So after doing another sweep of the boneyard this list of buses I've compiled have caught my attention as far as being LTH for maintenance reasons or early candidates for retirement. I don't want jump the gun too soon but after seeing the same usual suspects sit idle for this long with no movement and parts starting to be stripped only one can wonder when is it time to make that call so to speak. On a good note I did see #1197 finally getting worked on in the shops area after it has sat idle for two years in the boneyard.

Not as unexpected as one thinks. Actually only 1 under 1630. Options 3 and 4 (1630-2029) were the ones with carbon steel frames wrapped in aluminum, instead of stainless steel frames. Maybe they rusted. Interesting question is that after getting the 600 Novas, there was at least a plan to give a life extending rehab to 430 1000s. Unless these are sitting for that, it's hard to figure out what CTA will do to maintain fleet numbers.

While the rust issue might be the first nail in the coffin due to sitting,  I don't think that's the issue that landed those buses at SS.  Some may be mechanical,  others may be accident related.  In any case, this could affect what CTA actually keeps around.   Some of the 1000 - 1629 batch may outlast many of the 1630 -2029 batch.  CTA will have to get a jolt from its electric bus fleet or bite the bullet and order one more round of diesel buses.

Yeah you're right on that. I just wouldn't be surprised if certain blocks of buses from either option of 1000 - 1629 & 1630 - 2029 started getting sidelined in the next several months because the order of #8350s will be halfway delivered by then. There's already a shift of #7900s taking place that will soon effect the remaining fleet of 1000s getting replaced from certain garages. The pictures below just showcase what I've seen up close during walk through of the boneyard.

My assumptions from last week about the last batch of buses I reported on appear to be true. #1646 is on LTH questionable for early retirement, parts have been stripped from the interior, farebox has been removed along with its ventra reader.

Dam I wonder what went on with 1646

1930 looks all but done for, it is sad that some of 1900 and 2000 are in the boneyard. I noticed when it was hot this week that 1000 series has the best AC compared to Nova (7900s and 8350s).

It’s very disappointing to see the newer 1000s from 2008 and 2009 in the 1630-2029 range built on carbon frames have severe issues with rusting in the structure while older ones from 2006-2007 don’t have the problem. This is why older equipment are in better shape. I wonder if it’s possible to fix the problem on the buses other than that these may end up retired.

Yea I learned when I seen 1447 that the rust is taking a toll on alot of them

The 800s/900s are now Scrapped Except 804 still in the Boneyard. is same time. It's time to Retired the 1000s soon

Every 800-series except 801 is back there so that’s 9/10 buses. While 905 is the only 900-series bus back there while the other 9 buses in the 900-series are gone.

It may be a while before any other 1000s retire. With some of the 2008 and 09 models having rust issues who knows what the future will hold up for these.
