BusHunter
Now it gets interesting, after the #2400's are gone up north, what are they going to do with the Orange line #2400's? Retire them with #2600's? Wait and just replace with #5000's? Send #2600's to the Blue? Something they could also do is as the Red line gets more #5000's just start sending the lowest ones to the Orange line, but really that wouldn't be fair to the Orange line getting older cars, but all of those options are possibilities. BusHunter
According to the lastest roster info #2411-16, #2419-20, #2423-24, #2429-30, #2433-36, #2441-42, #2449-52, #2453-56, #2459-60, #2465-68, #2473-74, #2489-90, #2505-08, #2509-12, #2515-16, #2519-20, #2525-26, #2531-#2482 (mismate), #2533-34, #2537-40, #2541-50, #2555-56, #2559-62, #2563-64, #2583-84, #2587-88 are currently the last #2400 cars now in service on the Orange line. 2200SeriesFan
Sad, if that really is true about no more 2400 series cars assigned to the Purple Line as of this week. Does that include even the few red/white/red beltrail(w/lower numbers than rest of 2400s) 2400 work series motor cars, that were assigned to the Purple Line for years? I do recall during the Red Line South project a year ago, how for whatever reason that 2400s did occasionally show up in Red Line service for the first time in a very long time. I'm sure that was a temporary measure having the 2400s run on the Red, while new 5000s were delivered, assigned, and entered into Red Line service last year. MTRSP1900-CTA3200
To see them now as just an occasional pop up on the Orange Line is pretty sad. Maybe I'll try to take the train to the plane in June! The only thing I won't miss about the 2400s is in recent times, how much of a racket they'd make compared to the other trains I'd see waiting at Clark/Lake. BusHunter
I was talking to someone in rail about the funeral train the other day and they said that what they do is take four cars up to Skokie to retire and come back south with four working cars. If you have been wondering where they are coming from as I was, they are coming from Ashland/63rd. I haven't been south maybe someone wants to check that out. They got four more cars on the move tonight.(so another 8 car set will be assembled) #2495-96 and #2565-66 have been authorized for retirement. I don't think they are being moved though until around midnight. They tried to move them last night but the batteries were dead and the cars wouldn't move. So I don't know if anyone wants to film it or not, so now you know.
ChicagoNova
On my way to a friend's house in Evanston, I saw at least two cars of the 2400 Series. Don't know the numbers.

Busjack
That was 2401-2402 sitting in Howard yard. Again, leaving the question whether the work cars will stay around, even though the rest should have been gone by now.
chicagopcclcar
Again, leaving the question whether the work cars will stay around, even though the rest should have been gone by now. There is plenty of history showing how the CRT/CTA used non-revenue vehicles for work service. Before the 2400s there used for work service the CTA used the 5- 50 pcc cars. The were used though they came a rule...."they had to be kept in serviceable condition because they had been rehabbed with Federal money." Two 5- 50 pcc cars from the collection at IRM in Union, IL. Originally the series was called the 1- 50s. But the first four cars were the high-performance cars and were stricken off the roster long ago. sw4400
Again, leaving the question whether the work cars will stay around, even though the rest should have been gone by now. I believe some will, but not all of them... this is the list of all 2400's with work-capable motors... 2401-2402 2403-2404 2405-2406 2407-2408 2409-2410 2411-2412 2413-2414 2415-2416 2417-2418 2419-2420 2421-2422 Currently 2405-2406, 2417-2418 and 2421-2422 are assigned as a work train at the lower 63rd Yard. 2401-2402*, 2403-2404, 2407-2408 and 2409-2410 are assigned as a work train at Harlem Yard, all according to BusHunter's 2400's rosters here and here *Mentioned by chgofan78 to be sitting in Howard Yard(link) I don't think the CTA needs 22 work motor cars. 6-12 should be adequate since these cars only usually see use during off-peak hours to haul flatcars with supplies around. I imagine when the 2600's get 3/4ths retired, 2891-2898 will be replacing some of these work cars and 3441-3444 will join them and/or replace a few of them as the 3200's are just about all retired. MTRSP1900-CTA3200
Guys, I am currently riding a Purple Line Express with 2400 work cars. I thought they were off the Purple Line. I'll try to get pictures soon.
eyetube21
Earlier today when I ride the Yellow Line, I've seen one of the 2400s at the Skokie Shops. There, it looks like they're going to leave the service. Mismates were taken off.

jtrosario
Saw 6 or 8 2400s with their red stripes this afternoon and carrying yellow work equipment in the middle of their set. Once, going SB on the Green line over I-55 and the second time going NB on the Green/Orange line North of Roosevelt about an hour or so apart. Sorry, I wasn't at liberty to take pics. Hence, unless there is some work being done at Midway Yard, there is no particular reason for them to head there. Good shot, though.

I was thinking at the time why they were out there but the only work that was going on that I know of was track maintenance between 69th and 87th. However, I've totally forgot about the reconstruction between Western and Logan Square tomorrow night. So that may only be the relevant reason of that set heading out there even though I don't know where they at earlier this morning. Thanks. BusHunter
Word is coming that the #2400's will be gone off the Orange line by September. And yes they will get #2600's. Maybe there is still hope for the Blue line to get #3200's. I don't see them putting #2600's on the Orange for just a few months, as next year should start their #5000 deliveries unless they have already started with a train here and there. BusHunter
Any word on the supposed rehabs of the 3200s? That's scheduled for after the end of #5000 deliveries after Sept 2015
sw4400
That's scheduled for after the end of #5000 deliveries after Sept 2015 Is that the updated delivery finalization date? There were two delays in the beginning(wheel problems & missing bolt in frames) that shelved the 5000-Series deliveries for a few months. Well it could be earlier if they start delivering 6 cars on a consistent basis. This is based on a four cars a week delivery schedule. Of course if there is another bombard delay that timetable is off the table of course!!
BusHunter
I just received word that 8 #2600's are now at midway yard. #2609-10, #2635-36, #2661-62 and #2799-2800.
