Why's that? They're only going to Roosevelt...unless I missed something

You missed the discussion that when this has happened before, some Brown Line trains went to the REd Line middle track at 63rd ST, other Brown Line trains went all the way to 95th, and during the Wells ST Bridge reconstruction, Brown Line trains went to the middle track at 37th on the Green LIne elevated. REmeber we discussed why the trains couldn't turn back literally just south of Roosevelt? Busjack's Cicero and Forest Park's suggestion (being facetious) is a stretch, but Midway on the other hand....

Do tornado's actually hit the city proper? I though they just raged and ended in Calumet, Portage or Tinley Park

Do tornado's what actually...?

Seriously, that's a matter of debate. Skilling claims (1) they have in the past, but apparently not in the past hundred years and (2) the lake protecting the city is a myth. However, other meteorologists have claimed that the lake sets up a cold front roughly around Tinley Park (Tammie Souza so stated with respect to the Nov. 2013 tornado outbreak, and while the tornado did cross that line, it did not go much further), and that the cold lake took the height off the clouds that slammed the Rochelle and Fairdale area (Jerry Taft with "cloud volume radar" last night; otherwise Kenosha would have also been leveled). Also, last night radar showed rotation just off Calumet Harbor, but nobody put out a tornado warning for the lake.

The closest of which I am aware was the 1967 Oak Lawn tornado, known in transit circles because it destroyed the Suburban Transit Co garage and a lot of the fleet (NOAA source).

That is indeed a question that has a very close "Yes" to it. Tornadoes have struck extremely close to Chicago before and extreme far sections of our city.

March 28, 1920: An EF-4 tornado traveled over a 53 mile path, starting in Channahon, moving northeast to Wilmette and over Lake Michigan. The worst damage was in Maywood and Melrose Park. A total of 20 people were killed and 300 injured.

March 4, 1961: A rare tornado hits Chicago. An EF-2 ripped through the South Side—starting at 91st and Western and traveling to 68th Street and Lake Michigan. One person was killed, 115 hurt. The storm caused $7 million in damage.

April 11, 1965: An EF-4 hit McHenry, Crystal Lake and Wauconda, killing six and injuring 75.

April 21, 1967: A massive EF-4 storm cut a 28 mile path from Cherry Valley to Belvidere and Woodstock. A total of 24 people were killed and 500 injured. Thirteen were killed and 300 injured as 12 buses were tossed around Belvidere High School at dismissal time.

April 21, 1967: A violent EF-4 tornado formed in Palos Hills in Cook County and traveled through Oak Lawn and the South Side of Chicago. A total of 33 people died, and 500 people were injured by this 200 yard wide tornado that traveled 16 miles and caused over $50 million in damage.

June 13, 1976: An EF-4 tornado hit Lemont and traveled for eight miles, leaving $13 million in damage. Two people were killed and 23 injured.

August 28, 1990: A total of 29 people died and 353 people were injured when an EF-5 tornado pulverized Plainfield. It is believed to be the only EF5 tornado to strike in Chicago area.

April 20, 2004: A tornado destroyed more than half of downtown Utica. The EF-3 tornado killed nine people, including eight who died in the basement of the Milestone Bar.

***April 9, 2015***: A tornado hit Fairdale and Rochelle, about 20-25 miles from Rockford, respectively. The National Weather Service has classified this tornado as an EF-4. While not as close, I consider this close enough to Chicago as this whole thing occurred about 80 miles west of Chicago.

Judging by how there have been Tornadoes striking at least the far South Side of Chicago(91st & Western to 68th & Lake Michigan) makes you think that we are not as invulnerable as some may think. I actually believed the skyscrapers and closeness of large buildings would deter tornadoes from going through, but now I think we've just been damn lucky.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Chicago-area gets a tornado in the next few years. I think we were lucky that storm didn't start 100 miles south than it did. If it did, Chicago would've been a bulls-eye target and many lives could've been lost. There's been some close calls over the years, but there could be worse in the future. Could you imagine how much chaos and damage an EF5 would do in downtown Chicago? It would be a terrible sight.

Ted Fujita, who was easily the world's #1 tornado expert believed that tornadoes can't hit the central core of cities with 1,000,000 population or larger, due to the heat island effect.

Several tornadoes have hit Gary Indiana, but all stopped before getting to the steel mills, apparently due to all the heat from the blast furnaces.

That excerpt sounds more like it can't develop in the central city, as opposed to developing outside it and then have a path toward it. With the Nov,. 2013 tornadoes, some TV meteorologists were convinced it was heading either for Gary or, more significantly, Soldier Field, resulting in a halt of the Bears-Ravens game and sending the crowd under the stands.

The article doesn't explain why tornadoes always hit the trailer park.
