I'm going to remove #8340 from the active roster, just got word of it having a fire that completely gutted the bus almost. The bus is already in the boneyard at SS sitting a few rows over from #8144.

I guess ir does as long as the fire is contained.   Once those fires get exposed to air, the fire spreads very quickly.   I once remember an engine fire that only spread after the engine compartment was opened.  Once that happened,  the fire burned the bus to the frame.

They do but depending on the intensity of the fire along with the condition of the bus at the time, it can only do so much to contain it let alone put it out quickly before it spreads. One thing that has always been troubling about the 4th generation LFS and let alone Nova LFS in general is it inability to keep the exhaust temperatures from overheating. Whether it's the rear window/no rear window version CTA currently has, The buses seem to be prone to overheating from the exhaust area more so than the New Flyers. Over the years I've had countless 7900s with overheating exhaust indicator lights going off on the dashboard in all 4 seasons I might add and I've always been baffled by it, then there was I video I posted years ago of #7913 with heavy black smoke just pouring out of the rear exhaust with a high exhaust warning light on the dashboard going off. Now one could argue it may be a Maintenance issue while another could argue it's a Nova issue.

One would think the manufacturers would do better, considering that a modern bus is mostly made of composites.

In some aspects they have, I honestly think it's a combination of manufacturers having to cut corners to adjust to the changing standards put in place the by EPA. It has really hurt the quality of equipment getting produced these days. It's ironic that a 2nd gen D40LF, 2nd Gen LFS, Flxible Metro B and E from the past were never really prone to fires at such young age like the 7900s are currently.

That’s the thing the new nova’s especially the 7900s is just garbage. The 6400s held up very well during the 20+ years they’ve served from CTA.

With the roll out of the New Farebox starting later on this year I think we all can agree that whatever #1000s and #4000s don't receive it won't be slated for retirement but will be on the radar for sure. #1301 and #8411 have them so far.

With the Spring pick around the corner the rosters are due for another shift and since late Dec there was a slight shift and return of elderly #1000s from 103rd popping up at C and NP. Meanwhile Option 3/4 #1000s are slowly getting sidelined from C,K and NP for various reasons. I've taken them off the active roster until further notice but more than likely they're pretty much LTH/Borderline retired.

I guess 103rd & 74th have an equal number of Nova Smart LFSs while Chicago takes the cake for the most of them, still leaving North Park at the bottom with 0 Novas.

In other words Chicago has a total of 141 Nova Smart LFSs, 103rd & 74th each have 123, Forest Glen has 117, 77th has 111, & Kedzie has 107, while North Park still has none.
