More Bus Moves

You have K with more than 260 buses total (190 NFs, 701, 800-809 and artics 4000-4052 and 4198-4207). They had issues with parking buses overnight and it's already been established that that many buses is more than that garage can handle.

The only way currently to solve this issue would be to reassign some of its routes to other garages. For example, the #35 and #39 could be returned to 77th while #21 and #60 could be operated from Forest Glen or 74th.

That makes "a lot of sense;" relieving from cross town a good 15 miles away.:|

I'm surprised you haven't commented on Claypool not making good on the represented Fisk garage,

It looks like you're assuming that the old Novas will all be retired, and that ain't happening. I can see maybe 50-70 old Novas (6700s, 6800s) still in service through at least Spring 2017;

At least 27, since the justification for electrics was that they replace the emissions of the Novas.

Then the question is of the option for 25--exercise it or use the money toward the electrics--although the 5 year capital plan is 50 buses.

I was just throwing ideas for routes at the fringe(s) of Kedzie's area.

The other scenario would involve Kedzie giving up the #134, #151 short trips and the #156 to North Park or Chicago, which means that Kedzie would have needed a lot fewer artics assigned to it. Perhaps Kedzie might become a 40-foot-only garage like 74th, 77th and Forest Glen currently are. Plus, Kedzie has absolutely no room whatsoever to expand without requiring expensive land acquisition and the demolition of numerous residential structures.

By the way, #1223 made its way to 77th: It's on the #8 this morning.

  • Kedzie just dumped some routes on C.
  • Kedzie doesn't have to expand; see my reference to the fictional Fisk Garage above. If any expansion is needed, that's the place.
  • 77th has room for about 400 buses, but apparently doesn't want routes with more than 285. Only justification for having shifted routes from 77 to 103 seems to be that 103 was underutilized.

I don't see this scenario happening for (at least) 4 reasons:

1) It looks like you're assuming that the old Novas will all be retired, and that ain't happening. I can see maybe 50-70 old Novas (6700s, 6800s) still in service through at least Spring 2017; the CTA has been known to keep buses in service for 16 years in the past.

2) While the CTA has done some boneheaded things before, they're not going to break up the group of NFs at 103rd after going to all the trouble of bringing them there in the first place.

3) You're leaving NP with only 200 or so buses (70 NFs, 130 artics) and that'll be inadequate; keep in mind NP is really the only garage on the North Side, FG is on the Northwest Side.

4) You have K with more than 260 buses total (190 NFs, 701, 800-809 and artics 4000-4052 and 4198-4207). They had issues with parking buses overnight and it's already been established that that many buses is more than that garage can handle.

I understand where you're coming from. Kedzie currently have 264 buses (190 1000s).  As busjack stated that Kedzie really don't need to expand at all. So I may change the prediction if certain routes are getting shifted to another garage. Oh man I didn't catch myself leaving 80 1000s short on behalf of North Park. However if I'm not mistaking, Forest Glen supposed to be half Nova (8200-8325) and half NF (125 of them) which is why I put 103rd in the mix but the old Novas are going to cause problems because of maintenance costs. It doesn't make any sense for Chicago to have 1800s if the majority of it's fleet is dominated with Allison 1900s.

In fact, it looks like 103rd got 1212-1218 from 77th because 1217 and 1218 are running on #71 today.

Hmmm, interesting because Forest Glen is about to get more 1000s. #1035 has made its way over there. That means, Forest Glen may also have 1036-1039 or 1040.

hmmm interesting. I wonder then are the chicago oddballs gone? That's 5 buses. Guess I'll have to check. I need to update my rosters anyway.

As far as Chicago they may not get #1800's, I still don't get this #1799 - lower #1800's swap to Chicago because those should end up at NP.

BTW, #1237 has gone to 77th from Chicago but it seems to be the only #1200 they sent over.

#1367 and #1368 has went to 77th from 74th (probably #1366 too)

I'm really getting started to think that 77th 1200s are going to start at either 1225, 1230, 1235, or 1240. Keep in mind that it's possible that the remaining 1200s from Chicago, Kedzie, and North Park can be relinquished for 77th. #1366 is probably at 77th. If North Park were to get the lower 1800s (makes sense) then Kedzie should get the remaining 1700s from North Park and 74th forfeits their remaining 1800s to North Park in exchange for either some higher 1700s but it'll be tricky if it were for the higher 1800s.

