"LED signage, rehabs"....CTA operators don't share railfan's interests, LOL.  Learned on the internet....."They had to lay up a defective brown line train up Friday in 98th yard something was going on at Wells street bridge and the brown line trains was rerouted in the subway."  So maybe, they've been down there over a week.

Remember if they are defective, there is no Skokie Shops to send them to. At least without teleportation. :P

Well, it was just a thought. I know the LED signage has to be done somewhere, and with the construction accident making the tracks leading to Skokie Shops unsafe, the Brown Line rehab project is in limbo. But, CTA could just have workers from Skokie temporarily transferred to another rail yard for working on these cars for rehab purposes. I don't know the facilities at 98th St. Yard, but if they have a rail house with pits or lifts, the work could probably be done there.

As far as the one in the pic, it was most likely defective, but there were reports of Midway and Kimball Yards being low on 3200's lately. So work must be going on somewhere.

Actually, there is a way. Back when Green Line was being rebuilt and Blue was isolated, CTA built some kind of ramp at Desplaines to put a car on a flatbed truck and drive it to Skokie. Apparently the ramp is still there, as the wrecks from Harlem were hauled out by truck. Plus the question is now becoming of what about 5600-5700 deliveries? Let a dozen or more pile up at Skokie and once the embankment is repaired haul several trainloads out on the same day? Remember, this could all take several months!

Well #3177-78 was hauled out by crane as it was too messed up to move it. It did end up at Skokie Shops but by truck so yes it is possible to transport that way, but that was a special case. i really don't see the urgency of moving 40 cars from Skokie, unless they are worried about vandalism, but they could always buy some train covers and cover them up and tie the covers down or secure them with a lock. They do have a roving security car so how can that not be secure?  #3171-72 went to 54th where I lost track of it but it may have went to Skokie Shops the conventional way as it got to 54th somehow and if it was too messed up to move it would have went straight to Skokie. They should just take this time and clear out some #2600 junks at Skokie. They don't need the odd mates that are up there especially the ones with damage they should just scrap them. (but maybe they already did as I haven't seen them lately) They don't have the Santa Express at Skokie so what's left to take up all the room?

The impression I got was that they were lifted at Harlem once the NTSB was done with them.I don't think they would have been put under their own power after a wreck, especially one blamed on the electrical system.

I'm going to move this to its own thread so we can find it easier, because it's a pain to have to page through the 3200 Rehabs thread to find my post and edit which ones have signs ;)

I'm gonna compile a quick list of the current rehab progress that we know of, now that signs of progress are visible.

Well it's good that the rehab of the 3200s has started and is moving along. But, I though the mid-life rehab / overhaul was also supposed to include under frame hardware (electrical and HVAC, traction motors, wheel bearings, etc). Or maybe I misread the earlier post about the rehab specs for the 3200s. At any rate, I'm sure that with respect to rehabbing the heavier components on these cars, the Skokie Line shutdown is probably going to put a kink in the overall progress.

It is, and apparently the only thing that is obvious to the riders is the replacement of the signs.

They probably can't get the other stuff done without the Shops accessible, but if they have a bunch of LED signs just sitting around, why not install them? They're supposed to be a drop-in replacement so it can probably just be done when they're sitting in a yard if they have the correct employees there.

Call me crazy but I swear I just saw #5000's on the orange line at quincy. In service.

O.oO.oO.oO.oO.o

You're sure? Like...digital run signs...interior LEDs...AC motors...the whole shebang? I never saw any announcements from the CTA! I guess it's time to tweet.

Ah, but you didn't look at the CTA "L" rosters thread when I said they were not any there because I went to Midway after that. I saw Orange signs!!  o.O Must have been the sun or something making Purple look Orange. :$ I did get some info though on the #3200's and where they all are on the Orange line. They are mostly in the yard with Kimball signs on them. They are in Brownage service and the rest are Orange line spares.

So don't break open the bubbly just yet!! :P When the #2600 scrapper shows up at Skokie and we have a Yellow line then we can probably celebrate #5000's on the Orange as there will be nothing else left to run it.

Ah dang...No, I didn't see the other thread...I still can't believe the Orange hasn't seen the 5000s because they have so many extras it only makes sense. I guess they need to scrap some 2600s to make yard space (which I hope is done sooner rather than later...)

According to this article

Some of the more than 250 cars awaiting work were sent to the north suburban heavy-maintenance facility before the Yellow Line shutdown, Chase said. Others will be trucked there until the Yellow Line reopens.

The plan calls for 16 cars to be worked on at a time to avoid disrupting service where the trains operate on the Brown and Orange lines, officials said. The upgrades are taking about six weeks per car, with all 257 cars modernized by 2017.

It sounds like they're still able to do rehabs, and will get a car done every 6 weeks. We should see some soon (but not many). They just have to truck them to/from shops.

Also they stated the contract was for 257 signs. I guess #3458 is SOL.I saw #3401-02 today with a new sign. At least I think so it was a newly wrapped car. Blue and bits of yellow. I think #3401-02 has that wrap but I think another one has it too. The trains follower was run #414.

Everything was 261 including the 4 test sets. Since all references since have been to 257, you are correct that any intention regarding 3458 has not been stated.

The question is can a married pair run with half a digital sign and half roll sign? How would they marry the controls?

The sign controls should stay the same up until the actual sign unit. As far as I know, the signs just receive a signal for which sign to display. The LED signs do the same; they just display it digitally instead of adjusting a rollcurtain.

I must be go crazy or blind because I thing I saw 3249-3250 on the Brown Line this morning with LED signs because that train are assign to Orange Line.

They can shuffle assignments around, but it was probably just a brownage. The Orange Line doesn't have many 3200s assigned to it at all right now, so it also could have just been a normal Brown Line assignment.

Here we are. The wrapped car I was looking for is at Kimball brown. #3339-40. Also a jack Daniel s wrap. It has the led signs.

I dont understand why CTA cant send some of these cars to the Blue line to revamp some of the old 2600 equipment. I was forced to return to the Blue line for my afternoon ride home now that my work scheduled has changed and I dont have Metra as an option for my PM commute unless I stay until 3pm. Believe me Im not a happy camper!!! Seeing nothing but "2600" equipment on just about every car I on my train! This is just f'n ridiculous!!!
