Now, the 1000-1629 series if I recall correctly are powered by the Cummins ISM engines, and the 1630-2029 series are powered by the Cummins ISL series engines. Aside from 1930-2029, which have Allison transmissions, not ZF's... could they transplant the engines from them to the older models as these probably have less miles on them due to them being newer model years. Would that be plausible given the amount of work needed to transplant engines from one bus to another? That would be like a overhaul, so to speak....

Aside from the implication that that would result in the buses being underpowered, (Press release referring to smaller engine for lighter bus), and all of fhe 1000s being rehabbed randomly at about the same time (topic), bus powertrains are made to slide out. At least in Pace specs, the requirement was to provide another rebuilt engine and keep the old engine for whatever Cummins or other service center wanted. Thus, it is unlikely that any older bus has its original engine. In any event, the bus gets a rebuilt engine.

I would say road salt is #1 problem, especially underneath.

Indeed it is.

CTA will have to figure out which is better, leaving 1630s and up outside st FG or subjecting those buses to Lake Effect Snow, which tends to hit the south side near the lake more?  Between replacing these and the 4000s, CTS has its work cut out.  This is why I keep saying that CTA has to order st least another set of diesel buses,  if not more until there's some consistency and reliability with electrics.  I still think 2040 is too soon to aim for an all electric fleet.

Spreading those Option 3/4 buses out around the system should help alleviate the issue to some degree.  CTA really needs to hit a home run here though as far as getting nearly 1208 buses replaced effectively over the next 5 - 10 years.

I did not know that the 4000's are also carbon steel frames, reading back how 4000-4207 are suffering the same issues as 1630-2029 are. That can be bad as 4300-4399 aren't enough artics to maintain all artic routes in the CTA, I would surmise. Will this mean an order for more artics will be forthcoming by 2025 or 2026?

208 artics to replace.4000-4207. possibly another 100 based on a recent report

How many 1630-2029 1000-Series buses have been retired due to rust?

Welcome back Sir! To answer your question though, The #1630-#2029 range of Flyers might get phased out sooner rather than later especially if the overall cost to maintain them before the rehabs even start become too expensive. The real key in this equation right now to me is FG with all those former K #1600s they've received in the last several weeks. If they can't survive the outdoor conditions up there this winter and early spring I think we'll see another shift of buses being moved from the #1630-#2029 range. Realistically it would be better if those buses we're split up evenly with C,74th,77th, and 103rd. Sending FG back some #1200s/#1300s in exchange for  #1600s from 77th could perhaps keep the Carbon frames from getting worse, Sending some #1700s/#1800s to 74th in exchange for #1400s/#1500s to NP and C could also work and then the last of the #1900/#2000s could be split up between the remaining garages of 74th,77th and 103rd.

Kedzie has a lot of the older 4000s, so this is another reason why Kedzie needs 8350s.

Time will tell once the Winter Pick begins next month. In a weird way NP,FG and C may have to start treating those buses like the #6400s and only run them during peak service to cut down on the amount of time they'll be in serivce. 74th should off load those extra #7900s they have to help out if push comes to shove.

Unrelated to the #1000s but it appears that all of the #800s are in line ready to be towed in the next few days or so, with #804 leading the way.

Same here, is #905 also in line. that bus has been back there the longest along with the #6400s that retired in 2014. let me know  if u can snap some shots for an update

A lot of buses are being kicked off the street due to rusting issues…but one unit in particular with a good chunk of rust on it and is still operating, two months after first being spotted with the rusting, is still active. This is 1869 out of north park. Pretty surprised they’re keeping this one running for now even with all the rust it’s got.

This might be obvious, but can someone let me know why rust is an issue if the bus runs?

If the chassis is cracked, it's unsafe. Inspection on a hoist will tell.

Unlike earlier buses, like the Flxible Metros, these buses have composite body shells, so the rust is not merely superficial.

One could probably surmise that after a month still in operation that NP or maybe South Shops maintenance folks have done such such inspections for 1869. CTA already has the feds looking over its shoulder after the recent Yellow Line accident. I'm not saying that to be alarmist. I don't think they'd really risk it by not having proper inspections to put the bus in service for so long after spotting the rust areas along the lower frame. Ever since the big NABI meltdown, they've visibly and historically tended to get that part right as evidenced by the number of NFs pulled off the road and moved down to South Shops boneyard, the increase of 7900s and deliveries of 8350s to K, and the swapping in of displaced, relatively better condition lower option NFs to NP.
