At least we know it won't be scrapped.

Only in the sense that it may be on a litigation hold for a while. @YoungBusLover made the connections that it had been out of service, and instead of being on the northwest side, it was 1 block from the boneyard. But you won't be able to catch it at Jefferson Park.

Well then it might as well be retired. At least it wasn't a new bus.

Yeah but they look tired. They are 17 year old buses. That brings back flashbacks of chicago garage when they had some of the last #5300"s. No rehab was given to those either.  It's really amazing the buses are still running. Probably everything imaginal has been replaced at least once.

They could last just as long as 4400s and Old 4000s Americana when they reach about 18& half to 19 years old.  Never know.  It's odd that they did outlast Pace's Orion 6000s which they were same age.

CTA has the deeper pockets to keep them running. I don't get it. If they cost more than a new bus to fix why not get a new bus.

There was a long time when just about all CTA buses lasted about 18-20 years (such as 9000 series 1976 buses until 1995).Pace had Orion Is lasting almost that long, but the only virtue Pace ever said about the Orion VIs was that they were $10,000  less each than the NABIs.

CTA bus actual service life probably also depends on how many times they got overhauls, and the recent capital plans indicate that about 400 1000s are supposed to get another round.

The unanswered question on when the last of the 6400s is to be replaced is whether that is supposed to be part of the 5 year contract for about 600 buses; we assumed that was only to replace 1000s, but with about 100 6400s because at least 100 articulateds are surplus, who knows?

We don't know that, especially since a new CTA bus is now over $500K, while a rehab is not that. Obviously, though, those not worth fixing are not fixed.

@pete6125  might have overgeneralized, but his point is well taken that one can't make assumptions based on a holiday reading when maybe 2/3 of the buses are in the yard.

@Johnny 5 : Take a reading off the archive during some recent weekday rush hour.

That's usually a sign that the buses are getting too old and putting an unnecessary burden on the operations budget. They probably don't have the buses to restrict service any further like Saturday operations. The buses are just getting too old, you can't expect them to run like new. I'll be really shocked if they make 2019.
