1000-series D40LF - Updates & Retirements

When i said other things i try avoid doing a rant of typeing all the different things.

Either way, CTA still has to operate within a set reality of factors such as it makes no sense to rehab a bus that hasn't hit 250,000 miles as well as they still need to have buses on hand for that pesky little thing called the Red Line South Rehabilitation Project. The shuttles for that project is keeping a good chunk of artics tied up not to mention what number of current CTA Novas ain't getting retired for the time being. Also there are the reports that folks are opting for the 3, 4 and 29 to get to points approaching 95th causing an uptick in the number of buses on those routes. So it stands to reason that CTA given those factors that CTA isn't sidelining 20 1000 series buses a week.

If i go by what you are typeing the CTA needs all these buses all the time 7 days a week.Reality,I think some of the overhaul can be done during non peak periods like on Sundays.I'm not sure how many mechanic are working at each garage.But,even in each garage get 3 done a week it can be done.

If they can't spare buses to keep from delaying start of Nova retirements at present what makes you think they can keep 20 or more buses off the road a week at a time without breaking promises to increase service where needed to minimize the inconvenience of the Dan Ryan shutdown as best they can AND keep regular service levels on the rest of the system? And even if they could, you still have to get around that knuckle of a detail that federal money is involved in the equation as Busjack pointed out, so they're not going to go at a pace in that has them at some point overhauling buses that are less than 6 years into their 12 year minimum service lives as defined by federal guidelines in what is supposed to be a MIDLIFE overhaul. If we were talking about a smaller bus order than the 1030 buses that took 3 years to deliver, then you would have a point on the pace being too slow.

Other than the announced retrofit of LEDs for fluorescent lighting, the jobs are contracted out. That's why they advertised for bids to begin with. Even this press release says that the main jobs were contracted to Cummins N Power and New Flyer ULC. If past is prologue, those entities will do the jobs off site, in their own facilities.

It certainly isn't a 103rd mechanic pulling out an engine and transmission and replacing it over a weekend.

That brings me to the 20 DE40LF model buses... I guess those buses will not be rehabbed and will be retired earlier than the D40LF model buses.

In that case. Then 900s probably won't make it for over next couple of years. They breakdown so many times.

Has it always been standard practice for CTA to contract out the bus/rail rehab work? At some systems (NYC Transit, NJ Transit, SEPTA, WMATA, etc) the overhaul work is done at a centralized non-revenue maintenance shop.

It depends on the job. For instance, the 5800s were contracted out and got new engines (but didn't last that long after that, compared to 6000s of similar age). Some lighter rehabs were done in house (don't know if in the garage or South Shops).

Similar thing on the L--the 2600s were taken off the property to Alstom, but the 2400s and 3200s got lighter rehabs in house. There were the news reports that Bombardier was in line to get a no bid contract to set up a facility in Chicago to rebuild the 3200s, but then the prebid meeting specs for the 7000s indicated that 7000s were supposed to replace the 3200s.

CTA has sent work to Bus and Truck of Chicago and Inland Detroit Diesel. CTA contract records indicate that Bus and Truck of Chicago did the 5800s.

Similarly, I don't know who rehabbed Pace's 2003 NABIs, but the rehab for the first 101 2600s was contracted out, and apparently from the specs and the award, went to three companies--1 to supply rebuilt engines, another to supply rebuilt transmissions, and a third to remove the old ones and install new ones.

That's interesting, given Chicago's rep as a strong union town that ATU didn't fight to keep the work in house. I recall SEPTA attempting to contract out overhaul work on their Market-Frankford Line cars before TWU 234 filed a grievance.

I'm sure they would have filed a grievance if they could. In addition ATU doesn't represent crafts personnel (as indicated when Rodriguez got a separate agreement with the craft unions before laying off ~10% of ATU membership in 2010).

Apparently, though, that was not an issue in the jobs I cited.

You can't overhaul a bus just during non-peak periods. It takes longer than a weekend to do so. In fact, I'd be extremely surprised if it took less than a week per bus (but that, of course, depends on whether the shop doing the work is running 24/7 or not).

It's not something you roll into the shop on Friday night and have a rebuilt bus ready for Monday morning rush hour.

