I also got the license plate of TI-2. I read the front and then i read the rear. i swear it's two different numbers. I wanted to check that out but it was time to go. The real questions are whether it had the flush route number sign on the back or the one that stuck outside the bus, and if you can tell any difference between a Model D and E. The 3 and 15 character flip destination sign lead me to a 5300 because those were replaced on the 6000s with the LED ones. However, the body being that white would lead me to the manufacturer's sample theory, as would that most of the in service Flxs had considerable rust near the end. At least the generator is explained by the need to have more dependable power to run all the computers. I hope they have sufficient surge protection. But more importantly look at the front beam that wheelchair passengers sometimes used to help pull themselves into the bus off the lift. It's black like what was seen on the 5300s while on the 6000s that beam and the handrails on either side of the lift itself were yellow as I recall. I can't tell from your post or the picture if you are making an assertion about TI-1. The one thing that hit me riding a 4900 (on 171) was that the seating arrangement was the same as on other RTSs I rode in other cities, as opposed to the 4400 setup with the wheelchair positions, but, most notably the single seats.I'm not sure what motivated CTA to cut the number of seats in 1990, but go back to a more traditional number in 1995 on the 6000s. Oh there's no dispute, the evidence points to it being a #5300 just look at the split vents on the rear interior, #6000's were all one piece. My Frankenbus comment is about the Alcoa rims. Someone put those on that bus. Now whether it's an in service bus or not, why would it show wear around the farebox location? or have an operator garbage? I did talk to a bus fan/ex operator from the period and they stated they knew the bus number but it was written down in their papers somewhere, so if so would a mechanics bus have a number? Mel Bernero had posted here that the white buses were at 89th (according to him, the present location of the training center). TI-2 is in one of the pictures, with an M82 license plate, indicating that it is a 1991 bus (as opposed to the 1995 buses, which had M05 license plates). The #5382 pictures plate is M81003 not M81033. The #5705 theory holds water until you look at the destination signs which were not of that type. TI-2 appears repainted, I looked at it and tried to see if maybe I could pick up a number through the paint to no avail. I know the CTA symbols were changed because the oldest bus with that symbol would be the #6000's and this one has a special black one. (Ti-1 pictures I suspect is in the link) See anything familiar? So the bus was repainted and a set of alloy wheels were put on it. Notice the missing rear license plate. It probably fell off or got lost and some one put a plate off of #5705 on it. Further investigations of my own on the command bus yielded that the bus for that was #4905. Guest Posted September 16, 2014 Report Share Posted September 16, 2014 I only seen one or two of these Cummins L-10 series buses, and none of them had the cover. I was guessing it was a Flxible thing at the time as these buses were built on the same body as the rest of the 5300-series Flxibles, only difference being Alcoa rims and engines. The 6000's which came four years later had the exhaust caps installed(I don't know if it was something post-1991 or just a little $5-10 part the CTA didn't want on the 5300's at the time). But, seeing only one or two and both without the caps(and only 20 in the group), one would guess they were all alike. Not doubting your word, just going with my eyes on this one... As far as another 5700 outside of the Cummins versions having the Alcoas, I wouldn't dismiss it. 6032 had steel wheels like the 5300's did for a bit. In regards to the steel wheels on the 95 model Flxs, I seem to recall that Flx #6063 also had the steel painted dark gray wheels when it was assigned at FG. I remember driving it.
