Upcoming Rail Alert For 6/21/15 @ 2a until 2p

Rail Line(s) Affected: Brown, Green

Level Of Service Interruption: --

Information: Trains are being rerouted on the Loop Elevated.

Brown Line: Trains will operate clockwise on the Inner Loop. Board/exit Brown Line trains on the Orange and Pink line platform at all Loop Elevated stations.

Green Line: Harlem-bound trains will operate on the Inner Loop via Wells and Van Buren. Board trains on the Orange and Pink line platform at stations on Wells or Van Buren.

Passengers may transfer between the Loop Elevated and the Red and Blue line subways at Harold Washington Library-State/Van Buren and Jackson.

Ashland/63rd and Cottage Grove-bound trains will not be affected.

This is due to construction for the new Washington/Wabash station.

Information: Brown Line trains will not stop at LaSalle/Van Buren.  Use the adjacent stations at Harold Washington Library-State/Van Buren, located 2-1/2 blocks east, or at Quincy, located 2-1/2 blocks northwest.

Note: Brown Line trains will stop at LaSalle/Van Buren from 2am to 2pm Sat, and from 2am to 2pm Sun, due to the Brown Line being rerouted clockwise via the Inner Loop during those periods. Orange and Pink line trains are not affected, and will stop at LaSalle/Van Buren all weekend.

This is due to improvements being made at LaSalle/Van Buren

Information: Trains in both directions will operate on the same track between Garfield and Ashland/63rd. Board/exit all trains on the Harlem/Lake-bound platform at Halsted.

This is due to structure and track maintenance to ensure that trains continue to operate safely along the Green Line.

Level Of Service Interruption: Planned Work w/Reroute

 

Information: Brown Line trains will be rerouted to the State St. Subway between Fullerton and Downtown. Board/Exit Brown Line trains at any State St. Subway station between North/Clybourn and Roosevelt.

 

  • Service to/from Armitage, Sedgwick, Chicago and Merchandise Mart, free Shuttle Buses will operate between Fullerton and Clark/Lake, making stops at or near the affected stations.
  • A Shuttle Train will operate around the Loop Elevated, on the Brown Line side for connections to Brown Line service in the State St. Subway and the Shuttle Buses at Clark/Lake(Blue)

This is due to structural improvements to remove slow zones and improve rail service on the Brown Line as part of the Ravenswood Connector Rehabilitation Project.

Level Of Service Interruption: Minor Delays

Information: Trains in both directions will operate on the same track between Jackson and Racine. Board/exit all trains on the O’Hare-bound side of the platform at LaSalle, Clinton, and UIC-Halsted.

Note: On Saturday, some trips will begin/end at LaSalle. Listen carefully to train announcements.

This is due to IDOT construction on the Halsted Street Bridge as part of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Circle Interchange Project.

Information: Green Line service has been temporarily suspended between 35th-Bronzeville-IIT and Garfield due to police activity. Trains are operating in two sections:

  • between Harlem and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT
  • between Garfield and Cottage Grove - Ashland/63rd.

 

Passengers should consider using the #3 King Drive, #29 State, #35 31st-35th, #43 43rd, #47 47th, #55th Garfield, and Red Line trains as an alternative to Green Line service.

Alternate Service: Shuttle buses are available to provide connecting service through the affected area(s).

Information: Green Line service has been temporarily suspended between 35th-Bronzeville-IIT and Garfield due to police activity. Trains are operating in two sections:

  • between Harlem and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT
  • between Garfield and Cottage Grove - Ashland/63rd.

Another derailment on the Green Line early this morning around 63rd and Cottage Grove, near about where the last one occurred. I know there's switching going on with trains going to middle tracks that are transferring new equipment from the temporary 63rd drop-off location, but with passenger safety in mind.... this switching to middle track practice may have to quit unless CTA wants something perhaps more dangerous to occur, like cars sliding off the embankment when they derail, putting lives at a greater risk. Either the personnel don't put the switch fully back to original position after switching over a new equipment transfer, or the switch is so rarely used, it's hanging partially still switched, and the moving of the trains over it slides it back to the switch point where it catches a car and back to original point, causing the derailment.

Story 

Sunday’s Green line derailment occurred at Ashland/63rd St., not at 63rd Cottage Grove, and neither location was near where a four-car Green line derailment happened weeks ago. And even if a second derailment happened in the same location, every mishap happens because of individual circumstances. CTA has not mentioned what it thinks caused Sunday’s incident and it remains to be seen if a switch or curve or tangent track was involved. Or if equipment or personnel were faulted.

Switching movements, middle tracks, and new transfer of new equipment were mentioned in the above post but no reason was given for the inclusion since neither switching or middle tracks have ever been involved in an incident with new 5000 series equipment.   

A word about middle tracks. Middle tracks are located throughout the “L” system. They serve multiple purposes. Being in the middle they serve both main tracks in either direction.  They can hold extra trains or the can be a place to park an out-of-order train. They are often used to change the direction of trains and equipment. The biggest used middles  are 14th, 63rd, and Morgan. 

Finally, the 63rd lower yard has helped twenty new 5000 series to be transferred to active shops where they are prepared for revenue service.   Less than twenty new cars remain to be put on the system. The 63rd lower yard is also the main dispatch for work trains that daily are carrying equipment and materials throughout the CTA rail system using the 2400 series as "work motors."

Newstory from Sunday…Service has been restored to CTA Green Line trains after some trains stopped running early Sunday morning because of a minor derailment.

The wheel of a southbound train came off the rails “slightly” just north of the 63rd/Ashland platform around 5:45 a.m. Sunday, said CTA spokesman Steve Mayberry. There were no passengers on the train at the time and no injuries, he said.
Train service was stopped between the Garfield Boulevard and 63rd/Ashland stops. A shuttle ran between the stops until about 9:20 a.m., when service was restored, Mayberry said.

Indeed. Back when they were doing the red line construction, they had "Loop" Green Lines but I never managed to get a picture. Quite weird seeing them come around the corner like a Brown Line.

Forest Park bound Blue Line trains are standing at Harlem due to a sick customer. Somehow this is also causing all trains between Harlem and at least Damen to be delayed. Not sure how a delay affects trains in front of it, but it is.

I'm assuming Harlem-O'Hare. Either way, that's very weird.

If it was Harlem-Forest Park that would be one big delay.
