CTA 'L' Rosters

I think some #2600 cars might have to leave the roster for awhile also to replace these, but #2893-98 are curiously absent, but how could a santa car double as a work car? what do you do in Dec?

2893-98 are work motors (hence compatible with flatcars). As I mentioned elsewhere, this year would be ideal for some 2400 work motor pairs to run the holiday train as a fitting sendoff for the 2400s. Of course, if nothing else is available they could skip the Santa flatcar and run a regular train with lighting and decorations. A few 3200s are work motor equipped as well.

You are not taking into account the wiring, special decorations, special displays worked and the adaptations specially made to fit the 2893/ 2898 car set. These are not done in a few minutes.

How many and what 2600's are now in the Midway Yard and in Orange Line service?

Which ones are from the Red Line and which ones from the Purple?

The ones assigned to the Orange Line are 2609-2610, 2635-2636, 2661-2662 and 2799-2800(roster). All eight of these cars are from the Blue Line.

I guess that means they will run in one set, just like the 2400s are doing on the Orange Line.

It also means that CTA doesn't discriminate in putting bad cars on lines that serve Chicago's airports.

How many more 5000s have to arrive before we see all of the 2400s and SOME 2600s go bye bye?

That gets back to that essentially one doesn't know if the fleet increase from 1190 to about 1370 is going to stick.

Since the reports are that about 480 cars have been received, that should have been more than enough to take out 140 2200s, 200 2400s, and 140 2600s. Maybe only 80 2600s if one assumes 60 cars for Brownage.*

Yet, we are only now talking about near the end of the 2400s.

One can also throw in:

  • The 7000s spec said that 400 were to replace 2600s, but that spec is now meaningless.
  • The 2600s seem to be self destructing at a certain rate.
  • Whether (as BusHunter implies) the Orange Line will perpetually be mixed service by incompatible trains (some 5000s, but not enough to stock the yard).

*An assumption made when the original 5000s schedule of options was announced was that the base order of 206 was to replace 140 2200s and add 66 cars for the promised increase of 33% needed to get the Brown Line up from 6 to 8 car trains (roughly from 146 cars to 200 cars for Brown Line service). Maybe that happened or maybe it did not.

I have seen photos/videos of 2893-2898 on the Skokie with both interior and exterior detail and they look more or less like other cars. Where are the wiring and other special provisions these cars are equipped with located?

You are asking for a lot of information. Most people concerned with the operation of the train are not specifically interested in the makeup of the train. I imagine there are boxes and boxes labeled for each six car. Over the years, the 2600s rostered on the Yellow line were used. Now, the cars are evidently stored. If you want information, you would have to contact the Skokie shops and be ready to explain why the knowlege is needed.

Well folks, there's a set of 2600s operating the Orange Line right now heading towards Midway. I couldn't get the run number but I did get a glance of #2637-38 being part of the set.

Awesome! I hope they start mixing them up with the 3200 they just look together lol. When the 2400 1st start coming to the orange line they mixed them with the 32's but that's just wishful thinking I guess cause you just don't see that anymore like you used to.

Yeah, I don't see a problem having them mixed up. Hell, I'm tired just seeing #3458 getting all the 3200s love!

Hmm more blue line cars. i thought I might have seen #2907-08 on the blue line. Looks like the Blue line is getting Red line cars and Orange line is getting Blue line cars.

I think that's a fair move to give the Blue Line the youngest 2600s and Orange Line the oldest 2600s.

Hey Garmon, you sure you saw #2637-38. I just talked with my contact and they said this is what the orange line has for #2600's.

#2609-10, #2617-20, #2661-62, #2635-36, #2677-78, #2685-86, #2799-#2800

Damn now I have to figure out what 16 cars went from red to blue.

Looks like they are setting up to have the #2900's and higher on the blue line. Of course there may be lower cars that are still around also just not in any great number. #2600's seem to be going to midway but I don't know if they'll stick around. They should be the first ones retired of the #2600's.

Doesn't seem like about 280 (discounting wrecks) would be enough, especially since it previously was 3000s up plus about 130 2200s. The year old car assignment list says 344.

Ah but that's where the #3200's might come into play. They may take the place of all the cars needed over 300 on the blue line. Roughly 86 cars, not far from the Orange line's #3200 series count now. So what then would that leave for the Orange line brownages? The best of the #2601- #2899's

Brownages are run by Orange Line Rail Operators, so any equipment on the Orange Line could become a Brownage train. Even 5000's, if that is the CTA's plan to stock them there after the Red Line.

In what year or century? Certainly not now.

I think what's going to happen is the last #5000's will go to the Orange line and when the Red line 130th extension opens those cars will go to the Red line and the Orange would then get #7000's. Otherwise they are going to have an incompatible fleet on the Orange line for at least 25-40 years.
