I'll check again but not every bus will receive a Yellow or Red stickers before they are towed away for scrap. If #1682 does have a red sticker it'll be the first #1000 to get one after sitting for less than 6 months while #1697 has sat almost two years now with no sticker until most recently.

Wow! It really was a poor decision for the CTA to buy carbon steel-frame buses! The 4000s have carbon steel-frames too. If carbon-steel frame 1000s continue to be removed from service due to rust at this rate, the CTA will have to assign Novas to North Park (new 8350s, reassigning 7900s, or both).

Not necessarily at least they’ve met their 12-year warranty LOL!!!! Salt, sand and extreme winter temperatures may be to blame it’s not CTA.

Did the CTA choose to order buses with carbon steel frames when they ordered those buses from New Flyer (the last 430 1000s and the 4000s) or does New Flyer now only produce buses with carbon steel frames?

If you look back at the press releases cited up the thread, it was CTA's decision.

Update: After looking @YoungBusLover's post, I dug up the links: 1630s, 4000s.

Reading the articles this last paragraph at the end hasn't aged too well. Make ya wonder how much did the CTA really save since the purchase and then post rehab of 2015.

"In addition, before completing its order for 400 low-emission 40-foot buses from New Flyer of America, Inc., the CTA was able to reduce the weight of these new buses by approximately 1,000 lbs. By switching from a stainless steel chassis to carbon steel and by using a smaller, more efficient engine, the gas mileage increased from 3.18 mpg to 3.28 mpg.

Each of the 400 buses is expected to average 40,000 miles per year in travel making the annual savings in fuel costs more than $565,000, just by operating a lighter vehicle. Furthermore, because the newer buses are 38% more fuel efficient than the buses they are replacing, the total savings to the CTA over the anticipated 12-year life span of the buses is nearly $80 million. The CTA began taking delivery of the new low emission buses earlier this year, with 110 currently in service, and expects to have all 400 by spring 2009.

Combined, the CTA expects that these steps will save $ 91.5 million over the 12-year average life of the buses compared to the costs to operate the current fleet of buses."
