I also saw a NOT IN SERVICE sign NOT IN SERVICE means that it is not in service, such as heading on a non revenue trip (Andre said there is one trip per day between each garage and 77th for supplies, for instance). You seem to have some idea (based on your last 2 posts) that it means the bus is dead. Usually a dead bus is stuck in a yard with a big X on it, or on a tow hook. For instance, around 1974, I saw from the Dan Ryan L a trolley bus on Wentworth. Going up the stairs, I saw it was being towed. It was not running magically 45 years before its time, but was junk.

I think he saw a work bus to be honest. They've been working under the L recently on Lake

Last I saw they do indeed designate work buses with WB as part of the fleet number, and the 6400s have the odd present day distinction of still being in revenue service and having a few from their midst be work buses. Prior series of CTA's more recent times became work buses only after full retirement from what we all saw up to this point.

If I'm understanding correctly, there are two generations of novas, the 6400 (1st gen, delivered 2000-2004) and 7900 (2nd gen, delivered 2014-status pending). He might be referring to what was delivered to Montreal* and on Province of Quebec contracts, but if he is, he should so state. _______ *For instance,Montreal got some LFSs that had windows similar to those on the RTSs and Flxible Metros, as opposed to later round rectangular ones like on the 6400s. He's actually right on technical terms in regards to NOVA as a whole. What CTA has at the moment is there 2nd generation of NOVA's but in terms of bus model this is the 4th Generation of NOVA LFS. During the time that the #21 ran primarily Novas, that route (along with the #60) were assigned to the now-defunct Archer Garage, not Kedzie.

Archer Garage closed on February 7, 2010, with the Novas that were assigned there redistributed to Chicago, Forest Glen, 77th, North Park and 74th at that time. It was demolished four years later. Retail space today occupies the site.
