I would like to thank 103rd for taking the slowest nova from 77th being #7926. Please keep that bus for as long as you desire. ???? #1270 has popped up at 103rd as well.

This is a list of when 4000-series buses in the #4172-4193 (except for #4180 and #4182) last ran according to the Maths 22 website:

#4172: 2/1/2023 on J14

#4173: 2/24/2023 on J14

#4174-4176: no data

#4177: 2/11/23 on 6

#4178: 2/15/2023 on J14

#4179: 2/2/2023 on 26

#4181: 1/26/2023 on J14

#4183: 12/13/2022 on J14

#4184-4185: no data

#4186: 2/19/2023 on 6

#4187: 1/23/2023 on 26

#4188: 12/19/2022 on J14

#4189: 1/3/2023 on J14

#4190: 12/8/2022 on 26

#4191: 2/15/2023 on 28

#4192: 12/7/2022 on J14

#4193: 1/17/2023 on J14

I am wondering if there are issues with these buses. If so, are these buses retired? If these buses are retired, then will 103rd get a sufficient number of option 1 8350-series buses (the next group of 8350-series buses (8450-8549)) to replace these buses?

I have added last use dates for buses with no data currently in the bustracker archive.

I wouldn't jump the gun to quickly on retirement just yet. A lot artics are SS currently and with the next wave of #8350s coming in, a backlog of buses needing maintenance has accumulated. I remember when the first 99 out 100 for the first option was completed the SS fence wall along 79th was practically empty but now with these new deliveries the fence has filled back up into a backlog which has now spilled into the boneyard. I've seen quite a few #4000s get pushed back there near the #6000s in the past few weeks. It's kind of hard to manage space for  all these buses needing maintenance mixed in with the recent batch of #6400s that just got placed back there.

Thank you. I am suspicious that these buses have been retired before the rest of the 4000-series because these buses might have issues. For the 5 buses that you added data for, was 103rd the last garage that ran those buses (4174-4176 and 4184-4185)?

They were originally there but haven't been active much at all.

Interesting. There is a maintenance backlog due to deliveries of new buses. Also, how serious are the issues with the buses that need maintenance or repairs?

I'll give some examples, cosmetic repair, suspension, engine, shocks, transmission, articulated joints, oil change. There can be a multitude of things that need to be repaired or tended to on a bus at one time, sometimes the inventory may be low as far as parts are concerned which will sideline a bus until they become available. Some maintenance repairs may take days while others takes weeks if not months depending on the state of the bus and what's considered top priority. It takes time to not only get the parts but also breakdown and then reassemble certain components of a bus.

Yea you are most def right cause when 4175 needed work I came over there to watch & learn to start my process of moving over to the bus shops and the vets was talking about it how they had other buses to do first before 4175

Yessir, there's so much that goes into being a bus mechanic.

Thanks for the explanation. I was going to speculate about what was happening, especially with the stimulus buses (4150-4207), but having blown it on the NABIs, decided not to.

No problem, the #4000s are in a odd position right now especially since the #4300s are going to be rehabbed. It makes me wonder how many CTA really would keep around for the foreseeable future. Outside of the major summer events this year with LALA,NASCAR and Taste of Chicago the current amount of artics running wouldn't be able to handle the increased capacity for those events. I hope that the at least 80 out 107 of the artics are running by then because the lower #1000s are running on pins and needle at this point doing the heavy duty work of what use to be ran solely by artics. NP runs the most aartics out of any artic based garage and the non hybrid #4300s have barely shown signs of wear and tear compared to the #4000s and hybrid #4300s.
