briman94
Are we really talking about drones rooming around 'L' yards to find out LED assignments? Sometimes viewing history in the traditional sense is better that being hi-tech. Hey, using new technology to find new technology...guess it's worth a thought

Sometimes viewing history in the traditional sense is better that being hi-tech. I was just joking, There are better ways to find out in totality what is going on and alot cheaper. Sometimes low tech rules, at least that what they say in "Mercury Rising". And a few CTA friends couldn't hurt. Busjack
Tents are on sale at Walmart. Didn't know they have 3 room tents and 12 person tents. Busjack
If your really high tech, you could always fly a drone over Kimball yard, but you might have to put Busjack on retainer. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1083449-REG/parrot_pf721802_ar_drone_2_0_quadcopter_elite.htmlIf you get in trouble with Homeland Security, you are on your own. chicagopcclcar
Perhaps the suspension on the Yellow line can make for some strange bedfellows. Anyway, there is an eight car set of 3200s with "not in service" sitting in the Red line 98th St. yard, Saturday, June 13. Since many of you got get way south, here is a report. Video at 10, LOL. briman94
Either I'm blind/going insane, or there is a car with side LEDs and front rollsigns. I think it was 3427-28 and I was watching it approach, and didn't notice LED signs, but then as it passed me, there were LED signs on the side... Brandon93
This question is for rail operators that operate 3200's. Since the 3200's are getting rehabbed how do the LED signs work and how do they change to go from saying Loop to either Midway or Kimball? Is there a login system on there similar to the 5000's? Since the 3200's are getting rehabbed how do the LED signs work and how do they change to go from saying Loop to either Midway or Kimball? Is there a login system on there similar to the 5000's?The spec says that they have to be compatible with the two knobs already on the dashboard and the existing train wires; the only difference being that there is one controller for the signs that determines with one of three sets of 15 signs, corresponding to the old three rolls, is to be used. Thus, once the controller is set for one set of 15 signs, it shouldn't be any different from what they have been using since about 1964.The train wire spec is also consistent with that during the test period, it wasn't reported that they were running any 8 car trains with only electronic signs, so the new system had to interface with the old one.

Is there a login system on there similar to the 5000's?In a technical sense, the old signs probably had a power connection and a 4-bit (5 wire) signal telling them which sign to show. The new signs are just a drop-in replacement for that, and a laptop is used to configure which "set" of signs they display. They likely have every sign the 5000s do, but they have to know which signal means which sign to be compatible with the rollsigns.

That makes 15 signs per set, but the sign units themselves still need to know which switch position corresponds to which sign, so either they only hold 15 at once or they have a way of configuring which "roller curtain" set the sign mimics. chicagopcclcar
Three photos were taken Sunday, June 14, 2015, of a set of 3200s in the Red line 98th St. Yard in the median of Interstate 94. I don't know how long these cars have been in this yard. I guess they developed some of trouble during the last Brown line reroute through the State St. subway and it was felt it would be better yarding them at 98th St. rather than sending them back to Kimball Terminal. DHOr with Skokie Shops inaccessible to Brown and Orange Line trains until further notice, maybe the 3200's are being shipped to the 98th St. Yard for the LED signage and rehabs right now. Learned on the internet....."They had to lay up a defective brown line train up Friday in 98th yard something was going on at Wells street bridge and the brown line trains was rerouted in the subway." So maybe, they've been down there over a week. DH