CTA can spare some buses. If they are doing a full rehab taking the buses down to the bare bones, they can just send the buses that are sidelined at the garage in need of repair. Places that have alot of #1000's shouldn't have a problem missing buses, the challenge will be what they do when going to garage that relies more on a smaller fleet of #1000's like 77th or FG. They could address that though by just swapping rehabbed buses for non rehabbed buses. Another challenge would be doing the rehabs in order, if that's what they do, but I have a feeling they just be doing it by options, not in order.

That's what they are supposed to do, full rehab from the frame up. I wonder how they will do it... will they just go garage to garage or just pluck random buses from various garages and rebuild them.

On another note... I wonder if 1482 will be the first to get a "gut" rehab since it's been sitting for several years now.

Probably pluck random buses from garages, like they did before, but the difference will be only working on one option at a time, like buses up to #1429, then #1430 - #1629 and so on. I think if they run into a shortage problem, they'll just swap the newer option buses to those places that are all lower option like FG. It's good most of the first option buses are split up, this shouldn't be too much of a problem versus if they were all at one garage.

Is there any garage with only a straight block of 1000s now? It isn't like Archer got 1000-1110, Kedzie got 1111-1220 (or thereabouts) as it once was.

My point is that the buses may now be sufficiently dispersed that this isn't an issue.

You are forgetting that there was a base order and then option 1. IIRC, it was something like 245 and 185 (also add the 20 hybrids to the amount of the base).

However, your point is just for the sake of argument, anyway.

The base and first option were delivered together, (one right after the other) so they should be similar age. (I have all the #1000 delivery dates, I should post those and then we would have exact dates) They didn't have a break in deliveries until #1430, but it was a short one, like a month, IIRC.

But since delivered over at least a year, would still be relevant for this purpose, i.e. 1002 is still older than 1402.

The only real distinction between options is that the lighter buses started with Option 3.

I'm not saying they can't spare buses at all, but I was making a point of factors that come into play of why they're going with the pace as they reported for the rehabs over the superhuman Herculean pace mk seemed to be advocating.

The first of the #1000 series rehabs are on the street now. Just spotted #1165 in the loop on the #157. It has the led interior lights like the stimulus artics and the updated clever devices signs. The bus has been repainted but I can't tell if the headlights have been updated. I'll get some pictures if I can. The bus seems to have disappeared off the tracker. The first of the #1000 series rehabs are on the street now. Just spotted #1165 in the loop on the #157. It has the led interior lights like the stimulus artics and the updated clever devices signs. The bus has been repainted but I can"t tell if the headlights hsve been updated. I'll get some pictures if I can. The bus seems to have disappeared off the tracker.

Please do, BusHunter!!! Outside of the lights and the updated Clever Devices signs, anything else appear different? Did they give it the seating that 1305-2029 have? Did they go with the seating that 4150-4207 have, or did they leave it the same seating that 1000-1304 have? Also does the engine sound different than before? The original engine for this bus was a Cummins ISM, so my guess is they just rebuilt this engine and installed it back into 1165.

The seats are the same as what was on it before, the buses are very similar to the pre rehab state. The only difference I could really see in the daylight was they put a different sign on the rear liftgate. But thebus is pretty fresh it has no exterior advertising. Looks like they did do some detailing on the inside though. My observations so far are from the outside.

Well 1165 is out of Kedzie, and is not the oldest of the fleet(1000-1002), so looks like they might be going garage by garage. If more blocks of Kedzie buses start showing up rehabbed, then this is how the CTA is doing the mid-life "gut" rehabs of the 1000-Series New Flyer D40LF buses.

I'm not surprised they didn't go with seating like that of 4150-4207 as longitudinal seating arrangements throughout the entire length of CTA vehicles is just downright unpopular with riders from what we learned when the 5000 series railcars started getting delivered. That was one of the top complaints from people.

Well, as far as 4150-4207 is concerned that was more due to CTA being stuck in a rough spot with no choice but to take tht seating design (and arrangement). Someone in another thread (4300's thread?) Mentioned that those were the only seats available when CTA placed the order.... And there were 226 reasons for CTA not to wait for there regular seats to come in :lol:
