Express Flyer
No there's not a kill switch like there is on the old novas, flyers, & artic's. I fixed the problem myself so I had to be outside with the doors closed. So to do that I had to use the butterfly to release the pressure at the front doors so they'd open so I could go out & close backs myself. There is an interlock switch to override the rear doors just like on the old Novas. It's located inside the panel above the drivers side sliding window. I didn't know you could release the pressure on the front doors with the butterfly, but I do see operators manually opening the front doors so I guess your right. So that can be done with the rear doors too? I guess I need a training course to fully understand it. I learned quite a bit of the basics just by playing with the Chicago Downtown bus simulator. Cool but I don't think it has that function in the game. Maybe they missed that part of the simulation.

andrethebusman
Butterfly takes the air off the front doors so they can be opened and closed manually. Kill switch overrides door interlocks. With kill switch in off position, rear door operators, rear door lock, and touchbars have no power to them, so if a touchbar is hanging up, or somebody has pushed the door while it is still locked, this will clear it. Or if you pull in on the nf's rear door if it opened and got stuck due to a interlock not fully opening with a heavy tug you can get the door to open. Not standard procedure but it works. andrethebusman
What you are describing (pulling on a sticking door) is actually making the sensor that tells the door to open to shut off. This sensor, which replaced the touchbars of old, senses if somebody is standing in the stepwell when the driver unlocks the door. Sometimes the sensor keeps sensing even though nobody is there and door stays open. If somebody goes into stepwell, sensor will probably go back to normal when that person steps back and door will close. Flicking the killswitch off and on is a much simpler way of dealing with it, and much more likely to work.

It seems to only work on #1000's though. For some reason it seems the sensor can trip a moment before the door opens and it trips it up. People messing with the door and pushing it out prematurely can also cause this to happen. It seems to be a bug in the sensor or interlock but you won't hear NF telling you this. The switch is below the red switch cover that you can see. If you zoom in on your pic you can just make out the top of its own red switch cover. Express Flyer
They never had those panels opened at Chicago. So I didn't even know that panel was there. Do you think these will be accessible to operators when these buses are in service? I don't think so.

I thought when someone mentioned it was on the operators side, I was like OK that's a better design, the operator can just stand up and do this versus crossing to the right side of the bus. Looks like they reserved this for maintenance. That's bad news. Maybe CTA will leave it open for you guys, will maintenance really mess with a key every time they open this? Plus it's in a restricted area for operators so why not?

I was on the #54 on #8158 at Diversey and you know how they have that high curb there nb? Well the back door came out and got stuck on it while in an almost open position. Now being in that state mean't the pressure for the back door kept pushing it out. So since the operator asked for my assistance, I helped him troubleshoot the doors. I saw this pressure problem was the issue, so I decided to go up and talk to him. I asked him if there was a kill switch for the rear door to shut off the pressure. He said no. I was like really, WTH Nova bus. I looked for one myself. It doesn't have one that I can see. WTH!! So he tried a few things like shutting off the bus completely. No dice. So he came back and tried to push against the doors but they were fighting him so I went outside and shut the doors for him, while he turned off the doors. It worked, so I saved him a call to control. He waved to me when I got off the bus. I guess he liked the assist. What are Bushunters for anyway? Now CTA can send me my paycheck. Now if this is really true with the back doors, then hopefully this will be a part of the training at FG because I didn't know that. So NF has them beat on that point since every time a similar problem happens on a 1000, the operator hits that kill switch near the top right of the front windshield or will ask a rider to hit it. BusHunter
Better late than never here is #8198 our 45 day south shops bus. It's been doing good this week running practically all week, but I must have brought it bad luck. Would you believe this bus had the same stuckitis with the rear door that #8158 had. This time I observed what happened. Operator passes Linder/Fullerton accidently and stops next to a parked car. The woman gets off with a Christ statue, unfortunately while there is room for her to egress there is not room for her Christ statue. So she stands there with the door open, eventually gets back on and leaves via the front door. I don't know what happened but the door got stuck again De Ja Vu (cue the Dionne Warwick song ) but the door was fully extended. Maybe when someone stands too long in the door the sensor crashes. The door was not stuck on the car. So like I say I observed, the operator killed the air pressure to the front door, no dice. He then did not go to the panel to shut off nothing and this guy seemed like he knew his stuff. He asked someone to close the door. One guy tried to close it but that door is stronger inside than out. He held up his hands, I was like Oh Boy!! It eventually took two guys to close the door and hold it shut so the operator could fix it. Now in conclusion I'll styate no one seems to know how to kill the air pressure to the door, which is bad. Maybe someone needs to download me on #8158 closing the door and play "this is how we do it" cause it seems no one knows about this switch busops mentioned. artthouwill
The butterfly on the old buses was located on the left near the drivers ankle. On old motor coaches it wasn't a butterfly, but a small lever with a little red ball that you pushed down to release the air on the front door. It was located below the dash just above the right knee.
busfan2847
Had same problem on 8167 on the 157 yesterday morning. Operator got out and went and looked at the doors, I guess to make sure they were not stuck on anything. Got back in turned the bus off waited 10 seconds and turned it back on again. After a series of beeps the back doors closed and off we went!

Well hopefully we'll see #8197 or 99 on the streets of FG this week. If not we may actually see #8200 go in service and be the first one. In other FG related happenings, the recent #1000 buses have stickers from 3 different garages, #1035 has a 6 one, #1038 has a 3 one and I think #1034 has a 1. Call me nuts but I swear #1038 smells like candles burning. I notice #1041 to #1044 were not in service this weekend. Do we dare to dream. "Dream a little dream with me!!"
