Well I guess the CTA has to register the bus with the Illinois DMV(and anyone who's had to get anything through the DMV should know how long that takes). I'm sure the CTA can't even apply for plates for the buses until they are on property and they submit copies of the papers with the bus info, VIN, etc... to them. And several days(or in this case, weeks) later, the state will mail out the plates to the CTA main office at 567 W. Lake St. and they'll have a courier no doubt bring them to South Shops(why ship from Lake St. to South Shops when you can just have someone drive them over... saves parcel cost) and they'll put the plates on the buses and then they'll begin their time on Chicago's streets in revenue service.

I'm pretty sure that's not the case. If nothing else, every car dealer has access to temporary plates, so it is hard to believe that CTA doesn't. I don't know if it was legal, but Pace ran the 6900s without plates for a while, instead had marker pen notations that the plate number was M126900 or whatever. There are also Secretary of State facilities at 99th and King Dr. and 100 W. Randolph, although maybe they don't have M plates.

The real issue probably is that CTA has to install all the Clever Devices, Ventra, and farebox equipment, which first requires salvaging it from somewhere else.

Quite a few years ago, The Omnibus Society of America had a bus charter using bus 3407, the White. We were stopped by the Evanston Police because when they ran the plate, one of the officers was a rookie being trained, it showed up as being registered to a Flxible. I do not know how common it was, or still is, to have the license plate not match the bus it is assigned to on the registraton.

You didn't see my shots of the Novas in the 7960s???

Where did you think I heard about them? :P Your south shops shots are invaluable. Your rep status needs to be way higher than it is as a major contributor to this site. If we all work together, and not against each other we can accomplish great things!! :)

Considering that CTA keeps plates on buses until they are ready to fall off (they no longer being replaced on a annual basis), I would guess what you describe would happen today only after someone else got their hands on the bus.

Also, with plates now coming up fairly uniformly M19XXXX, I don't think CTA is taking plates from old buses to put on new ones.

7955 is released on #3 King Drive right now.

It's now since pulled into the garage apparently. But 7924, 7925 and 7934 are now still out on the 3 though.

Saw 7983 along with a gang of more new novas a few mins ago at 77th

The consensus drawn from the comments is that 7955 is on parole and may have to return to the lockup with its gang member buddies if it doesn't play nice. :oB)

I'll help you on this one, Mr.cta85. Save the picture to a file on your computer, open your picture in Paint and rotate it, save it again and then upload the corrected image to the forum. I put your copyright to it because I adjusted it for you. :)

Shots of #7914 and #7960. Also, I took a shot of #7963 because Clever Device Inc. (as shown on the SUV) are out here along with Prevost Mobile are programming the buses at this time being.

#7914 being inspected by a South Shop employee (for Clever Device) and Prevost Mobile:

Interesting that Clever Devices is out here. Also, the 8/30/2014 is undoubtedly a flip from CTA PROGRAM, and reinforces what I said before about programming the signs, since that was the date of the last pick/new schedules. Last time I saw that kind of display was on a 5800.

Yeah tell me about it! Don't get me wrong, I was totally fooled when I thought that the display indicated that they were programmed on that exact date.
