Also the first time they said any federal funds were involved, but 10% is sure a departure from the past. Looks like the next time a fare increase is proposed, the reason will be that the sales tax (I assume RTA sales tax) is pledged to the $1 billion in bonds.

Rodriguez had said that the option was going to be changed. As far as one can tell, there is no chance of an airport express as it was conceived in 2006, in that Huberman mothballed the shell of a tunnel and Daley went off on his maglev fantasy.

According to chicago-l.org, the current assignment sheets for Pink, Green, and Red get you to 500. Then you have your rumors of Pink going to 6 cars, and the Red Line extension needing an additional 84 or so. So, at that point, you are up to 650,* and whatever the doubletalk on fleet expansion, you don't have the 310 left needed to stock the Blue Line.

Of course, by 2013, the successor to the successor of current management may change its mind.

NBC news is reporting that delivery after the Red will be Orange, Purple and Yellow lines. So the blue line gets the shaft. Actually if you figure that scenario it's possible 706 cars will take up those lines, but when expansion comes someone (probably purple) would have to give up there cars. The only wildcard in that scenario would be what to do with the 94 #3200's from the Orange line. The way I figure it I'm coming up with 220 - 240 #2600's left probably going to blue through multiple swaps. With the blue having capacity for over 300 they may get those #3200's from Orange. All in all the southside gets all new equipment (excluding the congress branch) the northside gets old equipment on 2 lines and the line with 70 mph capability gets the oldest equipment. Good news if your a southsider.

And the report mentioned that the Brown Line wasn't mentioned in the press announcement, so that line will remain equipped with 3200s for the foreseeable future.

The assignments are to avoid any line (except maybe the Purple Line) being equipped with operationally-incompatible rail cars after the delivery of all 706 cars is complete. This means that the Brown Line and especially the Blue Line get the shaft as far as the new cars are concerned. And since the Brown Line will remain equipped entirely with 3200s for the foreseeable future, the Blue Line will be the only line to be equipped with a compatible mixed-series (2600 and 3200) fleet.

And the Yellow Line will actually get the new 5000s before the Purple Line does. So unit 5705-5706 will be a Purple Line unit when this is all said and done. The Yellow Line's 5000s will be numbered somewhere in the 5600s (assuming that the deliveries of the 5407-5706 group are in numerical order).

Is there any in service completely

According to the NBC Chicago report, only six of the cars are supposed to be completely in service (and assigned to the Pink Line) at this time. The next group of six cars will be put in service on the Pink Line before Thanksgiving.

I wonder who told NBC, but, again, you can put your bets that by 2016 it probably won't be that way. Just remember how the 1050 1000 buses were allocated.

I didn't watch NBC, but note how otherwise its quotes are congruent with the press release (at least the second quote in the PR). On other stations, while Claypool might have been there, he didn't get any air, but I'm sure someone will post a video where he appeared, maybe on WOCH or Noticias Univision.

And, as for the other stations, I'm sure Emanuel was solely responsible for this procurement, and, as one said, it is going to be 702 cars.

I also noted how Purple Line made no sense. So, I guess that's what it'll be, unless it won't.

Thanks for your thorough research through the CTA PR archives. I bet you can find the one where Kruesi said these cars are going on the Blue Line

However, by the time you get to the CTA to issue bonds one, "other sources" are $124 million, and if we take the budget at face value (explain what sources are paying for all the leases and bonds there), that means that not much of any other sources are going into the next 300.

For that matter, I thought that the CTA didn't have sales tax authority, only the RTA did, so that must be what they are pledging.

But I guess I shouldn't say never.

