Not only that you’ll see majority of the #800s retired from 2015-2017. Stripped almost to the bone to the point there is no more parts to take out of them. The next buses you’ll have to strip is the options 3 and 4.

well #1190 has made a return it was on the X49/49 in the AM rush and somewhat thru midday last i heard it was one of the buses to get rehabbed? (don’t believe yet tho it’s not confirmed)

Yep with all the rusting reports on numerous buses. Most of the #1630 and up have been OOS for over a year now at least. At first I thought they were going to do a mix bag of retirements from all blocks throughout the series when their time comes. Which they’re long overdue so I wouldn’t beg for CTA to fix the problem and bring them back, now there are enough #8350’s to start the retirements, since there is no point of fixing them. Also that we hearing they’ll rehab the ones in the #1000-1629 range since they were built on better framing which will feel weird to have the older ones in the series to remain while the newer ones have to forcibly get retired. Don’t take my word on this part maybe the coating wasn’t strong enough to protect the framing underneath.

Yea it's just like how CPD tahoes me be ate up from rust & be holes & all man alot of the 1630+ look good on the outside but underneath it's a different ballgame

On one of the questions in response to a bus specification (I forget which one) one of the bidders asked about the need for the 12-year warranty on the frame, and CTA replied that Chicago used something like magnesium sulfate or magnesium chloride in the road salt. Apparently less damaging to the environment, but more damaging to cars.

That's true it's good sald it melt ice & snow fast af but it's tuff af on cars

I found some new editions to the the boneyard I found over the weekend being that #1122, #1152, #1189,#1689,#1747,#1763, and #1984.  This will be the first time in a while that I've visibly seen #1747. The bikerack is removed among other interior components. #1305 and #1821 were finally given LTH/300 stickers, A host of other #1000s have them as well now.

No. The 2024 CTA budget (page 81 of 126) says they will:

I'm confused why they wouldn't try and fix up the 1630s and up since they're newer. Plus I feel like 1000-1429 kinda been through it. A lot of those buses were at either 77th or 103rd lol.

This is kinda depressing cause I "grew up" with the new flyers. Saw them from day 1. At least they aged well and kept somewhat of a kick to them compared to the OG Novas   ?

Because they were the ones with aluminum-wrapped carbon steel frames and according to various drivers here, the frames are shot. If that's the case, not worth fixing.

To me they're what the #4000 MAN Americanas were as far as lasting as long as they have and also looking like the modern version of it. Although they're not even close to the #5300s/#6000s which is how I view them as a whole in regards to the overall multiple variations of transmissions, engine, signage among other things. They truly are the 2nd best purchase CTA has ever made that has lasted this long while also being this efficient at nearly 20 years old.

To give a bit of better context here are some photos of what Carbon Steel looks like after it has aged through the elements as shown below from buses #1697, #1831,and #1937.

Same I miss how they sounded before the rehabs and with #1630 and above to have the blue type lighting which I miss so much on them as well

Ok as a biker I totally understand. I avoid modern carbon and aluminum frames and use vintage steel for durability

I'm not sure if it was cost saving measure done by CTA or New Flyer themselves but the #4000 and #4300s artics may have a similar Carbon Steel frame which is possibly another factor to add in as to why so many are sidelined as well.

Perhaps it’ll be selected buses from #1000-1629 range. Majority of the oldest ones throughout that range will still get retired varies by condition.

I'm surprised they got 1831 back and running in 2022, but that was before the buses started getting pulled for good. Now 1831 is back and it's probably done with by now.
