garmon757
Another possible case of the loser leave town match. More than likely the layover is there because it is out of that garage, although an exception to that rule was that while the 24 bus used to turn through the Beverly garage lot, it was a 77 route. But, as discussed before, unless there was some real reason to get the bus out of Marquette Park, backtracking to 69th wasn't really serving any passengers, except those from 74th going to jury duty.I don't mind the route being like it is now but you're absolutely right about the ridership. The problem is that I really don't think there's a reasonable explanation why move it out of Marquette Park. Also, it's highly improbable to have the route split up i.e. certain trips to 74th and other trips to a different destination like Western Orange Line or 63rd/Kedzie for examples. sw4400
Whoa!!! I may be young but I remembered damn well that #5745-64 had the exhaust/tailpipe with the cover!!! Check out this post here, garmon... It's got a nice blowup of 5746 and you can see the tailpipe in the rear of it(with no cover).
MTRSP1900-CTA3200
So you guys want something to talk about explain this crazy looking bus. what the hell.jpg what the hell rear.jpg I don't know much about the bus, but I noticed a set of 2200s in the background in the first picture. When were these photos taken?

It's got a nice blowup of 5746 and you can see the tailpipe in the rear of it(with no cover).I haven't rode that bus since 2006 when it was operating #66 (very weird). I forgot about that one didn't have it. So to correct myself, most of them did. Oh by the way, what if I tell you that one of the 5700s had the cover and the Alcoa rims but isn't inside 5745-64 range. Would you believe me? :p

I only seen one or two of these Cummins L-10 series buses, and none of them had the cover. I was guessing it was a Flxible thing at the time as these buses were built on the same body as the rest of the 5300-series Flxibles, only difference being Alcoa rims and engines. The 6000's which came four years later had the exhaust caps installed(I don't know if it was something post-1991 or just a little $5-10 part the CTA didn't want on the 5300's at the time). But, seeing only one or two and both without the caps(and only 20 in the group), one would guess they were all alike. Not doubting your word, just going with my eyes on this one... As far as another 5700 outside of the Cummins versions having the Alcoas, I wouldn't dismiss it. 6032 had steel wheels like the 5300's did for a bit. andrethebusman
If one looks at Sacramento north of 71st in the park you can see why the 94 bus no longer goes there. To call it a paved street is at best hilarious. The pavement has totally disintegrated into mud. This is what happens when a street that was not designed for heavy vehicles (namely having a concrete base) is used continuously by heavy vehicles. Back when Golf Mill shopping center was rebuilt as an enclosed mall in the 1980's, Nortran moved their bus stop a bit north of where it had been, and in a couple of weeks there were holes a foot deep at the bus stop. Again, same problem. At shopping centers with bus service, only certain driveways are capable of handling buses (basically because it costs more to build a stronger road) and any efforts to run elsewhere end up quite disasterously. andrethebusman
#1905 and #1820 are back at their home garages and they were loaned out for days, so I think maybe it's still a loan, but the sighting of #1003-05 at Chicago makes me wonder if those might be transfers because they are in numerical order. 1003-1005 are indeed C
BusHunter
Where was it at? Skokie Shops? So you guys give up. I was told that that bus is used as a portable classroom. Didn't even know such a bus existed until a friend of mine showed me these. This was taken at the 2012 bus rodeo at Skokie Shops. They are having another rodeo this weekend in the same place and I was interested in the oddball stuff that shows up for these events. Now as far as the fleet number, I can't seem to find that out, i was simply amazed a #5300 still exists in pretty good condition. It is a #5300 for sure because it also has the black front door grab handles as well as the straight versus curved rear. With the Alcoa rims I was fooled myself into believing this was one of the #5745-#5764 Cummins Diesel group. But you guys are correct all those had the metal caps on the exhaust pipes. I think it may be one of the #5740-#5744 group that had the rims but were standard #5300 buses. There is also the possibility the cap is removed for this restoration/mod but not likely.
BusHunter
1003-1005 are indeed C I could further speculate and say the #1030 relocation to C may stick as well. They might actually be getting the lower numbered #1000's which I think would be good as they are starting to finish up on bus rehabs at Chicago and could use buses to rehab. 74th is almost done too and could use something else that has alot of unrehabbed buses. They could try to split up the #1600's to rehab them faster or go for the NP high #1300's low #1400's as they have alot of buses that could use a rehab. As far as another 5700 outside of the Cummins versions having the Alcoas, I wouldn't dismiss it. 6032 had steel wheels like the 5300's did for a bit. As BusHunter pointed out in his post telling us what the bus is for, the 5745-64 group DID have the covers on the exhaust pipes just like the 6000s did. It's the one other similarity besides the Alcoa rims that the 6000s carried over into their updated design. It's just that by the time these got moved from Archer once the 5300s as a whole were on the way out of revenue service, CTA had removed the covers from the exhaust pipes. I happen to remember when Kedzie had 5746 and most of the few other Cummins 5300s that hadn't gotten retired and thinking to myself how CTA not only reworked the engines but removed the exhaust covers. The photo you linked doesn't clearly show the small protrusions on front rim of the exhaust pipe that remained after they did because of the angle of CTA5750's shot, but if the angle were of that of BusHunter's pic above, you'd possibly see it. So Garmon is correct in his memory. It's probably safer to say that TI-2's former revenue fleet number was from among the 5741-5744 Detroit Diesel powered 5300s that had Alcoa rims.

What does 103rd get in return though? With its recent artic increase it's probably safe to say it doesn't need any more since most of the routes it doesn't use artics on are medium and lower capacity local routes that don't warrant use of an artic. jajuan
So if that's ti-2, where's ti-1? And what bus is it? LOL! I thought you noticed when you snapped the photo that the number they gave this one is TI-2. But you do raise a valid question about if there is another restored bus that's currently numbered TI-1. Mr.cta85
#1932 is operating on the #29 Now that's interesting I saw a old nova parked at 103rd today 1932 probably along with that nova are just loaners obviously but 1932 just may be more given that 103rd gave a few of our 1400's to 77th so in return 77tth may have gave some of their 40fters with the increase of they're 7900's as of today.