I'm just surprised they squeezed out 6 more #1000's for FG. The oddballs are still there too. They better hurry up and retire some buses before someone changes their mind. xD It might have something to do with these #8200's which are so slow to arrive. They can't retire anything without buses to replace them. BTW, #8200 is at south shops right (for sure) cause I thought someone said it was #8198 after someone said it was #8200. Hopefully they have gotton something else by now or FG may actually have to put the two trainers in regular service temporarily.

1214 apparently made the trip from K to 103rd overnight because after being on the #12 yesterday, it's on the #34 right now.

#1250 is also on the #4 or it was this evening. #1251 I still don't know about or #1235. #1271 was on the #10 so it's still at Kedzie for the moment.

From this morning's webwatch.

1245, 1248 C to 77th; 1251 K to 77th; 1254 K to 77th (had been reported as moving to 74th); 1259 P to 77th. Also 1739 is still at 74th and has not moved to K.

I fixed the #1739 situation. Also, I fixed the #1254-#1256 situation.

By the way, the five higher-numbered New Flyers (#1329, #1419, #1421, #1689 and #1799) that had been at Forest Glen for the past two weeks are now back at Chicago Garage with the arrival of #1034-#1039 at Forest Glen from 103rd.

Thus, the full list of weekend moves:

Buses In:

Chicago: 1329, 1419, 1421, 1689, 1799

Forest Glen: 1034-1040

Kedzie: 1577-1583, 1721, 1726-1729, 1731-1738

74th: 1439-1467, 1472

77th: 1223, 1235, 1237, 1245, 1248, 1250, 1251, 1254-1256, 1259, 1342, 1343, 1346, 1350-1353, 1366-1368

103rd: 1212-1218

Buses Out:

Chicago: 1237, 1245, 1248

Forest Glen: 1329, 1419, 1421, 1689, 1799

Kedzie: 1214, 1217, 1223, 1235, 1250, 1251, 1254-1256, 1439-1451

North Park: 1259

74th: 1342, 1343, 1346, 1350-1353, 1366-1368, 1577-1583, 1721, 1726-1729, 1731-1738

77th: 1212, 1213, 1215, 1216, 1218, 1452-1467, 1472

103rd: 1034-1040

In addition, North Park loaned 1383 and 1397 to Forest Glen for Monday's afternoon rush.

It can be a possibility that 74th can get 1473-1494 and 74th forfeit 1550-1559 and/or 77th forfeiting 1541-1548 and 1560-1576. 74th should keep 1741-1760. Here's what I'm predicting based off the swaps and soon to come 8200s.

Forest Glen: 1000-1124

103rd: 1125-1299

77th: 1300-1429

74th: 1430-1549

Kedzie: 1550-1739

74th: 1740-1779

North Park: 1780-1849

77th: 1850-1899

Chicago: 1900-2029

I did the best I can to make this prediction even out the current roster except for Forest Glen.

I think for the more immediate future that beyond the adding of 1034-39 as long term reassignments to replace the two week loan of the five Chicago oddball NFs, CTA's main focus with FG is going to be retiring 6400s down to about the number that need to stick around to justify the planned electric bus procurement of 27 first and foremost, and then worry about what addition NFs are needed to cover what 6400s that new Novas won't replace before the planned electric buses are acquired down the road.

Yeah me too. xD They still haven't moved #8199 or #8197. I noticed in the 3rd yard #6684 and I think #6578. #6571, #6863, #6831, #6833 were gone. Looked like #6716's plates were removed.

What!!!??? The 5 oddball's were at Forest Glen I think yesterday and I think this morning. "They stole it from us, the precious." 9_9

It still make no sense then to loan buses from NP. "we will serve the master of the precious" they just have to trust us. o.O:D I guess they changed their minds.

Well the question then becomes has anyone actually sighted 1249 anywhere in the last few days to verify whether it has been reassigned or not?

If FG is going to get a few more NFs in the very near future, then actually it does make sense for NP to loan a couple till then unless they're fill-ins for soon to be made sightings of new Novas on FG routes.xD:) There are two new Novas on garage grounds after all for reported operator familiarization. It only makes sense to soon move from their just sitting at the garage to actually allowing operators to test them out on the road and get a feel for them in revenue operation.9_9

The 5 oddballs were still out in service from F yesterday morning. By yesterday afternoon 1329, 1421 and 1689 were in service from C, the other two were not out (same this morning) according to Maths22 archive.

1249 was on the 20 this morning according to maths22 archive.