Is there any in service completely

Yesterday there was no #5000's in service on the Pink line, (in the daytime at least) the cars at 54th were in the same position as they were last friday. The only difference was that another set of #5000's were spotted behind the shop. 20 cars in all. I passed 8 cars returning from the orange line press conference around 2PM heading back to 54th. So they have at least 28 cars now. The place to be yesterday would've been Orange line. As the press report indicates the train made an inaugural run from Midway. Today the #5000's most likely will be in service on the Pink Line, the question remains whether it will be 6 cars only in service or many more. BTW, there was a funny sighting yesterday on the Pink. #2250-49 was there with an in training sign on it. Then there was the work cars #2424-23, and #2419-20 and another set of #2400's, which were returning from the incline from the blue. So there was an assortment of equipment there.

Those 5000s were on the Pink Line last night around 7pm. I caught them at Cicero/Cermak stop. I didn't catch the numbers, but they were definitely heading to the Loop.

The CTA's Flickr pool shows car #5055... So the CTA has taken theoretical delivery of a bunch of 5000s by now.

That was also the one shown on Channel 7 {reflected in this video, although I was watching at 6 p.m. rather than 11:30 a.m.}. Your conclusion is correct, although that doesn't mean that they have 56 (one has to assume that the pair was delivered, though, but maybe not).

The pair was delivered, Busjack. If it wasn't, the CTA wouldn't put it out with all the other married pair units sitting at 54th St. Yard. The only time a mixed pair is married is when their mates are retired.

Update: I paused the video and took a really good look at the married pair. That is 5056, Busjack. I can see the "6" a little bit.

I guess I wasn't clear. I meant to say "that doesn't mean that they have 56 cars," not that they didn't have 5056 (although I didn't exclude the possibility). But apparently your eyes are better than mine.

I'd really like to know exactly how many cars is the Red Ling going to get, then Orange, & then Purple. Are they going to be completely filled with 5000-series rail cars or just partially in 6- or 8-car consists?

That would leave only 18 for expansion, but Red expansion is supposed to take 84, not to mention if Pink gets another 11 based on the rumor of going to 6 car trains.

Hence, as someone surmised, some bean counter basically came up with what lines would be completely replaced by 706, if you assume what NBC said. Also, the only justification for the alst two would be if for some reason Howard Yard must have uniform equipment.While they could run trains of both types on one line so long as any given consist is one kind of cars, the numbers don't indicate that that's their intent, if they have any.

Saw the six car train this morning at Pulaski/Pink Line station, looked very nice!.

Yesterday there were two sets of four car trains running the Pink in the PM rush out of 8 trains. One was #5013-14 and #5021-22 and the other train was #5019-20 and #5039-40. The ones I saw two days ago in the midway press train were #5019-20, #5039-40, #5055-56, and #5001-02. With #5055 being the sixth car the train must have been split over there. Maybe one four car set was for reporters one was to run in service. I wasn't there, but the orange was running 4 cars midday. This being said wouldn't the 8 press cars be ready for service along with the four different ones I saw yesterday. There was a four car set in the 54th yard away from the shops that may have been there spare train. So I would say 12 may be available now.

I can't wait for the day in 2014 that the only line not running 5000s on the elevated portion of the Loop is to be the Brown Line (if the current plans on assignments are executed in their entirety). All other lines (Green, Pink, Orange and Purple Express) that run above ground downtown would then be mostly or completely re-equipped with the new cars.

And, as usual, the Blue Line gets the shaft (as far as car assignments go): It will be stuck with some of the oldest cars to remain in revenue service after the completion of the 5000-series delivery. This is in contrast to the Red Line, which (like the Green, Pink, Purple and Orange Lines) would be mostly or completely re-equipped with the 5000s.

I was surprised that not only was the Blue not going to be the first line to receive 5000s, but apparently none at all. But if Blue got the Orange's 3200s, it could help, especially with the luggage toters that board at O'Hare. You would have utter chaos in the aisles of the 5000s, and I guess by Midway being the smaller airport, not as much of a problem with luggage in the aisles on the train.

Not true. The first #5000s went into revenue service Tuesday, November 8 out of 54th around 2:50 pm. Several rail fans, customers and news media were on hand for the first trip. The front car had more cameras than customers. ;)
