5000-series - Updates

That might be an incorrect assumption. I'm not aware that any cars have been delivered to CTA, rejected and then sent back to Bombardier for repair.

If I gave the impression that last week marked the first delivery of non-prototype cars, I apologize. That was not what I was trying to convey. Although I don't have exact delivery dates for all the cars, I call tell you this much:

5001-02: delivered prior to 7/28/11

5013-14, 5019-22: delivered prior to 8/16/11

5039-40: delivered prior to 9/17/11

5049-50, 5015-16: delivered 9/19/11 and 9/21/11

Why do you think that 5050 would belong to the Green Line? If there is an expected assignment list, then I missed it. Even if all the cars came in in numerical order (which they haven't) the Pink Line would be expected to get cars up to 5054 (since the 10 prototypes are going back for retrofitting, and assuming the current assignment of 44 cars). Edit: I understand that rail maintenance's plan is for cars to go to Pink Line and then Green, I'm unaware that any numerical assignments have been made.

No deliveries are made to lines. They are all delivered to Skokie Shops first, for inspection and acceptance.

The 256 3200-series cars were delivered over a two-year time frame. Does anyone know if those were delivered in numerical order? I don't.

I guess you misunderstood me on your first statement, it seems obvious to me the first prototypes were delivered needed something changed and were sent back (in fact this has been stated) The second prototypes which were supposed to include #5013- #5022 underwent a partial delivery and all action stops. (we never see #5017-18 and we still haven't) There still seems to be something they (CTA) are not happy with. It would seem that #5023 - #5050 were built using the second prototype specs. CTA gets something they are happy with (we hope) with the repair of #5039-40 and #5049-50, or it's possible they were just built in the correct fashion. (no mods needed) So even though, #5023 - #5050 never sets foot in Chicago, if there not happy with the prototype 2's why send them at all? (Reason for the delay) Now, if they are happy cars #5051 and up resume delivery and all others are modded to reflect the newest batch.

Now point 2: #5050, I know, has not been officially assigned to green, but because of all of the circuses above should have been. Of course they can assign cars out of sequence, but it makes for a confusing mess. Eventually the numbers would sort out in sequence, unless there were something special about a certain batch of cars. Probably I would just do a pink/green line dual training with the higher cars going to green. #5003- #5012 being a repair get sent to pink for training. (unless those cars still don't measure up, I hope they do) so, I'm just saying what line the car would most likely stay on in a long term assignment. Now commenting on what you've stated, ("since the 10 prototypes are going back for retrofitting") this may prove my above statements, showing a repair hasn't been done to prototype 1's, because they are not happy with prototype 2's. Regardless it all sounds like a big mess to me.
BTW, I'm trying to put together a delivery list of #5000's on here myself as they come in. I will be using all sources available to me to get as accurate a list as I can attain. In fact I need to update it now with last weeks info.

I'll yield the 5000-Series list to you, BusHunter. You are the list expert here!!! :)

Well until they fix some of the Red Line stops north of Addison, that is out for 5000's. There are some stops that are higher than the door level of the train(I almost found out the hard way at Howard, when I almost fell into the railcar, the drop from platform to car had to be about 5-6"). While the cars can kneel, they can't raise from their neutral position, so this route will have to wait until the stations are evened out. I can't speak for the Blue Line, but it'll be hard to implement new equipment on a 24/7 route, IMO. I'm still going to speculate Brown Line as the first line to get these cars for the following reasons...

-Transfer of 3200 for 5000-Series cars can occur during down times of Brown Line service

-Blue Line requires more cars than Brown, and 5000's can't be trained with anything but 5000's(same applies to Red Line)

-When the Blue Line is supplemented with enough 3200-Series cars to replace the 2200's, the Purple Line will get the other 3200's to replace half or all the 2400-Series cars on their roster. And following that, new shipments of 5000's will replace the remaining 2400's on the Purple Line(if any remain), then the Green Line 2400's before starting to retire the first groups of 2600's assigned to the Red Line, which are the oldest, built in 1981(2601-2670) & 1982(2671-2740)

I don't understand how the unevenness of platform height rules out the 5000's ?

Let me explain then, Amtrak41. Some of the platforms on the Red Line are higher than the railcar themselves. The 5000's have the ability to kneel down to meet platforms that are lower than the railcar, but can't raise up to meet the uneven platforms on the Red Line that are North of Addison going towards Howard. As I said, I almost fell into the railcar at Howard after exiting the Purple Line because the platform is 5-6" above the floor of the railcar(that might be over-exaggerating, maybe 3-4", but still higher than the railcar itself). The Brown Line platforms are all lower or level with the railcars. The rest of the lines I'm not sure about, but I'll say they are lower or level with the railcars. Check out some of the stations north of Addison on the Red Line sometime. You'll see what I mean...

We are thinking similarly up to a point, with that point being that the Orange line would be substituted for the Brown where you place the 5000s on the Brown, and GreeFar more flexibility between the Pink, Orange

and Green ( and maybe even Blue) lines. Like you, I am holding out the Red for dead last. The only 5000s I see on the North Side in the near future is whatever Yellow gets and Skokie Shop drags.

Still, I rather like your thinking. :D

Gotta put the 2200s to bed before winter!
